Forget waiting for apple, I jail broke my ip4, got mywi, connected to my iPad and promptly canceled my 3G account with AT&T. Save an extra $30 a month and I get 3G iPad access whenever I want.

The download speed is fine but the upload on the iPad is severely lacking in comparison to the iPhone 4. I4 is definitely the device of choice when talking about tethering a connection to another device.

I can't wait till Verizon drops on Neutron bomb on this bunker of bulls***. Man, the iphone carrier offerings need competition!

As it stands now, can you tether (officially and/or via a jailbreak) via wifi and/or Bluetooth? That seems a bit archaic that, according to the post, you have to tether via USB.

Really stupid...

This is really stupid. Why in God's name would anyone be walking around with both an iPad and a laptop in their bag? Apple should just introduce a compact notebook with 3G built in say like the next MacBook Air. I was going back and forth about buying an Air when I bought my iPad and frankly the only reason why I went with it over the Air is that I can connect virtually anywhere because of the 3G. If the MacBook Air had 3G built in, the iPad wouldn't have even been on my radar.

It boggles my mind how dumb people are. Are there really people stupid enough to pay twice for data, or worse annoying enough to whine about having to? Either (a) jailbreak your iphone or ipad and share its data plan with the other (through wifi, bluetooth, etc.), or (b) swap the sim card from one device to the other and simply change the APN to gain internet access if you don't like the jailbreak route. Sure (a) is a nicer deal since it doesn't involve having to swap the sim card around while changing settings, but until Apple refuses to allow ATT to cripple native carrier profile adjustments, is it really that hard to do and worth making a fuss about (it's literally a 30 second affair)?

Additionally, Apple develops a worldwide platform, and in most other countries the tethering option is not disabled by ATT's carrier settings. It's therefore normal for the betas to have that built-in since it is automatically built-in to the OS on ALL apple iDevices. If you don't see it, it's simply because when you load your sim card into your iDevice, it loads the carrier bundle, or settings from your providers, which may or may not disable the tethering feature, which to answer another poster, does allow either USB or Bluetooth tethering natively (if your devices weren't locked to ATT's carrier profile you'd realize that the tethering is native in all Apple devices as soon as you remove the sim).

The only legitimate complaint we may have against Apple on this point is why the heck aren't they allowing different tethering options like MyWi in the iTunes stores of countries that do allow the carrier profiles to be changed manually and not to be crippled?

Also for UK customers with O2, since iOS 4.1 the option to tether using HSPA (APN mobile.o2.co.uk Username bypass) was removed. The result is much slower downloads and compressed images - yuk!

I don't know why people just won't jailbreak their devices.

I think it is mostly to do with the association of the name jailbreak (something illegal it sounds like) and the popularity of pirating apps (but do you associate the internet with piracy? it's the same concept, both have GATEWAYS to piracy, but not everyone takes them)

Jailbreaking doesn't ruin your iPhones warranty, kill your battery, make your phone unstable, etc.

Sure there are many tweaks, hacks, apps, etc that can do the above.. but if you're smart and only install the essential / reputable apps, you will be fine. Example is MyWi, if you jailbreak your iPhone, only install MyWi, you will be fine. For a one time fee of $20, you can have a WiFi hotspot device that far surpasses any tethering our Generous AT&T or Apple would ever give us.

Just curious.. Where I live (Sweden), almost all carriers offer the option for an additional SIM-card that uses the same data-plan as your regular SIM. Ie, the other SIM card will have a new number, but when you call / surf with it, it gets billed to your regular bill. So, if you have an unlimited data plan on your regular SIM (as I do), getting one of these extra SIMs and putting in your ipad basically makes you surf for free. The extra card costs about $5 per month though, which is reasonable enough for me to get this for my iPad as well.

Don't you guys have similar options where you live? Lots of complaining that you will have to purchase two data plans in this thread.

AT&T is garbage.

At least AT&T has a tethering plan for the iPhone (which hopefully will soon be compatible with the iPad).

Here in Japan, Softbank doesn't even offer us a tethering plan.

But I agree, it's ridiculous all around.

I don't see the problem here. I am looking forward to this. I don't have a cellphone that can tether right now so I'm using my 3G sim in the iPad and a prepaid card in my phone.

In this house they turn off the router almost every night and it would be real nice if I could just hit "on" on the iPad and get back online instead of having to remove the sim and put it in my 3G modem over and over. If they enable this, hey presto, less wear on the sim slot, no need to fiddle with modems, micro-sim adapters etc.

Lol Stingray. Most of the world doesn't have the kind of customer friendly telephony services available in Sweden. In the UK swapping SIMs around will work but contradicts the terms of the carrier and may land the user with a huge bill for inappropriate use of data. I have 3 iPhones, iPad and Mobile Broadband - for that O2 require me to have 5 separate accounts and SIM cards all billed individually. Inefficient is how we like to do things in the UK - it helps to justify the cost and confuse the consumer :)

I don't know why Apple don't just allow full tethering of whatever device to whatever device. All the carriers have data caps, let them sort out how much you can use. It's just silly to have device 1 not be able to use device 2's internet connection, in whatever combination.

I have an iPhone 4 and iPad (WiFi only) and though I can't say I've really missed having the 3G connection on the iPad, it would be handy for the rare occasions it would be nice to be able to use my iPhone's connection on the iPad.

Whenever I need to bring my iPad outside and an Internet connection is needed, I always have my iPhone with me. It is very stupid to add another 3G monthly fee to my expenses. iPad WiFi + iTether is the best option for me. I don't even have to jailbreak my iPhone and it does not drain my battery so much as MyWi.

When I saw the headline I thought that Apple had done the impossible thing to enable tethering to an iPhone :(

So did I, i was thinking this is not Apple until i read it all through and smiled and thought now this is Apple ;)

What are you looking forward to? If your on ATT no tethering is coming your way. The carrier settings will make sure to disable the tethering included in iOS 4.

The 9to5mac guy was from Sweden on 3. This guy is on T-Mobile UK. Any way to know who has it and who doesn't?

Sure, it depends on your carrier. Any carrier that allows tethering will allow the setting to work.

It's not that simple for Apple. They are trying to protect their consumers, so they allow the carriers that disallow tethering, as per the terms of their contracts, to disable the tethering feature built into your iOS 4+ device so that you don't end up in violation of your contract. If Apple made it impossible for the carrier profile settings to disable the tethering, people would obviously be capable of tethering despite what their contracts say, which would mean that the Carriers could try and enforce the contract in court. What do you think the consumers will say then? Probably some outrage along the lines of: "Why did Apple allow, in the system by default, something they fully knew would entice the users to break their contracts?" It would be a PR disaster. It's much better to just ensure everything is legal.

That's precisely why some developer who coded a tethering app should file a claim with the FCC that ATT's contract is unfair and anti-competitive. That should put the matter to rest. It's fine if ATT wants to charge for adding a service, but to preclude others from offering that service at competitive rates shouldn't be tolerated, and likely wouldn't (it would be like what happened concerning VOIP over 3G and Google Voice when the FCC was called to attention concerning what was going on in the App store and ATT's influence; both Apple and ATT had to deny any wrongdoing, and low and behold, everything suddenly became allowed shortly thereafter).

Paying for a data connection per device is just plain ridiculous. Imagine if you had to do that at home? MyWi is your friend. :p
Same here. Used mywi on holidays in Spain for 3 euros per day. Fantastic, ran 3 iphones, ipad and laptop off it
