What do you call it when you jailbreak your device to tether in an unapproved manner on AT&T's network?

"Most people" associate jailbreaking with wrong doing not necessarily piracy. There are very few legitimate reasons more technical people jailbreak. Technical people are drawn to jailbreak to tether in an unapproved manner on the 3G network, circumvent download sizes on the 3G network, hack DRM on apps, and a few other things that escape me at the moment that "most people" wouldn't normally do. Plus "most people" don't want to risk jailbreaking for fear of device instability that may create an exploit or damage the device they just shelled out cash and a 2 year contract on.

I don't know about that. I think MyWi is the best reason to jailbreak, but there are lots of good apps out there that are not part of iTunes. Such as Categories which allows you to do folders much better then iOS4 ie you can have as many apps as you want in a folder. You can use Winterboard so that you can display a different icon scheme, background, and add 5 apps to the dock. You can add a really cool shortcut menu to control wifi, 3G, BT, screen brightness, ringer, rotation lock, etc. by swipping the top edge of your screen. You can have the phone tell you if you have any emails or texts without signing on to the phone. My favorite is the app that lets you change AT&T to whatever word you want on the top of the screen. Lots of stuff the iPhone should do, but doesn't.

iPad = Big big battery for all day hotspot

To me the main benefit of using an iPad as a hotspot is that it has a huge battery and when you turn off the screen it will pretty much run all day on a single charge as a hotspot. I have done this many times with my iPad 3G, and it's awesome. Every other device that I have used as a hotspot basically needs to be plugged into an outlet to get any type of useful battery life.

Tethering

Actually, on a recent trip to Germany, "Tethering" also showed up on my iPhone with an ATT account once I arrived over there. However, there was nothing available in the way of activation.

I don't know why people just won't jailbreak their devices.
...
but if you're smart and only install the essential / reputable apps, you will be fine. Example is MyWi, if you jailbreak your iPhone, only install MyWi, you will be fine. For a one time fee of $20, you can have a WiFi hotspot device that far surpasses any tethering our Generous AT&T or Apple would ever give us.

sign me up. questions:

1) can i still use the Apple Store?
2) does it mess up itunes syncing or backups?
3) what happens when the next release comes out?

...those are the sorts of unknowns that have not lead me to jailbreak yet, and i havent had time to google around for answers.

thanks!

If I pay to have access to AT&Ts network I want access dammit it doesn't matter what device I use because I can only use ONE device at a time. I'm human not a damn octopus!

whats crazy is -- AT&T's model is like your ISP charging you for each computer you have on your home internet subscription! we'd be shocked! outraged!

I do this!
It's great - but I had to jailbreak the iPad.
C.

ok so ive read how one can jailbreak the iphone, run MyWi, and use the data on the ipad. cool.

but whats the flipside scenario -- if i didnt want to jailbreak the phone but would jailbreak the (wifi-only) ipad, whats the gist? what technique does it employ and what does it cost? im a US customer.

tanks

My Sprint Android phone will do this tethering on a month to month basis with an iPad or my Intel MacBook Pro or even my iPod Touch. Plus my phone screen is big enough to actually see.

you should get yourself to an optometrist and have those peepers checked out if you cant see on an iphone.

With 3 ITA tethering is free :) Always been

And these things sometimes break other things.... The you start to install other crap and you have super unstable and slow phone. 99% users i know with jailbreak done it for pirated software and it is sad. Sure myfy is very nice and i agree.

You actually made my point in your second sentence. The best reason to jailbreak is to tether.

1) Yes.
2) No. (Though if you restore / upgrade to a non jailbroken iOS version, this app won't sync back to the device obviously)
3) You install it from Cydia as any other app. I don't know if future versions will cost more, but I'd guess it's a pay-once-use-forever deal. It usually us.

Tethering a laptop thru an iPad? No, that's not cumbersome at all  why bother?

If the iPad could tether thru an iPhone, I'd buy one tomorrow. No way I'm paying at&t for a second data plan.

Or... thru like any phone with bluetooth. That would be nice for iPod Touch too.

awesome thanks for #3 i meant the next OS release -- how does a jailbroke phone upgrade to 4.2, etc?

I do it with my broadband card, so I would think it would work similarly with a tethered iPhone...

Connect to the internet through the broadband card/iPhone. Go to system prefs, sharing, internet sharing. Create your own network name and password.

Click start sharing. That easy! Connect your iPad to your new network and you're golden.

You know, jailbreaking is great and all, but it's an inelegant solution. For one, at this point practically every reason to jailbreak is gone. Multitasking, Apple did it better. Folders, brilliant. Find My iPhone is free now. Et infinitum. However, AT&T is still cockblocking our advanced networking features. I want my phone to be a router. Or tether via USB/Bluetooth. I want it free because it costs AT&T nothing. And I want to do it without invalidating my warranty and installing a performance sucking and buggy layer on top of iOS. Let's see someone create an ipsw with MyWi built in, or tethering reverted back to the way it was when the BenM hack worked, or someone create a fully signed MyWi ipa, or or or etc. There's tons of ways to do this if someone took the time to find them. Unfortunately, I don't know how to program in Object C. Anyone that does could probably implement any one of these fixes within a few hours. Let that stand as a challenge to anyone on here that can code in C.

Why the hell are you replying to a thread that has been dead for almost 2 months? Jesus H Christ, read the f_cking date of the final post and ask yourself, "Is it stupid to respond to a thread that old?"
