Still haven't figured out how to include an iPad in my workflow. I think the perfect (yet generalized) Apple trio of devices would be:

  • iMac for the desk
  • MacBook Air 11" for mobile typing, creation and consumption
  • iPhone for light consumption and connectivity out in the wild
The ecosystem is complete.

One could say that the iPad could replace the MBA above but by the time you max out an iPad, buy all the accessories (keyboard, case) you're getting a lot less functionality in the iPad for the same if not more money. Plus, you get the full power of OSX in the Air. And to me... the trackpad and gesture support in Apple's laptops is as close as one can get to a touch screen without being inflicted with "gorilla arm".

Also don't know where to fit the iPad mini in all of this. I've used one and find it's just an odd-ball size and doesn't fit in a pocket. Great for reading ebooks but I can do that quite well on any iPhone with ease.

Over the years, I've seen so many iPads from my work colleagues slowly evolve into what I see as tiny ultra books complete with permanent keyboards and hardshell cases. All with the limitations of iOS (which doesn't always fit well in an Enterprise environment I might add).

I agree completely. I've been perfectly happy with my Macs and iPhones over the years but I cannot find a way to incorporate an iPad into my daily lifestyle ? I wish I could so I would have an excuse to buy one :D

If the iPad gets the A7, will the mini get it as well? Or will it just get a bump to the A6/A6X? I guess my question is rhetorical. I'm just hoping it also gets the A7 because I don't understand why Apple would continue to consider it a lesser product (like it currently is with the A5 and no retina display).

This is where the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 come up to bat. You can actually get work done on them.

I am going to get slain for this...

But why don't they add a flash to the iPad camera? Now don't get me wrong. I am just as annoyed as the rest of you at the countless number of people busting out their ipads to take photos. It looks ridiculous. It is ridiculous. But, fact is, people are doing it. May as well give them a good experience taking photos, no?

It has exposed metap but the mini cover does not I wonder why they kept tge exposed

I hope they keep the leather covers around.
And I would love to get a leather SmartCover for my iPad Mini :)

It depends on how one consumes the content. I do know I use my computers and phones much less after getting the iPad because I love reading websites in a comfortable chair or bed with the iPad in the portrait orientation. The experience feels much more personable and focused to me and many others but not everyone likes that. On the other hand I tried hard to like the iPad Mini form factor but never warmed up to the smaller screen. If anything I want a bigger iPad, but the weight could be a problem.

No.

That would be the retina screen a few years ago. This just removes some of the bezel (finally). Nothing to see here really.
:apple:

Uhh... did you forget about the A7?

I spent some time comparing an iPhone 5S to my 5 in the Apple store the other day and it's incredible. It will open up the iPad to all kinds of new software.

If there's "nothing to see" it's because you're not looking that hard.

I use mine on my lap in bed. I use a really cool pillow/stand (wedge pillow ) or something like that. Anyway, after while other things feel really heavy as the iPad is so light, so it just sort of hops up on my lap on its own :)

I have no control of it

64 bit gaming? A thinner ipad will be a huge boon as this is most reviewers main complaint right now. Plus there's always the hope of IGZO....

I love the Mini's bright red (and non-leather) cover, with the black (soon to be space gray). I hope the subdued red isn't for real. Just my tastes. Looks real though! Don't care either way about the hinge style--I like both in different ways. (You'd think Apple wouldn't want to stock both silver and gray hinges though.)

It's at least possible these are clones based on the known dimensions plus aping the old hinge design, but it's simpler to assume they're just real Apple covers. Serial number placement is consistent.

Here's how it fits in for me: you can hold it in your hand, on your chest, flat on the table, walking around, and all sorts of ways that are really awkward with an L-shaped (and much heavier) laptop. I love my 11" Air and I run my business on it, but when I'm not doing mass typing or Photoshop/3D, I grab the iPad.

If you want a keyboard all the time, get a laptop. Unless the iPad has all the apps you need and you like the simplicity/security, then an iPad "laptop-ized" with a full-time attached keyboard is OK (niche audience).

If you want a keyboard only sometimes, get an iPad plus keyboard. (I think I might--Logitech makes the thing Microsoft copied to make their Surface covers, and other brands make ones like it now too. I want real, nice, physical keys AND instant attach/remove, without a bulky case. Something like Logitech's Ultrathin keyboard covers fit the bill.)

And of course, get what has the apps you need. (Many people will need a Mac. Many won't.)

If the iPads got phone qualities then I wouldn't actually need the phone. The iPad would be enough.
Which is why you’ll never see that.

Ditto. I use and marvel at my wife’s iPad2 until it’s time to actually do something work-related with it.

This is precisely why I say the get the MBA 11” instead of the iPad. It does Windows. Nothing against MS but my brain and habits are too heavily invested in Apple's walled garden. I can't get out.

In your situation, I think you have the best equipment for getting things done!

Here's my current set up:

iPhone 5S
Kindle
rMBP 15"
Mac Pro

Mac Pro for heavy duty/home server/home use.
rMBP for mobile/heavy duty/design/goes to work with me
iPhone 5s for games/light reading/reading blogs on the go/texting and calling
Kindle for reading

So an iPad mini (64 GB) would be perfect for me to handle my consumption needs at the gym, couch, or even at work. It will replace my kindle for reading and will be a step up from my iphone for my blog reading.

If I were you I would get an Apple TV, if you don't already have one!

I've had a few smart covers, they're OK but nothing that great...

What I REALLY Like is the iPad Smart Case.

It's a very well made case that covers and protects the front, back and sides of my iPad 4. It fits nice and close, has a very smooth tactile grippy feel, and comes in a variety of colors. I've seen lots of people with these, yet for reasons I will never understand, Apple does not make one for my iPad mini. I'd buy it in a second.

But alas, Apple's not particularly consistent so that's no surprise. They're leaving money on the table, a sign that they aren't quite as greedy as their huge margins suggest. Check it out here:

Tried the Smart Case and really did not like it. It felt loose on the iPad 3, and had a hard edge that was uncomfortable to hold.

Incipio makes a nice hard-shell back for the iPad3 & 4 that's thin, comfortable, and is made to fit over the smart cover hinge to lock the smart cover onto the iPad. That combo is the best case/cover I've used with any tablet.

That's some pretty heavy duty gear my friend. Personally, I could replace the Mac Pro with a rMBP15/Cinema display for my needs. Then, perhaps the iPad would fit me but I still find dragging a rMBP15 around to be more cumbersome than an 11" MBA.

I'm sure you have the need for that Mac Pro though.

And I must be the only one who actually prefers reading ebooks on an iPhone vs. a kindle or iPad. It's light. You can hold it in one hand easily, flick pages with a thumb and plop it into any pocket. One less device to maintain. Maybe I just like the novelty of carrying 1500 books on a phone wherever I go.

If I had a bill gates size pocket, I would manufacture some crazy shaped iPad covers and make them floating around when theres a new iPad to be announced and see what people says about it...

what sort of work are you getting done on your surface tablet? not theoretically, but actually.

me, the only work i need to do w/ my tablet is email and world processing, occasionally flipping to a sleepy spreadsheet or two that work perfectly in Numbers. im not designing logos in Illustrator or doing touch-up work in Photoshop...and i doubt many others are doing that on a small tablet to start with.

so...what am i missing? as a home office worker most of my work is textual.

That's a fair point. I don't really have numbers either, just that I see people using it all over the place in Boston. Realistically, a rear facing camera is not even necessary if all you are using it for is facetime. It's just as easy to flip the device around, right? Not saying you are wrong, or that I am right, just thinking out loud is all.

There has been a time or two I wished I had the flashlight feature handy though.
Don't worry, I have seen tons of people using their iPad's as cameras. Even a couple while we were hiking on trails. Very odd place to bring a iPad.
