I am not interested in making an iPad purchase right now. However I may be in a number of months to come, so the iPad 3 may be interesting to me. I view it as a toy.

Anyone who doesn't share my views is entitled to their own opinion. However please don't tell me that I'm some sort of "bad consumer" because I won't buy an iPad 2, or because I want to wait. It's not like not having a tablet is going to negatively impact me.

Seems like most people are mad that I don't want an iPad 2 right now, even though I'm interested in it. I don't care. I'm a big boy, I've made my own big-ticket purchases many times, so I know what really hits home for me when it comes to these sorts of purchases: and it's not going to hit home if I buy it today.

@DaForce (post#18): Thanks. I'm sort-of looking for a wow factor... however I feel like the iPad 2 already has that wow factor in its construction (the way its body looks, screen, etc). I'm just waiting for a little extra touch to make it a bit more desirable (extra wow is always welcomed lol... 3D would do it). If I hadn't bought a Macbook Air, a new bike, a new desktop, new tower speakers & receiver, a new computer screen, a new e-reader, and a number of other smaller purchases in the past 8 months, I'd probably own an iPad 2 right now: I'm not rich though, and I'm careful with my money and how I buy things, and I don't need a tablet... so it's the waiting game for me.

Dude, then wait. It's ok. People are merely pointing out that since you don't really know exactly what you are waiting for, it's very difficult to tell you that the next device will definitely have it.

The only party that really knows the answer to your questions is Apple - they know what the iPad 3 will offer, and when. Sadly, they choose not to share that with the rest of us until shortly before launch.

I'm curious - have you played with other brands of tablets? Do any of them rock your world?

What I'm getting at is that the thread is about two quick questions. I tend to be long-winded in favour of being short-winded (not by choice but by habit), so I probably shouldn't have mentioned that I'm not interested in buying an iPad 2: but that's the way it is. The thread wasn't meant to ask for peoples' opinions on this or that... I'm satisfied with my opinion ^_^ But as far as rumors/evidence goes, I'm not in the know, so that is where I was/am most interested.

I have seen some other tablets. Most are not impressive. There are a couple that are quite nice though. The blackberry tablet is decent (not sure of the model or if there's multiples out at the moment), and there's one other which is very nice (looks almost identical to the iPad 2... again, not sure of the model).

I do have my eyes on other-brand tablets as a possibility. It's the same as laptops: a competitor can always hit a home run as well. However, just like the Macbook Air 2011 (which I waited on), I think the iPad will shine ahead of its competitors even when the iPad 3 is released. It's a wait-and-see scenario though. I don't mind waiting. And I look forward to seeing. :)

Sounds good.

And yes, I view it as a toy (don't know why this would annoy anyone... I don't view my Macbook Air as a toy, yet it very well could be to me or anyone else depending on what one's lifestyle is like... if someone called the Air a toy I wouldn't be upset... in fact I wonder what screw is loose in someone's head to actually get upset at someone calling a consumer product like a tablet a toy).
My screws are loose, my thoughts are ajumble, and I obviously haven't made my muddled thoughts clear. I'll try one last time. As I said, it's fine if you see it as a toy. It's not that you called it a toy (I suppose all of my gadgets have that potential). It's your attitude towards the responses. I get it now that you don't want to buy an iPad, that you don't really care about generating a discussion beyond the two questions. I found it irritating, but that's cool. It's your thread.

Word to the wise, if you only want yes, no or maybe answers, with no other discussion, you probably want to limit the information flow in your original question. Or, just relax and let people respond. You don't have to take everyone's word to heart. In fact, you should do what I do. Listen to all of the advice, and then just go with the advice that agrees with what you planned to do all along. ;)

I'm looking to purchase an iPad in the future. I am certain I will not purchase an iPad 2: I want to wait for a superior & newer version. So it's an iPad 3 which I am looking to at the moment. For me, an iPad would first and foremost be a toy (and I don't think it's quite worth $519 + taxes to me yet), and it might also function as a productivity device as well... though I'm not quite certain how well it would serve me in that way.

What I am wondering are these two things:
1) Is there any evidence that the iPad will be refreshed sooner than a 365 day cycle?
2) Is there any evidence/likelihood that the iPad 3 would sport a no-glasses 3D display?

[edit]: View post #11 if you're going to leave a nasty comment. This is getting out of hand.

#1 - There are rumors and speculation, no hard evidence, and most people familiar with Apple's update patterns don't consider the rumors to be very credible. I would say there's less than a 25% chance of this happening.

#2 - There aren't even rumors of this. 0% chance. The iPad 3 will likely have a retina display (and personally, I think that's a strike against rumor #1, because no way will they have a retina display ready to produce at volume by September, and I'm doubting they'd release an iPad 3 without it).

The changes to the iPad 2.5 (it's unlikely to be an entirely new generation) will be minimal at best. I would advise you get the iPad 2 as the changes refine the first generation and, as such, the refinements of the second model will therefore be gratuitous, as there isn't much left to refine. So you'll get more bang for your buck with iPad 2. I a proud owner of iPad 2. It's a perfect supplement to a laptop. I'm a very hard-working university student so I need access to journal articles, notes, Internet, previous essays, etc throughout a working day. Last year I had a horror-film experience of having to drag around my bulky HP piece of crap for the above reasons, and iPad goes above and beyond in functioning as a work device. It's also super light; it's akin to carrying a pad of paper. It's the most useful and versatile notebook I've ever owned. I strongly advise buying one. Sure, it would never substitute a laptop but it's not designed to do that. It's also incredibly fast and the interactive touch-screen nature of the device is delightful. You will be pleased with an iPad if you get one. Definitely not just a toy but an indispensable work accompaniment. If you want you can also buy the Bluetooth or dock keyboard, but i have no problem using the onscreen keyboard. It's not something I'd use to write essays but it's fine for everything else. Every student should own one. Another essential piece of advice: go white.
