Yes it is an expensive toy... (So in fact is my dual screen iMac desktop, or my stereo system I do not actually need either of these things but I could afford them so I bought them)

But it is also the best media consumption device ever invented.

It also has the potential to become one of the the most useful pieces of technology ever invented.

I have already seen it used by a politician in parliament to read a speech from.

Newscasters use it instead of a screen.

Students use it as a book replacement.

I would not be surprised if NASA used it with astronauts to help with pre flight checks.

Sailors use it for navigation.

Some of us live in a very privileged position where the owning of gadgets or expensive toys if you will are a possibility, now I am not bragging or anything like that because I feel we should be very grateful for the possibility that we can acquire such things.

However lets not fool ourselves, every thing we own from the car we drive to the clothes we wear are all privileges of luxury. Many people in this world do not even have food to eat, this should be our main concern, we should not be arguing over whether or not a piece of equipment is actually a toy or not...

Stuff gets invented, great lets find ways to use it to help other people or just sit back and play angry birds the choice is yours.

I bought the large screen 27 inch Imac desktop for the basic reason of wanting a large screen for main reason of wanting to watch tv on it

To me, it's a glorified toy, but I never owned the first one (and I don't have my iPad 2, yet.) There isn't anything, at least to my knowledge, that I absolutely need an iPad to accomplish, or that it will accomplish better than my any of my other devices. Of course, my opinion will probably change when I actually get my hands on my iPad (which should be here within the next week, hopefully). I've used my friend's iPad 2, and just with the Flipboard app, I think the iPad 2 will be my new method of browsing the web and whatnot. Garage Band is fun to play around with, and many games are just that much better with a big screen. Great, now I'm even more anxious for it to ship...

I don't read toys.

I don't write on toys, let alone type on them.

I don't let my dogs chew on my iPad.

I do believe a lot of owners aren't power users or even readers...but so what?

Last but not least, I rarely see adults go to the restroom with a toy...you can figure out the rest.

PS: fun thread...

Well, it kinda is...though I don't see why that's a bad thing?

For me it's an indulgence pure and simple, I can't pretend I'm one of those people in a cheesy Apple ad who claims that the iPad has made their life better or whatever. I didn't do any real work on mine, I just used it whenever I was away from my Macbook Pro and wanted something to play about on. :p

When I was in medical school I used some of my fellow medical students as toys. Now as an attending I view them more as tools.

Seriously, another one of these debates?!?

For many, it is a toy. For some its a tool.

Who cares what people think or say about the iPad, I buy/use my devices not based on what others say but how it fits my needs or my desires.

i have seen many people saying that ipad is just a toy. this really bothers me.

It's rather close minded of them but you can't really blame them for thinking it though when you see iPad owners dressing their gadgets up in toy-like pastel covers and cases or skins with cheezy graphics. It's no different that a lawyer walking into court dressed like a clown. Hard to take that person seriously from that point. Same goes w/ an iPad dressed in non-business appropriate attire.

My BMW is a glorified toy as well.

Yes, but BMWs are toys. Fun ones too. :D

For me it is becoming more of a tool but still has some significant limitations, keeping it more in the toy category. I think the reason this topic even comes up is that many view it as product that is still work in progress. For instance, you can do nearly anything on a MacPro or MacBook Pro because the product and most importantly, the OS is a mature product.

But OS on the iPad has some serious limitations that would not be that hard to overcome.

So unlike my other tools, the iPad won't likely pull it's weight but since it is the future of mobile computing, it's still better to get on now.

I can see how something like this would have been useful when I was a medical student back in the day.

Out in private practice now, it has no use in my office. If I need to look something up, there are computers everywhere with proper keyboards. But I believe that will drastically change within the next 2 years: the iPad is the future of electronic medical records.

Haters_Gonna_Hate_Jenelle_Evans.gif

I don't know who that is, but I hate her already.

A medical student who doesn't know how to use capital letters. What has the world come to? Sorry, but that's just sad.. Anyway, I agree, the iPad is much more than just a toy, it's an extremely powerful device.

People say I don't need my 4X4 truck cause I never haul anything
People say I don't need unlimited data on my iPhone cause I never go over
People say I shouldn't drink Diet Coke cause it is bad for me
People say I don't need an iPad cause I have a MBP and an iPhone
People say I shouldn't have a gym membership cause I never go

I don't particularly care what people say about what I buy or what I do

Like a dildo, iPad provides pleasure to the user and all those around.

i am sorry but it is a GLORIFIED TOY. but hey, it is soooooooooo cool. you can afford it fine if not booo ouh

Per my signature, I can assure you that the iPad is most assuredly not a toy.

Are you even paying attention to the world around you?
