Yes. It was not called the iPad 4.

For those keeping score, here are the 9.7" tablets Apple has introduced in order:

iPad
iPad 2
The New iPad with Retina Display
The New iPad with Retina Display (4th generation)
iPad Air
iPad Air 2

...so therefore we can conclude that next October Apple will release The New iPad Air with Retina 4K Display

Sadly, my local Apple Store has not received any yet. They are still quoting 'coming soon' as no one knows when they are coming. Quite disappointing.

When you look at the naming conventions overall, it's a bit confusing.

iPad
iPad 2
The new iPad
iPad with Retina display
iPad Air
iPad Air 2

Unless you're an Apple fan, you'd be forgiven for being confused about which device fits where in the family. Even more confusing when you consider "Air" is the name of Apple's low-end laptops, but high-end tablets.
I was confused when I bought my iPad, I managed to get the only one that wasn't as good as it's predecessor and was updated 6 months later. At least I got a maxxed out cellular one though :(

It wasn’t The New iPad with Retina Display, it was simply "the new iPad” then iPad with retina display.

Anyone see a cellular model yet? The article seems to say wifi are available, but no mention of the other appearing yet.

My shipping status changed and my card was charged. Says it will ship between today and Friday with an expected delivery of the 27th. Got the Silver 128GB LTE model.

I guess it had to do with the guy being confused whether or not he had an iPad Air 2 or iPad Air 1. The box only said iPad Air, so I think that threw him a bit.

Yes - that's probably the reason for the 'Total Confusion' title.

But why is the Mute/Lock button gone?!

As someone already wrote, it saves space & weight in the device, also costs for Apple. Maybe the button has confused some people with the 'Rotation lock' function. Some time ago I didn't know this feature (there's no permanent display symbol for that) and thought the iPad is not working properly, when I tried to change from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa ....

The iPad 3 was only called The New iPad

It probably saved some space internally. And since there is a software solution in the Control Center it's consistent with Apple's design philosophy.

So why have volume buttons since they also have a software solution in Control Center?

Let me guess: someone is going to spin how it makes perfect sense to persist hard buttons for volume but eliminate the hard button for mute... probably even offer an example of how important it is to be able to change volume without having to look at the screen but it's not as important to be able to mute volume without looking at a screen.

I'm a little surprised at the comments about the mute switch. It has been leaked weeks ago that it was gone and people are still surprised?

Will someone submit a proper unboxing video so that one may be replaced. Pretty please.

Proper? Like it is a movie genre? Seriously. He unboxed. And the whole thing was very authentic. Most people will wonder whether they were sent the wrong iPad before they open it and don't want to open the new box if they are going to send it back.

Also the fact that he couldn't tell if the iPad 2 was actually real just by looking at it is also significant. It is not much different in his opinion.

Maybe everyone on the planet doesn't read MacRumors every day

Sure wish I knew where mine was. UPS hasn't updated with the provided tracking number yet.

Does your UPS driver have a new iPad? hmm.

Yes, it has been leaked weeks ago - but it was not clear if the leaked photos have shown the genuine iPad Air 2 or what the state of development really was ....

I don't understand why anyone would view this guy as stupid, when it's Apple that's is stupid.

If you make a product called the iPad Air, then next year, you release a new model and you as a company call it the iPad Air 2.

Then why as a company would you seal it inside a box with iPad Air written on the outside.

That is the only stupid aspect going on here.
It's what Apple usually does, and not just Apple.

The box my iPhone 6+ came in says "iPhone". On the back in small print, you can see the model number 6+.

When Apple shipped The New iPad, the box said simply "iPad" in large letters.

You can bet the farm on that.

I don't see how these new models will stop the sales slide of the iPad line. People new to the iPad will buy whatever's out there. But there isn't much of a compelling reason to upgrade right now (especially with the Mini).

I'll be someone, just hold volume button down to mute, that's how I've always done it and, I don't have to look at screen to do it. Imagine that.;)

I don't have anything against the mute switch, I can take or leave it, but we do need the volume buttons until Apple tells me I don't.;)

Just kind of surprised at how many people it bothers.

I guess 2 GB of ram, 3 cores and faster wasn't enough.:cool::apple::apple:

Even more confusing, the old names are no longer valid. Apple changed the names if you watch their keynote:

Old Name = New Name
iPad = iPad 1
iPad 2 = iPad 2
the new iPad = iPad 3
iPad with Retina Display = iPad 4
iPad Air = iPad Air 1
iPad Air 2 = iPad Air 2
