Let me guess: someone is going to spin how it makes perfect sense to persist hard buttons for volume but eliminate the hard button for mute... probably even offer an example of how important it is to be able to change volume without having to look at the screen but it's not as important to be able to mute volume without looking at a screen.

The mute is integrated into the volume buttons now. You hold the volume down button and it will mute. Personally I have my iPad volume off most of the time, so I won't miss the mute button, but I frequently used the lock screen rotation function, so I'm not sure if I'll miss the mechanical button yet. (I'm sure I'll get used to it, whatever the case.)

Even more confusing, the old names are no longer valid. Apple changed the names if you watch their keynote:

Old Name = New Name
iPad = iPad 1
iPad 2 = iPad 2
the new iPad = iPad 3
iPad with Retina Display = iPad 4
iPad Air = iPad Air 1
iPad Air 2 = iPad Air 2

Who really gives a frogs fat ass???:cool:
:apple::apple::apple:

So why have volume buttons since they also have a software solution in Control Center?

You don't have to look at the screen to mute the volume. Just hold down the volume down button until the volume is at zero. It doesn't take long.

That's what most people were doing anyway on older models when they had the toggle switch in orientation mode. For those people, when they use the switch, they are looking at the screen anyway, because why would you care about locking the orientation if you aren't looking at the screen?

I now have a UPS tracking number for my Air 2. This morning, it was still being prepared for shipping, and this thread made me go back and check. UPS's site says once they have it, they'll give a delivery date. I'm near Philadelphia, so I'm guessing a day or two.

I'll do a proper unboxing then. I dropped my wife's Air onto the floor last year while unboxing it, so maybe I can test out the new screen. :D

I, for one, am glad that they didn't come out with an "iPad Pro" or a larger iPad of some kind (yet). This is what I *really* want to replace my hand-me-down iPad 3 BUT I still have this bad pain directly on my right buttocks area, just between the fabric of my jeans... it's sore...

I really need to recover from that first!!

But why is the Mute/Lock button gone?!

So people have something to complain about.

My iPhone 6 Plus also doesn't have a mute/lock button. Nobody complains about that. Perhaps because hardly anyone ever uses the switch? Or because the same functionality is now so easily accessible via software that such a switch is pointless?

Why isn't there a Wifi-on/off switch on the iPad? Or a "Launch camera" button on the iPhone? I would use these much much more often than the mute/lock switch. Yet nobody complains about the lack of a Wifi or camera button.

----------

I thought you guys were all being dramatic but that really was painful to watch.
I usually don't watch unboxings, but I watched because of the comments. It was kinda worth it. ;)

I love the moment where he gets somewhat panicky and rips the protective film off the iPad quite unceremoniously.

Your iPhone 6 Plus has a mute switch.

I don't see how these new models will stop the sales slide of the iPad line. People new to the iPad will buy whatever's out there. But there isn't much of a compelling reason to upgrade right now (especially with the Mini).

Yup. I've got an iPad2 (that I'll get rid of) and an Air. I'll upgrade when there's 256GBs.

Is the new mute really mute? On my ancient iPad Air 1 holding the down volume is really 'turn down quickly', not 'turn off right away'. And after using it you have to get the volume back up to where it was, and not just have it pop back to where it was. Maybe it is different on the iPA2.

Although I do share the confusion with the name on the box not being iPad Air 2, I still don't like that video. You could clearly feel that this guy has only basic knowledge of Apple products. I mean it was announced and advertised that the iPad Air 2 has the Touch ID sensor, which makes it easy recognizable when comparing to older devices. So he should have known that... Instead his daughter or whoever is filming, had to tell him that it's indeed Touch ID.

I really don't want to blame this guy not knowing such things, there are millions of people out there that will ask themselves the exact same question.
But why do these people have to film themselves unpacking an Apple product and uploading it to YouTube? He didn't sound very enthusiastic about the product itself, which makes the whole video a bad experience. And a real unboxing - in my point of view - should also show the box itself and the rest that comes with the iPad.

Please Macrumors, replace this video as soon as possible with a better video. Just because he may be the first one unboxing the new iPad, it must not be the best video... ;-)

When the "iPad" 3 was released Apple stated that the "iPad" would just be called "iPad" from then on. It took on all the names you mentioned after the iPad 3 release.

I was pissed after they release the iPad 4 as it wasn't a full cycle after the iPad 3.

When you look at the naming conventions overall, it's a bit confusing.

iPad
iPad 2
The new iPad
iPad with Retina display
iPad Air
iPad Air 2

Unless you're an Apple fan, you'd be forgiven for being confused about which device fits where in the family. Even more confusing when you consider "Air" is the name of Apple's low-end laptops, but high-end tablets.

So next year we'll be getting "The new iPad Air" if all follows course.

No luck for me ;-(

I'm in the UK - I orderd my iPad Air 2 on the 17th October and got a delivery date of 22nd October. Today that changed to 30th October. Another week to wait for me. So much for 2-4 days delivery!

of course it makes the ad *look* a whole lot better showing a beat up iPad 2 and a shiny new iPad Air 2 still the box.

Ay least the best thing he could have done was clean his his iPad 2 before showing it. And if it was that bad anyway "What the hell do people do with their devices"

Kick em round the footy field??

I don't think so.. the point is that they AREN'T following course.

There is no predictable naming strategy, either successive generations of a product line, or comparisons between different products.

Mine says the same thing, delivers 10/22-10/24 but is still in processing? WTF?

Maybe - maybe not

OK, I'm seeing things now. Just checked again, and while my iPad is still "Processing", the date has changed back to the 24th.

Oh it's like a roller-coaster!

Shipping ipad air 2

I pre-ordered within a few minutes of their site coming online after it was down.

At the time of purchase, said 1-2 days delivery.

6 days later, I get a confirmation (today) that it is ready for shipping via TNT, and estimates it will arrive 31st.

So overall, their 1-2 days works out to be 14 days.

Why not just admit 2-3 weeks. So yet again it would have been easier just walking into a shop and buying one, than pre-ordering.

Pff... iPad air2... How not exciting.

As an iPad 2 owner, I can't help but wonder if the medium isn't dead yet. I find it too large to type messages and too small to use pages. That video review of wsj is totally right, it's not comfortable enough and not productive enough.

I would have bought an iPad mini3 for my media consumption if it wasn't beaten by Apple with the lame stick.

Funny, i ordered at 11:30AM on the 17th, and this is what i got at 12:30ish pm today.

awesome...

Im done preordering ****. Makes no difference.
