I'm wondering, why the sudden need for 2gb of RAM?

The air, aside from safari, is fine with 1gb. I've even multi-tasked on it using os experience and didn't notice any issues running multiple apps at once - sure it's not a reliable thing to go off but still.

My point is - is there something good coming for them to add 2gb? The screen wasn't updated and the iPhones didn't get - I would have thought the plus would have at least.

The third core and extra gig of RAM, to me, clearly suggests something good *is* coming. Possibly a new iOS update to go with the 12.9" iPad "pro" will also unlock capabilities in the Air 2 (e.g., split-screen multitasking etc.)

That said, move to 2 GB is overdue anyway.

Now iPad Air 2 future buyers can breathe in peace...

...At least until the body enclosures start to bend.

Won't be long before Apple can ditch Intel for their consumer portable line of Macs...

I hope not because the last Intel MBP is the last MBP I will ever buy. If I can't run Windows on my Mac, it's game over for me as far as the Mac is concerned. It's just the nature of the beast in my line of work.

The 2GB of memory and throw in the extra core for good measure make this a tempting upgrade from my 4 while I can still get some money for it.

The other side of this, does this make it more likely for the iPhone 6s to have 2GB?

arm-based 3-core CPU? hmm.. something really odd, to be honest
How dare they have an odd number of cores! How dare they defy the wisdom of anonymous MR posters! The arrogance to think they are pro chip designers!

Nice... not a launch day purchase for me but now might bite at updating my Air to an Air 2 depending on what deals occur these next couple of months.

Wow!

I've always been curious about something...

Do the Geekbench 3 tablet scores correspond with Geekbench 3 desktop scores? For example, my old 2008 iMac scored 1700 Single-Core, and 3000 Multi-Core on GB3.

Could one assume the new iPad Air is equally as fast as a 2008 iMac or no?

Wow... just browse around GeekBench and have fun comparing the iPad Air 2 to Macs..!!

Won't be long before Apple can ditch Intel for their consumer portable line of Macs...

I know.. It's about twice as fast as my 2010 Macbook pro.

What if iPad pro hits next year with iOS versions of the pro apps? IPad for the first time may be the first alternative to a Mac laptop.

Just for kicks, here are the benchmarks for all the machines I own:

21.5" iMac (2.5 GHz quad core i5, Mid 2011) = 2960 / 7897
13" MacBook Air (1.7 GHz dual core i7, Mid 2013) = 3155 / 6191
iPhone 6 = 1609 / 2879
iPhone 6+ = 1596 / 2854
Nexus 5 = 818 / 2422
Kindle Fire HDX (7") = 881 / 2646
iPad Air = 1472 / 2664
iPhone 5S = 1400 / 2523

And the new iPad Air 2 = 1812 / 4477

This new Air 2 is only about 27% slower than my top of the line MacBook Air from the end of 2013.

exact same dilemma! Only add my 2009 iMac for the riMac :)
They all work fine, but the new ones are so nice!
I've never used this hashtag before, and normally hate it, but this is the ultimate example of #firstworldproblems !
