The iPad mini to me clearly compromises Apple's "we want to make the best product possible"-incentive. Don't know how I feel about that.

Totally agree here... this is a big miss on Apple part. And makes that statement meaningless.

The need for iPad Mini 3 decreased significantly with the introduction of iPhone 6 Plus and thinner, lighter iPad Air. And looks like apple lost faith in it too.

I think it would have made sense for them to just discontinue it if they didn't want to do it right (which they didn't). I had been hoping for the Mini 3 to have received some solid upgrades so that it could replace my iFone.

"The display on the iPad Air 2 [...] is actually slightly lower in performance than the original iPad Air (for example 8% lower Brightness and 16% lower display Power Efficiency) – most likely the result of an obsession with producing a thinner Tablet forcing compromises in the LCD backlight"

Thin-ness madness....

And how does this impact me as an end user? I don't remember any review complaining about brightness. I'm getting my Air 2 today. Is 8% lower brightness going to give me a bad experience and cause me to return the device?

The iPad Mini 3 was intentionally shafted as it's quickly become the show-stopper iPad everyone wants. They could have easily given it the A8, ect.

Why would someone buy the iPad Air, if the Mini has the same processor, same resolution, same performance, and is $100 cheaper?

People on here don't know how to think like a business... they think like consumers, so your logic falls mostly on deaf ears.
They think; "me want this, why :apple: no give me this?" without ever considering that there is a business model in place.

As for this article though, I'm a little disappointed that the Air 2's screen actually falls short in a few areas compared to the original Air's screen. I picked up the Air 2 due to my daughter's iPad 2 starting to run a poorly, so I took advantage of the Best Buy $200 trade in and gave her my rMini, which as opposed to some people on this site, I think has been great and I am still very satisfied with it.

My only "want" from this generation was a thinner rMini. I have a keyboard case that the 2nd (and now 3rd) rMini is too thick for.

Thanks for continuing to be the most objective source for Apple reporting. This article is an example of precisely what's missing from most other outlets.

It just feels to me now like the people running Apple today don't care anymore. It's like they just aren't hungry any more. Yes a lot of them worked hard to get there, but since they "inherited" the company, they'd prefer to live the good life, hang out at the most fabulous and exclusive partys, with the most exclusive and fun artists, play with their giant yaghts, and hook up all their new friends with sweetheart deals funneling billions this way and that.

That's what it feels like anyway.

I feel like a few bad quarters, poor sales, and a stock price plummet are NEEDED at this point to get some fresh leadership in there before what talent remains takes off for Google.

Really how difficult would it have been for Apple to rev the mini and add:

- A8
- Bonded display
- Anti reflective coating
- TouchID

Most people would probably have been happy with that....but instead they are treating it like the iPod.

just sold my wife's iPad mini no need for a 6+And a small iPad

Yeah. The iPad Air had far more brightness than was needed for common environments except for ones with a lot of ambient light, like outdoors in daylight.

But the Air 2's anti-reflective coating more than compensates for the small decrease in brightness in that case.

Yeah, just the new display tech (still using the A7) would’ve been a nice update. Clearly just the A8 would’ve been a decent performance bump too without introducing the additional power and thermal issues of the A8X.

I wonder if we’ll see the two iPads return to the [near] matching specifications on the next iteration. I feel like Apple did as little as possible this cycle to determine if the Mini is going to get cannibalized by the new iPhones (most specifically the 6+).

The anti-reflective coating is definitely noticeable side by side. The original Air looks like a mirror, with the display off, while the Air 2 still shows outlines of things but far less detail and less bright.

In the real-world with the screen on it seems slightly better, the main problem is the backlight gets overpowered by the sun.

We popped into the Apple store on Saturday and side-by-side it’s definitely a decent improvement, even if it’s minor. The new display tech on the Air 2 with the bonded display is fantastic (including the iPhone 6/6+)

I disagree. I upgraded from the Mini 2 to the Air 2 and like the thinness. It makes a difference with the overall size of the device and how it feels in hand. I tried the original Air last year but went with the Mini 2 as it was essentially the same apart from the display.

I think Apple would rather you buy an iPhone 6+ instead of a iPad Mini 3 which is why they didn't do much to it. Also I think they really would rather you buy an iPad Air 2 now instead of a mini 3. I don't think it would make business sense for them to make the Mini 3 as powerful as the Air or 6+. I think the 6+ is meant to cannibalize the Mini's and the Air's will be the 3rd device. iPhone 6 or 6+ iPad Air and Macbook Pro. Why would anyone buy a 6+ and a Mini 3? doesn't make sense but people may surely buy a 6+ and an iPad Air 2. my 2cents

Was thinking the same thing. As a 6+ owner and a former Mini2 owner, even if Apple had fully upgraded the Mini3 I would still lean towards the Air2.

I had my iPad Mini 2 for less than 24 hours before I took it back because of the poor color gamut. Surprising that they didn't improve this with the 3.

264 ppi is out of date. I can see individual pixels.

I thought I was the only one. for me the ipad Display never seemed to have "retina character" . It was always in an uncanny valley of retina. I kind of wish they would have pushed it beyond the 300 ppi border in this generation

All products should have the anti-glare!!

Why don't they put the anti-reflective coating on ALL their products. iMac, MBP, MBA, etc???

I am tired of having to buy custom covers for this purpose. When all they have to do is spray some crap on the screen at the factory.

So, not only the screen suffers distortions when you hold it and it vibrates like a plane when it plays sound, but also the display is basically worse than last year's in nearly every aspect other than the gimmick-like coating? Nice!

And that's the device with the "good" update, to say nothing of the Mini 3.

Agree completely as I am one of those customers. I owned a Mini but sold it when it was not fitting-in with my needs. Then when I started seeing those Samsungs popping up I started getting anxious. The perfect size. An iPad Mini...Mini of sorts.

Now I can finally get one with the iPhone 6 Plus!

I sent the Mini back last year, as it looked so muddy next to my Air. I know a lot of people don't think it is a major issue, but when you look at them side-by-side the difference is glaring.

Now I have a similar situation comparing the high-contrast iPhone 6 plus screen to the comparatively low-contrast screen on the Air. As I understand it, the 2nd-gen Air does not have a significantly higher contrast ratio, which is a real shame. If I am wrong and it does, I'll probably upgrade.

I previously had a 5s and an iPad mini 2. I have the 6 now (not the 6 Plus). I'd have gotten an updated mini 3 if it had A8 and the thinner design with the bonded screen. I opted for the Air 2 since I really wanted Touch ID but wanted additional features that weren't already on my existing iPad mini 2.

Just a theory but considering Apple's level of detail in everything do you notice in the ad posted in the article the photo placed on the iPad mini 3? It's got more of a green color than purple on the iPad Air 2. I've played with a mini 3 and found that like the mini 2 the display lacks in color richness in reds. The ad then tries to make the mini 3's display look better by avoiding the colors they know it lacks in

I love Soneira's reviews, they offer a rare level of insight and analysis.

I'm actually of the opinion that the minor display performance trade-offs were worth the extra thinness on the iPad. Since a tablet is meant to be held for long periods lightness is of prime importance. The reduction in thickness this time didn't amount to a huge weight loss, but incremental changes like this will eventually result in an even more incredibly light tablet.

The Mini worries me about Apple's judgment post-Jobs. Someone at Apple believes they can slap a high price on a substandard product and call it premium so long as it's got a signature Ive design. It's a short-sighted strategy as the extra profits now will be offset by irrepairable harm to Apple's reputation and market share. Even Apple's "Retina" branding is diluted at the very moment it expands to the iMac line. Do Apple really want people to think the "Retina" display in the iPad Mini is what to expect in an iMac? Because that's exactly what the average consumer will think: "Retina stands for dull washed out subnormal display at stupid high price."

Apple count on a gimped Mini to drive Air 2 sales. It's a flagrant contempt for their customers. Do I submit to their will or keep dealing with Android's random reboots?

These are display reviews which make accusations of being overpriced heavily weighted towards how the display looks.

The best displays out there are insanely good and the average user can only tell when they are side by side.

It does seem that Apple is letting the iPad Mini 3 just sort of sit there. It makes some sense as last year's model was a fantastic deal and this year it's about the iPhone 6 Plus.

It also makes sense if Apple wants to repurpose everything in light of an early 2015 iPad Pro of sorts.

Still, it's all great hardware. :D

I love my Air 2 but I feel sorry for those who were looking forward to a decent Mini 3 that were let down big time by Apple.

Apple should just stop making anything that is a "mini" considering how they botched the Mac Mini big time, as well.
