I haven't had a lockup like the one you described in a while. Are you running 8.1.2 and did you restore your iPad from a previous setup?
It was of course the newest FW because thats always the most obvious reason of problems. It was not really a reboot, more like a very fast reeboot. No, i did not restored the ipad, i dont even plugged it in my PC. Its complete new system without a sync to a computer because i dont need that.

what worries me a bit is the fact that i sometimes get electric shocks when i touch the outer ring of the homebutton. Not because of the ipad but because of i am charged up myself, i also get it when i touch other grounded objects from time to time. I just hope such electric shocks did not harm the ipad and its good isolated against such things. I also have some problems with games, they are crashing to the iOSD main screen very often. Especially the App table top racing.

My very first iPad air 2 wifi only model exhibited the same lockups. One minute I'm using the settings app the next it locks up or sometimes it will re spring the springboard. I looked at the diagnostic and found a panic log. I don't know why it did that but it happened to me twice. But the freezing in apps is random and not frequent but does happen. This was one week with the wifi model.

I traded in for an LTE model and I have not had one single freeze or lockup. It has been a week since and it's been trouble free! I don't know if it was that particular unit but this LTE air 2 doesn't have any issues. Checked the logs and not anything abnormal.

Love love love this air 2!!

Hey AliMacs, just a quick question, how did you check the diagnostic?
