Switched to the pro 9.7 from the air 2.

My only regret is that it isn't compatible with my previous air 2 keyboard set up.

Hmm, thinking of trading in my current iPad Air 16GB and getting a spare iPad 64GB or 128GB. Already have a Pro 9.7 256GB as my primary.

Are there any YouTube videos showing performance comparisons between the Air 2 and Pro 9.7 while web browsing?

iPad Air 2 64GB LTE (certified refurb) $570 (w/taxes and fees)
iPad Air 2 128GB LTE (certified refurb) $660 (w/taxes and fees)
iPad Pro 9.7 128GB LTE $880 (no sales tax)

Trying to determine if the Pro 9.7 is going to be worth the extra $220-310 given it'll only be a spare device.

Why do you need another device?

I find it useful to have spares (e.g. in case battery needs charging, device malfunctions, etc). Besides, my tech gets trickled down and I still have 2 iPad 3 64GB on iOS 6 that will eventually need to be replaced. My iPad 4 128GB both run iOS 6 and I can't quite give them up due to nostalgia. Normally would've passed along the Air but neither wanted it due to low storage.

Can't beat the price ($400)...but if going from air1 to air2 (same capacity)...I would have waited to score a refurb.

Yes, I would have totally done that, but I had a bunch of Best Buy gift cards I was using for the purchase, so I had to buy new at Best Buy. Otherwise, Apple refurbs are the best option.

I was a happy iPad Air user but had the opportunity to upgrade, after careful thought and looking at the Air 2 & the two versions of the Pro I opted for the 64GB Air 2.

My reasons?

The pencil - nice idea except that I have lost three Bamboo Styluses so far, having to keep track of a $100 pencil doesn't work well for me.

Keyboard? I have a pricey keyboard for my Air sitting in a box on a shelf, lol, I am good with the virtual keyboard.

Faster processor? I usually don't play graphic intensive games, I use my iPad for web surfing, social media, music and Netflix.

Cost - Aside from the price of the new Pro, cases and third party accessories are abundant for the Air 2 at attractive prices. I also got a decent price on an open box model.

I ended up with a 64GB Air 2 which feels like a substantial upgrade over my 32GB Air. The screen is simply lovely and the extra ram makes things much snappier. I do not miss the irritation of my Safari tabs constantly reloading.

The Pro is gorgeous, particularly the 12.9 version but it is basically more iPad than I need. I have a Rentina Pro for heavy work & an iPhone for camera use. My Air was my constant companion & I already love my new Air 2, I hope all of you are as happy with your choices as I am.

I got a refurbished Air 2 cellular 64g. A new Ipad Pro would have cost me £160 more and that’s just with 32gb
I think if you don’t need the pen, use it mostly for web , social media, watch films and what not the Air 2 is enough.
The key is to get a refurbished from Apple, at least you are saving even more and won’t feel as bad thinking you are buying an older model

Starting to have similar feelings as I'm discovering there aren't very many third party options as far as the type of keyboard I was using and cases for my iPad Air 2. If I didn't get such a killer deal on this pro set up I might go back to my air 2.

Don't get me wrong, the Pro's are beautiful, I looked long and hard at the 12.9 inch version, that screen is drool worthy! I have cancer and use my iPad heavily these days, I just sat down and reviewed how I use things like styluses, looked over my app library & decided on the iPad that is best for me. I am quite pleased with my new Air 2 :)

Beautiful thing Apple is doing here, making sure each person can meet their own needs :)

Oh well the 12.9 is a different story. I actually put up a post on craigslist looking for someone who'd want to trade their 12.9 for my 9.7 pro.

I like how you explain why you want/need another iPad by mentioning the 3 other spare iPads you have. No offence, but Apple definitely wants more consumers like you! :)

3+ years with 2GM RAM?

no smart, just wait an year

People keep and use iPads with less RAM for longer. How good an idea it is largely depends on what the user wants to do with it. After all, Apple is still supporting 5 year old devices with 512MB of RAM.

Apple supporting the device and it being a good user experience are two different things, I'd like to see how smoothly the iPad 9.7 Pro runs iOS 11 or 12, by then iPhone and iPads will all have had 4GB+ RAM for couple years

I recently posted a video of someone demonstrating a perfectly usable iPad 2 running iOS 9.1. Mileage varies, so to speak.

They could have put 4GB in the new Pro and it might still struggle in a few years due to increased cpu/GPU demands. Case in point, most argue that the iPad 3 became obsolete faster than the iPad 2 which has half the RAM because of other hardware limitations not being able to handle the increased demand of the Retina display. There are many factors that come into play.

Technically, two of the iPad 3s are not mine (although I'm the one who purchases all tech in the household). Besides, I didn't buy any Apple products in 2015 (used the "entertainment and hobbies" budget for that year to go to Universal Orlando, instead). :p Verizon and AT&T probably like me even better than Apple. :p

Mine:
iPad Pro 9.7 256GB VZW iOS 9
iPad Air 16GB VZW iOS 9 - might trade in
iPad 4 128GB VZW iOS 6 - keeping for collection
iPad 4 128GB ATT iOS 6 - keeping for collection
iPad 4 16GB VZW iOS 9 (bought for dad but he doesn't use it; ended up using it for firmware testing and as backup up-to-date iPad) - trading in
iPad 3 64GB WiFi iOS 9 (used to be mom's but gave her my VZW iPad 3 when I upgraded to iPad 4; ended up using it for firmware testing and Plex) - might trade in

Mom's:
iPad 3 64GB VZW iOS 6

Brother's:
iPad 3 64GB WiFi iOS 6

The 128GB iPad 4s were supposed to go to my mom and brother but I can't bring myself to give those babies up. Alas, neither mom and brother wanted the 16GB iPad Air and 16GB iPad 4 because storage is too little for them. In any case, I'll be trading in 2-3 current iPads so net cost for the spare should be fairly minimal ($10-320 depending on which model I pick).

Ah, so you personally only own 7 iPads. I can see why you might feel the need for another. :p

Incidentally, I'm a teacher, and your household owns more iPads than some schools I've worked at! Ever consider just donating some?

I highly doubt that because Apple still continues to support legacy devices and app developers follow suit. Look beyond the iPad 2 and think about the iPad 4. Think that won't be supported a while longer?

A 4gb Pro 9.7" would last 8-10 yrs with proper management. Don't your breath however...it probably won't happen until x+1.

Technically, that's 8 in the household but personally own just 6 (not 7) with 4 currently active (5/3 if you don't count the iPad 4 already on trade in). When I buy the spare iPad Air 2 or Pro, I'll be down to 2 active iPads as I'll also be trading in the iPad Air and iPad 3. One of the reasons I'm considering getting a more up to date spare is because I can still get fairly decent trade in value for my current ones which will offset majority of the cost (only $10 out of pocket if I go for Air 2 64GB LTE).

Honestly, I couldn't justify owning even a single "spare" iPad.

Tech is my hobby so honestly, I don't really feel the need to justify it to myself. I believe we're all allowed to spend money on what we consider "fun" as long as one can afford it. I'm fine driving 10+ year old Toyotas and Hondas (I don't drive much so hoping I might actually get 15-20 years from them). I rarely buy clothes and shoes. Not one for jewelry either. Tech is my splurge category.
