I was thinking this, unless they decide to introduce a retina Macbook Air, they can just do a ''refresh''.

Not sure what they could add to the iPad right now, unless they change some major functionality.

The A8 is more power efficient, so in theory, if they put it into the Ipad at the same clock rate as on the phone, you'd get substantial improvement in battery life. But, they could also boost its clock to 2GHz and make it 50% quicker...

If Apple does not introduce some new multitasking ways with the Ipad in the features and ways to take advantage of the big screen, the ipad line will follow in the footsteps of ipods.

Don't forget the iPod touch. Strong buzz that it too will see an update at the October event.

it's gotten so bad at this point, that if they come out with the same iPad Air but upgrade it to 2GB of memory...they could honestly boast about the greatest leap in performance ever in an iPad. and they would be spot on correct

I wonder if they're going to spend an extra few dollars and put some ram in this one, hopefully they'll be able to afford it.
@Medic, great minds think alike.

Quite frankly, the current iPad Air and iPad Mini retina are simply kick ass and they dont need any improvement other than 2gb RAM. Other than that, I see no reason to upgrade from the existing models.

I'll be curious if the new iPads with run a more powerful variant of the A8 (A8X?) to better handle the supposed split-screen multitasking and rumored 12.9" iPad.

Cpu not needed, just RAM

----------

No way is Apple going to hold a keynote to update the Air with A8 and Touch ID. So either there's some updates coming to Macs/Apple TV or we're not getting another keynote this year.

Woo woo
I had the exact same thought

The $99 Playstation TV US launch today made me a little sad they beat Apple to the punch.

You obviously haven't installed IOS8 because you wouldn't be saying the Air is kickass, mine has slowed down considerably.

The 2GB ram will improve things, but a boost to the GPU will help as well.

I'm getting one!

Why? Because my ipad (the original version 1) is slower than fat chicks on treadmills. This should be quite the upgrade.

We'll get them to make one for you with the old CPU, I'll take the new one thanks.

If they can put at least 1.5 GB RAM and cut the weight by 15% with the same battery life, and add Touch ID, that would honestly be a pretty decent upgrade, although still doubtful I'd upgrade from the current Air. It doesn't have to be a lot faster, honestly.

Then the "killer app" would be true multi-user capability, with everything (iCloud, Game Center, installed apps, etc.) switching over triggered by Touch ID.

• They can show off Yosemite and announce a launch date
• Can reveal iOS 8.1 that may gain some new features that the iPad can take advantage of
• Announcement of the new MacBook Air
• Announcement of Retina iMac

Just a few ideas. It would probably be a small event

I doubt there will be an October event. Apple will release the Air 2 in October (probably on Oct 21st) without an event.

I think the analysts are basically stuffed now, because none of them could state for sure if Apple was going to announce the Apple Watch, so I think with Apple doing so so far ahead of it's launch, the analysts are lost with their predictions.

Well done Apple I say.

People are hoping the new ipads have more ram than the iphones but that really hasn't happened in the past. :[

I love you guys, but sometimes I get a little irritated by the false entitlement. Sure some of us in these forums may be engineers, marketing pros and the like, but Apple is a 34 year old company with obvious expertise in designing upgrade cycles to balance performance, bulk component price & user experience.

I don't think Apple is doomed if they only provide 1 GB of RAM. I'd like it, but it probably wouldn't lessen the experience of a faster, lighter iPad with TouchID so I don't have to use my password to see my job's Exchange mail.

TL;DR I trust Apple more than some of us fanboys to design the iPad upgrades.

iPod touch 6 please

I also hope they are planning to announce cool replacements to the iPod line.

If this is true, looks like the rMini will be the first victim of the iPhone 6+. ...snip
Not yet.

Millions and millions of people will buy an iPhone 6.

These will be your potential iPad mini people.

iPhone 6 is a minuscule size increase (should of been 5" )

iPad mini is now big with Execs in Corp 500 America.

iPad Air has suddenly become "to big" for them. :roll eyes: ;)

You've been drinking too much Apple Juice, Apple said for years that 3.5" was the best, then 4" was the best, now 4.7 and 5.5" is the best. They said glass was the best, then Aluminium was the best, now plastic is the best.

Do those things sound like a company which knows what it's doing, sounds more like a company scared of falling behind.

Safari crashes on my iPad Air all the time, it's because there isn't enough ram, period, you tell me why Apple knows best.

From the time I start Safari on my iPad, there is virtually no ram for anything else. I know they get around this, but it's time to catch up with everyone else.
