What's next apple?
At least be honest.

Curious if the new cover will work on the Air/Air2? the website says iPad Pro only but that could be more marketing BS.

So coming from an iPad 3, to get the same type of coverage I would have with the smart case... I need the silicon backcover, and then the smart cover or the smart keyboard addon?

Don't get me wrong, I love my iPad, but all of the accessories would be more than 50% of the cost of the device itself. It makes Apple feel more like a car dealership.
And just wait...in a few more years they WILL be a car dealership. Hahaha

how long do you think is it gonna take for cases to pop up on ebay by third parties? i really dont want to shell out close to 100GBP for the whole shebang.

I wish AirDrop was a little more reliable.

I always used to hate it as it never worked for me either at all or reliably. However since i've fixed double NAT on my home network it works perfectly every time. If thats not a problem for you could always try Instashare, I used that before Airdrop even came out and for the two years Airdrop never worked properly for me, it just works over wifi with no bluetooth required and its instant and fast. I still use it occasionally as its the quickest way to share your clipboard between OS X and iOS.

Actually, the Air2 didn't have a 32GB option, but rather a 64GB option. So if you really want to get technical with it, you're losing half the storage for the same price.

Read my post again, I said iPad Air. Not iPad Air2.

Although I was wrong with the 128GB option. Apparently I had a math fail.

They've also removed the smart case option and instead want you to buy both the smart cover $ and the silicon case $ for full coverage. $$$

If you try not to do it this way and only buy the silicon case then you end up with a naked left edge. Fair enough asking to pay for new accessories but new accessories that are severely limiting is nonsense.

No leather options as yet for the Pro 9.7.

I recently got an Apple silicone case for my iPhone 6S and I like it a lot more than the leather case it replaced. I'll probably get a silicone case and silicone smart cover for the Pro 9.7 I just ordered. I'll probably also get the smart keyboard for travel. And what the heck, throw in the pencil as well!! :)

True, although I think it's more relevant to compare it to the latest previous model instead of the 2.5 year ago one. iPad Air $600 got you 32GB. iPad Air 2 $600 got you 64GB. iPad Pro $600 gets you 32GB. Some might see that as going backwards.

Though to be honest, I don't really care what way we slice it because I've never bought an iPad before and still can't compel myself to get one.

Not recommended, but an iPhone 6s case u can only get now with an iPhone 6 IS recommended.... I'm trying to see how i can untangle that.

Apple and their strange ways.... using the aliment of magnets to overcome reasons for just about anything..

Next, they'll use the term, as to why the earth has moved out of its orbit *rolls eyes*

While Sept 2017 is technically next year, it'll be interesting to see if iPads are now on a 1.5 yr cycle. Or even longer.

I sometimes wonder if it makes more sense for Apple to release iPads in March the following year. Else, you are simply flooding the market with too many products within too short a period of time. A consumer might baulk at the idea of purchasing both an iPhone and an iPad within the same month leading up to Christmas, but might be more open to the idea of picking up an iPhone in November and an iPad in March because it means spreading out his purchases over a wider period of time.

This also means that by the time the iPad rolls out, demand for the iPhone would have fallen, which might in turn mean more high-end components available for other products. The iPad is supposed to be the PC replacement, but it's the iPhone which gets all the best stuff because that's the key money maker for Apple.

For instance, I assume one of the reasons for the iPad Mini 4 getting the A8 processor is because all the A9 chips got reserved for the iPhone 6S, and because Apple had a whole bunch of excess capacity for the A8 chip. Yet the iPad has more pixels, and I am more likely to edit videos and photos on my iPad over my iPhone.

I agree.
What I would like to see.

March - iPad
May - Apple Watch& TV
July - Laptops & Towers
Sept - iPhone & iPod

So?! Anyone out there that had an old Smart Cover and has bought the new iPad Pro9.7 who can tell us how they work together!? :)

It's now $120 to get a plastic cover and back for the Apple iPad Pro. The old smart case which was nice leather was what $69-79? People need to vote with their wallets on this. It's ridiculous.

iPad Pro AppleCare is what $99? Incident fee is $49

So you can use your iPad naked for two years. Cover all the buttons as well as protect from damage. For $30 more and at he end go in and get a like new iPad replacement.

The one thing which surprises me is that I haven't see Smart Cover 1:1 clowns it if China. They seem stuck in the old iPad 2 mode with the metal side.

For me. I have a brand new Smart Cover. I have to unlock my iPad with fingerprint anyway. So I don't really see much of an issue using the smart cover from the air 2 so long as it holds shut.

I can't believe the pricing of the cases now. It's disgusting. As a shareholder I hope s ton of people buy them. But for many people a case is part of the purchase. $120 for plastic is amazing.

I'm shocked anyone buys hide. The leather covers were the same price for all intents and purposes

Well, I just tried it. Definitely seems like not only do they not recommend it, but the magnets are reversed so it even causes the old smart cover to stay lifted!

yep

Exactly the same for the iPad Air 2 Leather Smart Case

There goes my hopes of just cutting extra holes in the leather for the speakers and flash.

So now have to wait for a decent 3rd party leather case:(

there will inevitably be a *-gate name for this by some.

can I propose "Semi-On"-gate? :D

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro and the iPad Air 2 are the exact same size and thickness, measuring in at 9.4 inches by 6.6 inches by 0.24 inches (6.1mm), but Apple accessories designed for the iPad Air 2, such as the Smart Cover and the Smart Case, are not fully compatible with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

With the launch of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple also released a line of Smart Covers specific to the new device, which are being sold alongside Smart Covers for the iPad Air and the iPad Air 2. Given that many people may already own an iPad Air Smart Cover, there was some question as to whether it would fit on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

Because of the Smart Connector on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, the magnet alignment in the Smart Cover is different, something an Apple representative confirmed to Macworld. For that reason, using the iPad Air Smart Cover with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is "not recommended."

As for the Smart Case designed for the iPad Air 2, while it may fit, it isn't designed for the Smart Connector, the rear flash, or the four speakers on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, making it technically incompatible.

With Apple's own iPad Air accessories ill-suited for the new iPad Pro, it stands to reason other third-party cases and covers designed for the iPad Air and iPad Air 2 are also not going to work with the 9.7-inch tablet, requiring adopters to purchase new accessories.

I am not complaining about the $$, but I wan't the exact same type of front/back Apple cover I have for the iPad Air 2 - and they aren't offering it: you would need to separate covers, which just seems to me to be a bad, unsafe idea: I constantly carry, read my iPad while standing on the very crowded subway. The existing Apple front & back case offers excellent protection: I have dropped it any number of times at home and all over town, without any damage - and having the cover absolutely guarantees I can hang on to it when people bum into me on the subway.

I absolutely don't want to lose that protection for an over $1K iPad Pro. I realize that 3rd party versions will soon appear, but they are almost guaranteed to be heavier. I'm puzzled as to why Apple decided to get rid of their safest travel/home version of the both side cover.

I just got the Apple iPad Pro smart cover for my iPad Pro 9.7 and I am very disappointed. The Apple smart cover does not fit well. The cover has been cut too large for the iPad and sticks out on one side (the side that opens) with a mildly sharp edge. This protrusion makes the cover uncomfortable to hold when open and prone to false-opens when closed. It fits like a cheap knock off instead of a true Apple product. What is going on Apple? Apple had to know these covers fit poorly. Shame on you. Apple needs to make a cover that fits as well as the cover for the iPad Air 2 (which I also have).
