It's time I got a new Tablet.

iPad Air 2, or perhaps some other nice model from elsewhere.

Naturally I'll wait now as things are so close, but you know what...... I'm really expecting this year's iPad revamp is going to be the dullest ever in iPad history.

No leaked parts, new case designs etc. I'm expecting the exact same case.

I'm not expecting any new size options.

All I can think of is:

25% ish faster in some things due to A8 CPU/GPU speed tweak.
Touch iD
Perhaps if we are lucky a little better camera, though probably not even up to last years iPhone quality.
Perhaps some different memory option size.

And, to be honest, that's it.

Lucky to stretch that out to more than 5 mins and move onto something else they wish to show off

Is there any chance I'm wrong, and I'm going to be surprised?

The new iPad Air 2 will have one feature that no iPad has ever had. The so called killer feature. I predict it will be hardware, not in terms of a new app.

You just have to wait. Can you wait? Or can we leave these threads for after it actually comes out?

I look forward to it, but please don't say Touch ID as we all know that's coming.

There's a few more things coming I think such as:

-Improved anti-reflection coating on the screen
-Laminated Screen
-Thinner profile
-Possible 2GB Ram on iPad Air
-Split screen mode on iPad Air
-haptic screen technology (just kidding)

https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ipad/

split screen would be the one I would say no likely to happen. Apple could have added it ages ago and hasn't and frankly i don't see a common user case for it no matter how much the geeks shout for it.

Slightly thinner perhaps. anti glare and better backlight hopefully. 2GB of RAM I'm thinking unlikely but maybe. The display tech from the watch would be nice. give us a little pressure sensitivity and with it hopefully some smaller touch points for better handwriting (which can be useful for businesses taking payments, signing paperwork and for students taking notes)

a given would be 802.11ac

So having a document opened at the same time that you're typing isn't useful?

useful for some perhaps. But I said the common user. 95% of folks aren't going to be typing emails while trying to watch a movie or some such. And Apple is more about what is useful and needed for that group than the noisy horde on sites like this who make up the 5%.

How do you know what the common user wants? Let me see your research.

Seems to me people want to do most things on their iPads nowadays. Multi window would be very useful.

When they do it you'll be talking about how awesome it is.

Since there's no desktop it would give you the ability to copy something from one place to another without having to switch back and force. The technology to support variable resolutions in iOS is new to iOS 8 which is needed for this functionality. I think this is an essential feature to make iPad's more productive. Saying that it still might not be rolled out with the new iPad's.

There is nothing wrong with wanting more.

I like the iPad, never had any issue, other than Safari crashes all the time now on any heavy web page.

I just look at my iPad1. Look at the iPad Air in the store, and sigh, that after 5 years it's the same dam thing.

Nothing fundamentally is any different

Hell even it is have nice stereo front facing speakers I'd jump for joy as it's a real change and I'd buy one, but I'd buy an air now, and feel I've just got the same thing really
If you don't see any fundamental between an iPad 1 and an iPad Air there is nothing to discuss here. They are as alike as 1970 Corvette and a Gen. 7 Corvette.

I've got an iPad 3 and have had constant wifi issues since day 1. Looking forward to upgrading.

the iPad 3 was one giant issue and should have never existed at all

i went through a total of (4) iPad 3's

#1 - light bleed and yellow screen
#2 - light bleed and yellow screen
#3 - yellow screen
#4 - light bleed and yellow screen

i kept my iPad 2, then jumped to the iPad 4. then jumped to an iPad Mini Retina

You're right. They're exactly the same thing. Nothing has changed fundamentally at all

Maybe you mean they both have icons and a screen.

You should get this one. It was designed by Ashton Kutcher and everything

Its got a handle on it.

i really don't know what you consider fundamental. it's a tablet...it has a large multi-touch screen that you perform gestures on to execute different functions in the operating system. how much more fundamental do you want it to get?

you honestly cannot sit there and say the iPad 1 and an iPad Air are the "same dam thing" as you just said above. you are overlooking quite a lot:

- retina screen
- thickness
- weight
- battery life
- processing power
- graphics power
- front camera, HD
- rear camera, HD
- dual microphones
- dual speakers
- auto sleep/wake
- higher storage options (128GB)

now granted many of these features were rationed over the years and could have existed a while ago. but that's a topic for another discussion

Don't feed it. I can't say the "t" word because I was banned for saying it once.

I completely agree with the criticism expressed in this thread. The device has not evolved, just boosted in specs with an occasional design tweak.

They really need to put some time into expanding iOS for the iPad. 5 years later, we should have more than a large version of the iPhone. I'd go as far as saying that they've put more effort into making iOS better for the iPhone 6+'s large screen than they have for the iPad. Why can the iPhone 6 have more rows of icons than an iPad? Why does the iPhone 6+ get a great new landscape mode for it's home screen and the iPad doesn't? Why are so many element of iOS still sized for an iPhone (drop down lists, passcode buttons, etc...)

The iPad has so much more potential than just being a handheld web browser/casual gaming device, if only Apple would devote some resources to it.

I think the new iPads will get / need a resolution boost or have the ability to zoom out and display more (like the phone 6). Right now my iPhone 6 plus shows more content than my iPad air on safari.

Just out of curiosity, what is the probability that the new ipad will have a better handwriting functionality for note taking?

I would say, it's mainly about the Apps, as they are what we use to do things on the iPads (and other iDevices). The OS is mostly just a platform for these Apps to run on, with Apple providing the hardware as well as APIs.

The main interface we see (the home screen) is also just a place to get into the Apps, so I guess that's why it remained basic but functional — the complex stuff is underneath, and in the Apps.

Sure, Apps aren't everything. They are limited by how much the OS allows it to do, or what the hardware is capable of, and I don't deny there is still so much potential on the platform. Nevertheless, I think the apps we get these days have advanced quite a bit from the original iPad.

I agree. Apple does seem to be focused on letting the iPad experience be driven by the apps. The iPad exclusive apps are the major differentiating factor between it and the iPhone. The 6 Plus can't run tablet apps.

Also I can understand wanting some new features on the iPad but claiming there is no fundamental change between the iPad 1 and iPad Air it totally asinine. There's valid criticism and then there's just outright silliness. That's like claiming there's no difference between the iPhone 1st Gen and 6 because it's still rectangular shaped with rows of icons. It's a tablet. Do people also expect Apple to radically redesign the look of computers such as the Macbook every year too?

What ratio would you prefer? I think 4:3 is one of the best features of the iPad's but I'm a portrait guy.

Absolutely correct. I cannot stand widescreen tablets. They are funky to hold in landscape mode and just don't feel right. The only benefit is that anamorphic movies don't have bars but that's hardly enough reason for them to switch.

4:3 is the proper aspect ratio for a tablet. Period.

I'm getting rid of my ipad 4. It's served me well and made me buck the trend of updating my ipad every year which shows how good it was, but it's starting to feel a little slow now.

All i'd like is a bit of a speed boost and more ram. Don't need the fingerprint sensor like on my 5s really as the ipad doesn't go out to places where anyone could access it/i might lose it.

If they do add a fingerprint sensor, maybe they could also add user accounts so if say my daughter unlocked it, only her games would show up.

TouchID that let you switch between multiple user account by touching the home button with your finger. Perfect for an iPad shared by a family
Please Apple!!!

I switched from my old iPad 2/32GB to an iPad Air/64GB last year and I was surprised how similiar these two devices are.

The only real difference was weight (the Air is much more comfortable to watch movies in bed) and a really disappointing browsing experience with reloading tabs and frequent Safari crashes.

Because the iPhone 6 Plus just came out and the new iPad hasn't yet.

Saying that an iPad 1 and an iPad Air are the same is a little much though. The iPad has radically changed and improved over the years.

Your beef is with iOS for iPad. We can't criticize yet, let alone compare it to an iPhone that came out a couple of days ago. The new iPads aren't even here yet. We have no clue what they've done to iPad.

You can criticize in November if you see that they haven't changed it at all.
