Well thanks for the info. I guess it's going back. I will run the test anyway but no way am I keeping a device with faulty components. I lived thru the Nvidia GPU fiasco awhile back.

They are not actually faulty parts but slower. Was hoping this fiasco was only on the iPhones.

I think you people just enjoy worrying about something.

Enjoy!

Wish I could see it that way. Instead to be happy to have the newest ipad I'm testing how many seconds it's slower or faster. But I don't pay almost 1k on a device to have lesser quality components in the end.

----------

I have iPad Air 2 64gb wifi that uses MLC

When did you buy yours? Just recent?

About 3 weeks ago in the uk.

Yeah I can't vouch for iPad air2 with 64GB, but I don't see why not?

statistically its probably just a lot less likely to be found, just like MLC on 6+

So maybe there is more room in the non cellular version to install mlc. Does anyone have a 64GB cellular to test?

Would be very cool if the people with the iPad Air 2 with 64gb and cellular could test if they have MLC OR TLC.

The old ipad air is faster while transferring big files. I tested it myself.

yup in transferring 1.7gb files.
how often do you do that?
and how often do you sit down and wait for the files to transfer across, with a timer on on hand?

those 10 second delays dont add up to a substantial amount of time.

Do you think I'm overreacting? My girlfriend says I'm crazy :)

They will make the switch over to either a different TLC Nand or back to MLC. The questions are:

1) How many 128GB iDevices did Apple mfg?

2) When will the new Nand iDevices enter production?

3) Will they honor the design flaw and swap those devices in question?

The existence of TLC in the Air 2, and even its slightly slower performance, is not a design flaw. That's simply how it was designed. The small performance hit (offset by the faster processor) is likely an intentional trade off against both price and space saving.

Unless it's actually malfunctioning in some way, I don't see what reason you'd have to get apple to swap it really.

Why would you be overreacting when Apple stopped using TLC Nand because of reported issues? If a big company reacts to issues by deciding not to use certain components because of potential issues then it's a problem.

Aren't some of the respring's and reboots and app crashes users are experiencing related to TLC? There was a big thread started here on MR related to issues with TLC apart from speed issues.

That is my standpoint. Apple says the new ipad air 2 is faster and bla bla bla. But in the end only the cpu and gpu are better, the nand is last class :(

SOME.
SOME...and unconfirmed.

Please look into the science behind TLC vs. MLC and you'll see how ridiculous it is to care this much about it on a device that will probably be obsolete in 3-4 years max.

a good reading source would be Anandtech - read their article on the 840 EVO - a TLC NAND drive that was released last year.

I checked all sources on TLC VS MLC OR SLC
Maybe your right. I will try to be happy that I have it and be OK. My ipad air 1 is 128 pure MLC :)

Yeah it's SO UNCONFIRMED Apple pulled the plug on TLC NAND.

Apple will switch from using TLC (triple-level cell) NAND flash to MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus after users have experienced crashing and boot loop issues with the higher capacity versions of both devices, reports BusinessKorea.

We will see what future ipads will have. Let's say INSHALLAH.

unconfirmed that the issue arises from the TLC nand itself..
could be a controller issue, driver issue, trim issue....
whole host of things - doubt it's from overwriting TLD nand
