Why did Apple ever make the quote "most forward thinking Iphone" for the iPhone 5s but no mention anything for this?
In retrospect, 'forward thinking' didn't mean that the 5S itself will have long longevity, though I'm sure it will stand up well for 3-4 years as most iPhones do. What they meant is they were actually thinking about the 6 while they were making the 5S- hence the experiment with touch ID that led to Apple Pay, the jump to 64 bit, and so on.

I wonder if the extra 2 cores are active? Wouldn't people have noticed them in performance tests on the A8X? Maybe for the Ipad pro, would make sense?

We know Apple can kill it with hardware. It's software where they need to step up.

My vote goes to the original iPad 2.

I bought mine the day they were released, more than 3 1/2 years ago. Still runs the latest iOS and most software brilliantly, and with great battery life.

agree though i haven't tried iOS8 on it and i may not. but i have to admit, the screen res is starting to bug me - a new iPad would probably aid me in straying from my rMbp and 5S from time to time. if i watch netflix i'll choose the retina screen every time. and i prefer writing emails on my phone simply because of the font aliasing on the iPad2. looking nasty to me lately

If you have a problem with the lack of innovation in desktop CPUs you need to whine about Intel, not Apple. Apple is stuck with what they get and other features, such as retina screen on the MBA, depend on Intel's offerings.

I was thinking more in terms of the age old complaint that Apple underspecs for the price on the lower end.

In fact, Apple were still selling the iPad 2 up until earlier this year.

Yet it misses a lot of the new stuff. No AirDrop. No continuity. No Retina display. No fancy translucent graphics (except in some areas, oddly). No Apple Pay. No Touch ID. It's quite heavy too with though thick bezels (not really lol, but its funny to say)

My cousins still use iPad 2s but thats because they don't have to money to upgrade them yet.

for all the people who want to use the apple ecosystem for the iTunes store, some video chat & email, and don't play top tier games off steam? no doubt. it's still a computer that will last them for at least 3 years until they feel they have to shell out another grand for a base-level replacement again. going for a $600-$700 alternative doesn't even enter into their heads if they prefer an apple machine with all its perks. 'overpriced' just doesn't really square with me when talking about Apple. buying a hummer or something, maybe.. beats headphones, definitely.

Enough already with this. I just bankrupted the family with the retina iMac, I cannot upgrade my iPad Air too. Damn you Apple.

I'd settle for multi-user support on the iPad. It'd be so simple and elegant to do this with Touch ID ...

That is the very last thing iPad needs! In fact this is an example of a comment that really needs a down vote option.

More cores allows Apple to keep the clock rates down. This means more performance for a given watt. I would not be surprised at all to find out that they have a lot of clock rate head room for the GPU. Keep the clock low and the chip runs cool.

And people say Apples device hardware is outdated...

It's stale

Apple has done nothing new with iPads

Customers are speaking the same with their wallets

The fact is an iPhone with a larger screen will satisfy most users.

Ipad sales continue to fall and Apple has done very little in innovation with their iPad line.

In fact their line is so confusing. It appears they're giving up on the iPad mini and offering 16 gb is going to be an issue in the future of ios upgrades

Or holds specs back because they're afraid of competing with their own products i.e. 2014 Mac Mini etc...
It is pretty foolish to believe that. Apple simply delivered a Mini with far better GPU performance which is certainly of interest to most Mini users. It might not have np been the design decision you wanted made but it is a sound decision consider the market the Mini sells into.

But, you must have this! Look at how fast and new it is, and how great it would look next to the retina iMac! Quick! Go get another credit card! You can't fall behind the tech curve! LOL

Don't know what you're smoking? Looking for a hologram?

The sole reason for the iPad 2's long life was because of the 30-pin dock connector that many enterprises and educational institutions had invested big money in. It wasn't really that great of a device as it was only adequately powered and missing the most important iPad feature - a retina screen. If anything, the long life of the iPad 2 has held back iOS development.

That is the very last thing iPad needs! In fact this is an example of a comment that really needs a down vote option.

Why? This is the perfect example of a feature that you could just not use if you don't want it. For many of us it would be huge. It would allow a kids mode with limited apps and permissions (currently they can delete anything they want - apps, pictures, etc). The iPad is the perfect device for sharing, but it always has intensely personal information a touch away. My kid's iPad stays at home, but if I'm not careful every iOS update resets iMessage so all my text messages get delivered to that device where they and the babysitters can see them. Multi-user is needed BADLY!

What rock are you hiding under?!

Many of us still rock our old iPads

We're going to use our old iPads until they die.

I'd say that's a great testament that we don't care for a few cores lol

Depends what you use it for. If you play high intensity game, or do video, image or music processing. The new Ipad is a definite massive improvement.

Even for reading and looking a pictures, the new one, especially if you have a Ipad 2, is a massive improvement. The screen is much more precise, have a better contrast, better color reproduction, less reflection, better angles. So, even for mondane tasks, the new ones are significantly better; maybe not better enough to upgrade to Air2, but even a Ipad 4 would be an upgrade if its just for reading (and you can get some cheap these days).
