Cool to see more GPU horsepower under the hood.

I'm still however intrigued by the asymmetric 3 core CPU design. Could one of the CPU cores be prioritized for certain roles such as system tasks I wonder? Since user space and system/kernel space tasks might have relatively different memory access patterns, would you be able able to set the processor affinity of system tasks to prioritize the 3rd asymmetric core, thereby retaining system responsiveness under high loads and preventing the tasks from trampling on each others L1/2 space under some conditions?

Best hardware + Tight software-hardware integration = WINNING COMBINATION.

Most so called benchmark don't really test real word usage So, your not going to get an answer from those things. But, this Ipad is a beast no matter how you look at it.

"Semi-Custom"? Isn't something either stock or custom?

I'm guessing semi-custom means some parts are stock and some parts are custom. More like a systems integration job with some parts built to integrate the stock parts. Most of the design is PowerVR, so calling it custom would be a misnomer.

Off all the Apple upgrades I've made (including every iPad iteration), the Air 2 was the only one where I could tell I had a lot more power within just a few minutes of use.

Even moving back to our mini (A7) is a very noticeable decline in speed, fluidity and app loading time.

If you're on the fence, please do give one a try in-store.

Yet it misses a lot of the new stuff. No AirDrop. No continuity. No Retina display. No fancy translucent graphics (except in some areas, oddly). No Apple Pay. No Touch ID. It's quite heavy too with though thick bezels (not really lol, but its funny to say)

My cousins still use iPad 2s but thats because they don't have to money to upgrade them yet.

It's the only tablet released in 2011 that is still usable and supported of any brand. It's actually pretty amazing that it's still around considering how Apple "slows down old devices when new ones come out".

on iPhone, yes.
which is silly given that Apple is now a phone company first, and computer company second (based on revenues and profit).

You mean that tiny hand held computer that barely anyone actually talks on is a phone? who knew... :p

On my iPad Air 2, both Monopoly and Battleship have their graphics messed up. While the power and speed are great, it would be nice if EA and Hasbro fixed them.

That is a bug built into iOS. Your issue with Monopoly will be resolved when they include an Apple Store in the game. Bonus points if they add a SpaceShip Campus in 2016.

We know Apple can kill it with hardware. It's software where they need to step up.

Apple may need to step up their software according to Apple standard in hardware , not to be on park with other software because Apple software work a lot better and less bugs than any software out there, except for a couple of recent releases.

Depends what you use it for. If you play high intensity game, or do video, image or music processing. The new Ipad is a definite massive improvement.

Even for reading and looking a pictures, the new one, especially if you have a Ipad 2, is a massive improvement. The screen is much more precise, have a better contrast, better color reproduction, less reflection, better angles. So, even for mondane tasks, the new ones are significantly better; maybe not better enough to upgrade to Air2, but even a Ipad 4 would be an upgrade if its just for reading (and you can get some cheap these days).

I'm not disagreeing there but then again aren't all these capabilities with the chipsets are creating fragmentation when most people aren't updating their iPads.

The iPad 3 is good enough and the iPad one is good enough

The iPad Air isn't compelling enough and the numbers prove it.

I wonder if the extra 2 cores are active? Wouldn't people have noticed them in performance tests on the A8X? Maybe for the Ipad pro, would make sense?

I think Anandtech did notice, they posted fill rate tests where it was essentially double that of the A8. (in their subsequent A8x analysis yesterday, not in the main iPad Air 2 review).

LOL, yeah Apple did sort of "kill" the iPad Mini and Mac Mini. Software isn't going to fix either of those, though.

My vote goes to the original iPad 2.

I bought mine the day they were released, more than 3 1/2 years ago. Still runs the latest iOS and most software brilliantly, and with great battery life.

In fact, Apple were still selling the iPad 2 up until earlier this year.

Bingo. Just 512MB of Ram too. The RAM thugs must be flipping their lids over such a travesty. You mean the device actually works good with such minuscule amounts of RAM? Can't be.

But yes, the ipad 2 is easily the longevity model. The Air 2 is a good start but it'll get bumped by the Air 3 next year. They'll also correct the vibration problem and the screen distortion problems. ;). Then I'll buy one.

neat...

Now that's a computer :D

8 frekin cores in a phone.....

what will we all do with that i wonder...
