Huzzah, hyperbole. More like:
- Many of us being vocal have been using styluses of various kinds from third parties for years, and not just for graphics.
- Apple releases one that does it right. We go "finally!"... until we are told we must have the Pro or can't use it.
- A spec bump over the Air 2 may not be good enough to open our wallets, but actually addressing a use case we've been trying to make work in some form or another for years just might.

If Apple does bring Pencil support to the Air, they get my money. If not, I'll just wait until they offer something that is worth upgrading to. The Air 2 is not a bad model to hold onto for a few years.

Personally I think you will be in luck.
I can't imagine the pencil not being available on new iPads of ANY size.
It is a no cost feature that would give users something else to buy I.e. A pencil.

Doesn't everyone who want an iPad and iPhone already have one by now. These are not devices that are really worth upgrading every year - considering their mediocre improvements each cycle. I've jumped off the bandwagon. My 128 GB iPad Air still works and after I broke my iPhone 6, they upgraded to the 6s. So I think I'm good for the next 3 or 4 yrs. The only thing that would get me to upgrade would be radically improved battery life and cameras, otherwise I think Apple is going to be a victim of their own success soon.

i thought about waiting for the air 3 instead of getting the ipp. I am so happy with he pro though i can't see going back to that smaller screen that my air 2 has regardless of the spec bump.

why would anyone buy an apple band? I got a 3rd party stainless Milanese loop band in silver and in blue for $17 each. Apple's is what? $140?

So what's the event invite tagline going to be? "We have a little something new to share with you?"

More like " Nothing to see here folks, move along" ...sorry I couldn't help myself.

ETA: I am waiting to see what the iphone 5se has to offer.

Nothing really interesting here but I do hope this 4" iPhone is good enough to satisfy the small group of people who still like the smaller devices. I would hope that they would make it equal to the specs of the 6S but I doubt it.

Apple may be a victim of their own success. The 6S+ is so good and powerful that I think I may keep it for 2+ years now and skip the 7. I don't think this iPhone 5se will sell enough to prevent the YoY decline of iPhone sales that has been predicted for this quarter.

The die heart iPhone users that help Apple create it's brand and prosperity; Apple is risking their fanboy loyalty with the new 4" iPhone. Apple will either reward them with a cutting edge 4" new iPhone or betray them with a "budget" 4" iPhone that will have a 3 year old 8MP camera and 8 year old LPDDR3 inside it! A8 or A9 or A10?

Everybody makes the same mistake. It won' t help iPhones sales in q2, because it will be sold at the end of q2/start q3.

My predictions for the rumored March event:

iPad Air 3
  • 9.7" 1536x2048 display
  • Pencil support
  • A9 SoC, CPU clock > 1.85 GHz
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 4 speakers
  • Smart Connector
  • 32 GB, 128 GB
iPhone 5se
  • 4.0" 640x1136 display
  • A8 SoC or an A9 SoC with a CPU clock < 1.85 GHz
  • 16 GB, 64 GB
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 8 MP camera
Apple Watch
  • New bands
iOS
  • iOS 9.3 demo
I make no predictions on other things at this time.
Keep on dreaming.

I think it wil be:

-no pencil support.
-2 or 3gb ram
-2732x2048 res, same as ipad pro. Ipad pro 2 will have 3072x2304 res.
-1,85 ghz clocked a9x or 2+ghz clocked a9.
-smart connector
-4 speakers

Keep on dreaming.

Why? Some of those predictions seem reasonable. Would you care to predict?

That sounds reasonable, no A9X.

Not interested.... I actually switched back to my 64GB 5s and just will keep the 6 for dev/testing - only took a bit of cleaning to get back under 64 GB.
Funny part is that restoring the 5s from the 6 backup freed up 10 GB of space - plenty of headroom now...

I'm really liking the smaller size. The 6 was too big and I really hated locking the phone when I was trying to adjust the volume.

The round corners on the >=6 just make the mute switch easier to snag on *everything* - I was missing a lot of calls. This was probably by design - I imagine Jony Ive hates when people call him so his real intent was to design an always/auto mute switch feature.

Sorry, but i think that is subjective. I never accidentally pushed the mute switch. And about accidentally locking the phone when adjusting volume, that is just because you are not used to this button layout. Or you don' t want to get used to it.
You just don' t like the size of the iphone 6, that is it. May i ask why you have bought one?

What do you think about pricing for the new 4"?

Right now Apple want (local prices in sweden):

≈$555 for the 2,5 y/o 32GB 5s ($423 not applestore)
≈$700 for the 1,5 y/o 64GB 6 ($640 not applestore)
≈$810 for the 0,5 y/o 64GB 6s ($750 not applestore)

When the new 4" hit the stores the iPhone 7 will be 5 months away..

So, it´s probably old tech looking at being really old tech in just 5 months..

Because of it´s timing, discounts available on older (better?) models and the short time before the new generation comes out, this basically must be a complete steal to make sense to anyone looking for a new phone..

Can we hope for 64GB @ the price of todays 32GB iPhone 5s? :)

I used the 6 for a year, but never liked it - I'm an iOS dev, so it was a business decision to support the screen size.

My complaint is that they eliminated refreshes of the 4" form factor on the cadence of larger models and current specs (not 6 months behind)

If they are smart, they will bring the 4" back in cadence with the top spec tier. If they gimp the 4" form factor, I won't buy another iPhone until I absolutely have to... or just switch platforms... I'm ramping up on Android ports for my apps that make sense in that market (as all the other iOS devs I know are). As much as I think Android sucks from a dev perspective, Apple is sinking to that level anyway. And besides, we've reached peak mobile as far as apps are concerned, so it doesn't really matter anymore....

Edit:

Also, the lock button on the side IS a human factors bug because your hand grips the sides of the device during normal use - this is as stupid as a kill switch and steering wheel lock button placed on the outer rim of the steering wheel in your car. What would happen if you shut off your car and locked the steering wheel during a quick left turn in heavy traffic???

for fun see:
I love looping the moment of impact in this video...

Putting the 6 in a case mitigates the mute button catching on *everything*, but I don't use a case because the phone is too big. I see a lot of dolts with flashy huge bling iPhone cases that match their fancy man purses - but I'm not that guy...

Definitely wanting to update my 5S, but last year's leftovers aren't going to cut it. There had better be a 4" version of the iPhone 7 this fall, or I'm holding out for another year. Get it through your thick head Tim, there's plenty of people who want a flagship phone that isn't phablet sized.
Isn't the iPhone 6 one of the best selling iPhone's of all time? I doubt those that want a "flagship" 4" phone matter enough to their bottom line to push one through..... I think you folks think more of yourselves than apple does.

That's the reason people says Apple cant innovate anymore. Like earlier days they are not interested in stepping into future technology. They are more interested in making cheaper products, pack old things in new packet to get more sales and gain money with bigger market share
Calm down.... this isn't the "new" iphone.

The pencil is the dumbest product Apple has released in recent memory. It's an overpriced and glorified stylus which Steve Jobs would never have approved of.

Products like the pencil have started to turn Apple into a complete joke.
Oh please tell us more of what you know about the inner thinking of Steve Jobs...... You and those that presume to know what Steve would and wouldn't do make me laugh... how do you get those egos through the door?

the only way Steve Jobs' most misaligned quotes will wane from existing on Every Apple Article Ever Written is if we stop giving them an iota of attention. they're like trolls unaware of their own trolling.

The iPhone 6S and 6S+ are monsters; what more could you want from a phone? The 6S+ is definitely the best phone Apple has made, and I don't see what they can improve upon significantly come September.

While I agree that Apple is getting diminishing returns with the phone hardware, there is still a lot they can do on the software side to innovate.

The iPad could still have a huge amount of growth once the technology catches up in about two years.

The Notebooks are also a place Apple could see bigger growth in, particularly with Kaby Lake's GPU performance and Cannonlake's improved CPU and die shrink, but they're stuck waiting on Intel for now. But Windows X's advancements and Apple's less-than-impressive upgrades to OSX is concerning.

The Apple Watch is still a while always from being a must have device, if it ever will at all. The Apple TV is also not quite there yet, but getting closer. Apple Music is certainly exciting, but not enough of a revenue stream to excite investors.

Umm let's see...

Fast charging
Fast wireless charging
Front facing speakers
Phone gestures like moto phones (double chop for flashlight and swivel for camera)
Front facing flash camera
Quick glance (waving hand over phone to get quick information)

So, you want it to be a POS Android phone?

While all of those things may be nice to have, none of them would get me to rush out and buy a new phone. Any new charging technology will just get better in the next generation as the new technology matures and the others you mention really wouldn't be that interesting to me either....they're just more 3D Touch like features...you try them a few times and then forget you have them. Of course I always say I'm going to skip a generation and wait, but somehow I don't end up doing it. It's just getting harder to imagine what the next must have feature will be.

Doesn't everyone who want an iPad and iPhone already have one by now.

Well no - not at the prices Apple charges in markets where it is customary to buy your own phone and connectivity is often a separate purchase.

Apple has probably topped out on high end market share. However their prices are so steep that there is plenty of customers in the level below that. Challenge is reaching those customers without all the others switching to the cheaper product.

Bear in mind that at this point, really a low to mid range Windows phone is more than most people need. So its gonna be difficult for Apple to make any succesfull segmentation that does not pull the rug out from under their margins.
