This was my thought at first, but why would Apple have a USB adapter? People are already testing USB headphones, keyboards, etc.

THe answer is money, two-fold.

1.) Apple will make money off adapter sales for the current iPad.
2.) And again when people upgrade to iPad v.2 when it includes a built in USB port, SD slot and for the LOVE OF G@D a CAMERA!!!!

The functionality people are testing is unsupported. Apple have always been clever about having unsupported functionality in their devices that they could disclaim responsibility for and keep unadvertised, but would spread by word of mouth and contribute to the perceived functionality of a device.

The thing is, there are plenty of people who don't want an SD slot or a USB port.

did you see any statistics about that, or are you just guessing?

everyone has use for a usb port. there are tons of devices that can be connected with a usb port. usb should have been standard on the ipad, and will be with ipad 2G.

Each class of devices needs an associated driver, and many need associated software. You could try sticking an EyeTV into the camera connection kit, bit what good will it do you?

Okay ... What do you propose to do with such a hard drive, once connected? The iPad doesn't have a user-visible filesystem, so you'd have a hard drive full of stuff, connected to your iPad, with no way to access any of its contents.

That's super useful.

As someone hoping a hard drive can be connected, I'll explain why I'd like it to work.

I like to travel, and do some amateur photography. Often, I'll travel places that don't have internet access. In an ideal situation, I would spend my day taking pictures. Come evening, I would import my photos from the SD card, and sort through them on the iPad. Once I have deleted the bad photos, I'd export the keepers to a USB backup drive, erase the SD card, and get ready for the next day's photo ops.

...in a super ideal world, there would be a gps logging app on the ipad that would embed the gps information to each photo when imported too...

I'd like to at least know if I can export back to SD, or if the only options for getting photos off the iPad involve connecting it to another computer.

LOL on iPad a mouse? I think iPad isn't your products then, buy a netbook/small notebook.

by the way, steve said the ipad is a better netbook. :)

and anyway, if its not for casual production instead for consumption only, why does apple sell iwork for the ipad? why do they offer a keyboard for the ipad? so why no mouse? would be usefull when you are typing your homework or doing some charts.

just because you can't imagine anything else besides surfing the net while on the couch does not mean that the ipad is not capable of more. other people would do something else with this device. its a free world. :)

How is this a new product? The iPod Touch has been around since 2007, it's just a big version of that. Your argument appears to suggest that apple intentionally gimped the iPad so that technophobes could get used to it without scary features such as USB ports and cameras, you know, crazy stuff that's completely alien to them. If this was there sole intention then it's highly patronising. On the other hand, if they didn't include a USB because they didn't like the look of it, then that's just tragic vanity.

Oh yeah, right! Apple should have realized that and then not wasted millions on developing the iPad. Gee, they're dumb, aren't they! Hopefully, you'll survive long enough, despite your intellectual challenges, to see for yourself the truth in my words.

i am so sure someone will create an app for watching tv via eyeTV. :)

i never thought about that but now that you mention it, the ipad would make a great mobile tv set! to heck with the bookstore, i want free tv on the ipad now! how could apple forget about that? i mean do american kids really read books anyway? :D

Just buy a few extra SD cards???

I can't understand why a simple SD card slot couldn't have been integrated into this thing. If they managed to fit everything they've put inside that prototype iphone, an SD slot could've been done with the ipad.

More money!

Steve Jobs said to have done 'everything' to keep the price as low as possible, but that unfortunately also means that we don't have a simple USB port and SD slot. Unlike the HP Slate. We on the other hand have to buy and carry two dongles. How stupid is that?

I guess that the production price needs to drop first, before we get what we should have got from day one. Now people have to wait for an update, the second iPad, which I presume will also be magical. Just like the current one.

May I ask to speed things up, Steve? Please?

Remember this one: "A netbook isn't good in anything". Really?

I think the other poster's "lol" at using a mouse was because the OS is completely touch based. There is no support for a mouse pointer, no apps expect a mouse pointer, you can't do multitouch, one of the main advertised features of the device, with a mouse pointer... It would be like asking Microsoft why Excel doesn't have Wii-mote support.

I think the touch interface is already fine for "casual production" though and I don't think it needs to support a mouse for that functionality.

So are you saying Apple is lazy? Either way, what you said is not clicking. I mean if they didn't include a simple USB port simply because they didn't want to support every type of device that could attach to that port, then what about the USB adapter? Wouldn't it create the same problem for Apple? Don't tell me there are no USB adapter for the iPad.
No, but the USB adaptor is clearly labelled as part of a camera connection kid. It is much easier to sell an adaptor to work with cameras than to say, yes, the iPad has a USB port, but no you cannot plugin just any device.

And the HP slate will probably run less than half the time of the iPad on a normal charge. How stupid is that?

Looks like both manufacturers made compromises in the design of their device...

Wow, good come back. You 're a real deep thinker. In the course of this thread you've attempted an insult and told me that apple have pumped millions into a glorified photo viewer for your Mom. You should go into the advertising business. Keep up the good work brainiac.

Is the Slate even out yet? I always enjoy how an unreleased product always takes on a mythical status.

Still not clicking. They could do the same with an internal USB port: Support a limited amount of devices, note that in the manual, and inform users calling Apple Support.
Apple would have to say in the manual, this USB port is for cameras and for cameras only (because everything else is not fully tested/implemented). How would that go down with the critics? They would say the iPad only has a crippled USB port, and that the iPad is a half-baked device. By moving that half-bakedness off to an accessory, the iPad in itself remains a device which is more consistent.

No, it is not. But the fact that flying pigs have not been released does not mean I cannot complain that my pig does not fly.

Its not that they couldn't put the feature in, its that they know you'll want that feature even more a year later after you've already bought the 1st gen.
Like all people buying the v2, v3 and soon v4 or the iPhone because they included USB ports that v1 did not.

what is going on?

How did he put 6 icons in the bottom  is that something that the ipad can do? :D Sweet if that is an option.

Have you not seen the take-apart posted by iFixIt? There's no room for a USB connector or an SD slot!

There would have been if Apple didn't put in such a stupidly large battery! Who needs to be using this thing for 10 hours straight? Even 6 hours is enough for anyone to be using it on and off during the day for an entire day. Also, a smaller battery would have made it lighter.

Well I thought I had heard them all, but that's the first time I've read someone complaining that the iPad had too much battery life ;)

So I would have to buy an add on to use USB devices? carry it around with me, have it sticking out of the bottom and then most likely lose it? Question, why didn't they include a USB port and sd card slot? To make money selling these kits? Or just because they are idiots?
Apple uses the following philosophy when designing software or hardware: Unless 80.% of the people will use it, leave it out. There is no SD slot, for example, because they believe less than 80% of the people need one. For the rest there is a dongle. That's the reasoning.

This is similar to macbooks having had proprietary video outputs (apple dvi, mini-dvi, micro-dvi, displayport, mini-displayport). I've heard people complain about having to get dongles, and wonder why Apple didn't just put in the usual 15-pin socket and get it done with. But IMHO, the upside is that one output can connect to a variety of devices, you just have to get the right dongle. This can't be done with a vga output.

I can imagine Apple (and third party accessory makers) will come up with other (and newer) connectors in the near future. So it will eventually be able to connect to more than just present-day USB devices.

I'm thinking about sometime when I'm on the road and someone wants to borrow my iPad to load up and view 200 photos from their phone. My response: "Uh, gee, sorry - there's no built-in USB connection or SD card slot" (without mentioning the adapters in my bag) ;)
