Wow, good come back. You 're a real deep thinker. In the course of this thread you've attempted an insult and told me that apple have pumped millions into a glorified photo viewer for your Mom. You should go into the advertising business. Keep up the good work brainiac.

Well at least you spell pretty good. That could help keep you employed!

USB port as well as SD card slot should have been integrated into design...

or...

At very frekn least - actual connector kit should have been included with iPad.

Just another poorly executed Apple rip-of.

My 2 cents

Usb & Sd

I don't have a problem with not integrating a USB port or an SD slot as long as they provide the same functionalities through wi-fi or bluetooth.

If they can just update iTunes so that it can work over Wi-Fi or bluetooth then I can live without them.

You can replace the SD functionality with a Shared Documents Folder that you can drag and drop through iTunes back and forth to your Mac.

iTunes Changes:
1. Have iTunes connect to your iPod, iPhone or iPad through Wi-Fi if present
2. If you hook up through the USB cable to charge, automatically enable tethering through iTunes software to enable networking with your operating system (NAT).

iPod, Iphone, and iPad changes in iTunes:
1. Create a new Documents folder under iTunes Library and the device so that you can drag and drop files that you want to share across all applications on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
2. Make the Photos folder available under the device so that you can manually drag and drop pictures instead of being restricted to syncing. Create the same Photos folder under the Library for those that want to sync.
3. Make the Apps folder available under the device so that you can drag and drop applications instead of being restricted to syncing. Basically enable manual functionality for the apps folder just like the music folder.

This is my wish list for iTunes... If I can get this, then I have no need for an SD or USB port.

There's just no point in an SD slot, it's not a standard worth supporting when there are alternatives such as Compact Flash to consider too and it adds nothing when you can just plug the camera in instead.

USB however... I can understand the difficulty of fitting it into the iPhone / iPod form factor but not the iPad. My guess is that it simply didn't fit within the design philosophy of either the hardware or OS: the iPod was traditionally a USB client not a host though the iPad is starting to blur that line. Shame really, it would come alive with hard drives, usb sticks and and interesting peripherals and that flimsy connector really is an ergonomic nightmare.

SD IS the standard – that was reported at the recent CES. It is in the new Canon EOS 5D-Mark II, along with the CF slot that its older cameras have. My phone uses SD. My mp3 player uses SD. My Canon Si uses SD. The capacity is up to 32GB right now, although I am using an 8 GB class 10 because of the lower price while I see how well the class 10 SDHC card performs.

I would believe that I do NOT have to use iPhoto to pull images from the iPad onto my Mac. But, because of these tricks of releasing a model now and next year adding another feature, followed by another the next year, I won't buy one until it has sufficient features to allow me to use whatever other devices I have with the iPad – if ever. You KNOW all of the features that would make everyone buy the device is available NOW; but for reasons of extracting more money from the consumer, those features are added incrementally.

if any other company chose to use these connection dongles for simple USB or SD access for their devices instead of, i don't know, building them into the device, the fanboys on this site would be having a field day.

a single 30-pin connector != magic.

Exactly - it is typical Apple strategy that's been in place for fair few years now and quite frankly it is disgusting...

Actual real life, contemporary standard features, are replaced with marketing hype which turns device(s) into not much more than NY - London - Paris - Tokyo gay parade fashion accessories.

Cool for some - sure!

But I will pass :)

Don't worry! :D

In about 16 months time SJ will walk out on the stage at introduce ground breaking most awesome feature ever for iPad 2.0...

USB PORT!

Cant wait to see fanboiz wetting their nappiez!

:p

Yeah, pretty disgusting that they add features to a product over time! That's why I'll pass on Snow Leopard, they should've put all that stuff in 10.0!

Give me an example of this "marketing hype" that replaced "standard features". If you don't like it, don't buy it, genius. Obviously enough people don't care about an SD slot, or don't whine that they have to add it on as an option, to avoid the iPad. I bet if they put every "contemporary standard feature" under the sun into the iPad, you still wouldn't buy it, judging by your bigoted attitude.

I like my iPad, but I agree just one USB port could add so much to the device. An SD card slot would be nice as well. Just those two things would add so much to the device. If Apple is serious about taking it a step further then the iPod Touch then they should add some additional ports.

Just imagine if you could plug in a USB device like a printer. It would be great!

This sounds like the iPod discussions back in '01.

How so? The iPad is a much different device than the first iPod was. It has the capability to be used as a computer. Don't you wish for a second that your iPad had a USB port? I know a couple of times so far I wish that I could plug in my printer or camera and do something instead of having to send the file to a computer first. It would make things easier.

I had (and still have) money for portable device such as iPad and yes I would buy it if it supports contemporary standard features such as:

- flash player for web browser
- sd card slot
- usb port with support for external HD, printer and camera connection (and similar devices)
- built in camera for skype calls

to mention only god damn OBVIOUS things :D

As it is - they can take it and shove it up "somewhere"...

:)

EDIT:

In fact, I take iPad, together with Apple marketing and pricing scheme as frekn insult - it is that bad imho!

I think only a USB needed to be placed into the iPad. Then no matter what phone you had you could use it via the USB cable, printing, and thumb drives would have been thought about as well.

What will blackra1n be able to do with these adapters? Especially the USB?

iBooks

Can you read the iBooks in iTunes versus syncing it up to your iPad to read with iBooks Apps?

By the way does anyone know if this camera connection kit would read a USB jump drive? That would be a nice way to be able to get other documents transferred to the iPad.

Ports Are the New Floppy

They're definitely not idiots. It's to make more money, and to give people more reason to buy the next generation ipad, which will probably have a camera, better internals, and an SD and/or USB slot.

Sorry, but the one thing future iPads will never receive: additional ports. No USB port, no SD port, no [insert port here] port.

32-pin is here for a while folks. One pin, several possibilities is so much more Apple than adding ports. Unknown transfer rate potential aside (do current 32-pin port specs account for the read/write speed requirements of [say] an external drive?), don't be surprised to see this single-port philosophy cary over to their entire line of portables (I'm looking at you, MB, MBP & MBA). Why have several ports when one 32-pinner can handle charging, USB, etc.?

Just sayin'.

The Dongle sucks. I don't think anyone wants to carry another little trinket around and pay $30 for it.

On the other hand it isn't the end of the world either given you are carrying around the iPad and a camera anyways.

CAn we all agree there? Thank you.

you are correct to a certain degree. the delay from usb3 indicates a lack of commitment. i would say this is because it is somewhat of a dead standard. light peak however has support from apple and intel and there have even been rumours of idevices including support.

we will lose 32-pin ports when chips integrate something better, like lightpeak for example.

Why in the hell couldn't have Apple just given us a USB port and an SD Card slot on the iPad. It would have solved all of these other problems and things people cannot do on the iPad. I just don't get no USB port as so many devices can be used with USB. The iPad could be so much better just with one lousy USB port.

Anyways, at least this is some decent news and provides somewhat of a workaround.

Its so they have features to add to next years model.

People wanted a cheap tablet, they got it. How do you think Apple is going to make money out of this device which it's been said they're already losing on it?

I mean, the iPad is cheaper than an iPhone lol. Did you really think Apple was going to miss out? They didn't add these ports because everything was pre-planned. You want USB, SD? You're paying it for it, lol. I mean common, the iPad is the first product of its kind, and it didn't even come with a Docking station! I bought the 32GB version, paid 700 bucks with the Apple case, and taxes. I, then bought the dock, 30 bucks, and now buying this, another 30 bucks. I will have spent about 800 bucks total for a device that's labeled as being $599.

Was I caught offguard? No, this is fine for me and totally expected. Those people who complain about why Apple didn't add this to begin with, would have been complaining about the price if Apple would have included these ports in the device with a higher price tag. You just can't please everyone, because they will always find everything unjustifiable. Go figure. Business is business, and Apple (just like every other company) is in the business of making money.

It would cost them next to nothing to add a sd card slot and a USB port. The base iPad costs $260 for production and raw parts. Its sold for $500. They are not losing money. They are making a ton.

Since I went yesterday to the Genious Bar and wanted to chargme $1240 to change the $80 hard drive of my 12" powerbook I clearly see what ****** Apple is about.

They wanted to charge you the price of a MacBook Pro to swap the drive in your PowerBook? ;)

I bet the next revision of the iPad will, at the very least, have a faster CPU with more RAM, which I'd rather have than an SD card slot if given a choice. I also think an integrated camera is one of the things they *will* add. But a bunch of ports? not so much. Especially when they already sell a workaround for the lack of those ports for $29.
