I love how people STILL talk about the pocket issue.... do you shove a netbook in your pocket? Is that why they are so successful? wtf, people. Wake up. The iPad is NOT an iPhone, it isn't a notebook, it's something IN BETWEEN and as such it isn't subject directly to the preconceptions of the forms or function.

You have to step outside and think of what people need and want. The iPad is NOT a phone, it isn't a full OS computer; it's a comfortable browsing/media/gaming computer which doesn't cost a load, need to be unfolded, be charged every 3 or 4 hours, doesn't take long to start up or shut down, and can be used standing or sitting without hassle. Try coming out of the geek-troll-hole and be a real person who wants info and fun on the run, not hacking and building 3D renders.

EXACTLY!! As a student, I love that it is iWork and can use it anywhere on campus and at home (WiFi). The fact I do not have to wait for it to start up or have the annoying clicking of keys during class is why I will be buying one. I was not sold on the idea until I heard the price and saw iWork!

what if you want to read a book, surf the web, play a game in a cramped space like a bus or coach on an aeroplane with more screen real estate than any smartphone.

A laptop is fantastic for sitting in starbucks with a little table or a lap. but I can see myself not using my MBP as much with a iPad in hand... I could do almost all the same work with an ipad when I'm out as I can with a laptop(writing, emails, web browsing) and it's way lighter than a laptop.

That's great if you want to do those things. But, I don't read books or play games, I don't have time for that. I don't ride the bus or fly, I drive, so I don't have the ability to do things like that while I travel. When I go places for work I don't have room for a 10" device. I just have my pockets for my phone. If I need to check something, it's much more convenient. Not to mention the fact I don't want to pay $629 for a 3G device AND pay $30/month for the ability to do that.

I found this device to be very interesting. It has Android OS 2.1 and it's considered a "SmartBook" which is more in-line with what the iPad is, a device that runs a smart phone OS. It has a touch screen, 3G, wi-fi, 12 hours of continuous usage, and 2 days standby.

'Fun on the run'. When I'm on the run, I don't have a backpack or a lot of space around. So getting a $629 device plus $30/month with no where to put it is pointless for me. Maybe some people who have more time or more space on the go or spend their time in coffee shops, buses, or airplanes have the ability to use a device like this. But I don't. So to me, it doesn't work.

It would be great for me if I'm on the coach at home and want to quick browse the web or something, but I already have my laptop right there, so I don't see a need for the iPad for me unless I were to sell my laptop.

That's the hard sell for an 'in-between' device. It isn't an iPhone, no. But it's like an iPhone. It isn't a laptop, but it's like a laptop. So if you have two devices that the iPad functions like already, what's the point of the iPad?

much more compelling, considering it would replace a laptop.

I'll probably end up getting one of those but I see smartbooks in a different category to the iPad.

They did?

Do you have a link to support this? I hope that went into consideration for the report if that is in fact true!

It is true but has nothing to do with the trend in this graph. Apple doesn't accept any new apps from a few days before Christmas to a few days after. However, this graph shows the trend in projects that start using Flurry during development. Developers aren't going to stop working on new apps or switch to Android just because Apple isn't accepting completed apps for a week.

Atleast you sound like a Windows Worshipper (those words came out of the blue).

All this bickering about who has the best OS or devices is just plain childish. In some parts of this world technology will always be, just a dream.

Consider yourself lucky.

are we going to have to re-buy apps for "iPad versions"?

hmmmm.... it was my understanding that iPhone/iTouch apps would also work on the iPad. Are developers like yourself working on exclusive versions that are only for the iPad and won't work on the iPhone/iTouch? ie. when you buy and app you have to either get the iPad version OR the smaller platform version?

So if I buy an iPad, I might have to re-buy many of my iPhone apps for iPad use?

You must not do any real work on your MBP. Should've bought a cheaper computer!

Well, my MBP is 3.5 years old at this point so the investment has more than amortized in any case. I was going to replace it with something, and for me choosing an iPad over an Air say (or another MBP) is a super easy decision, and it's not about cost.

As for what I do or do not do, and your definition of real work, my guess is that you have to broaden your thinking, as well as open your eyes to the capabilities the iPad already has as demo'd by SJ, to say nothing of what it'll be capable of with OS4 and several months of app development.

Years with an iPhone have taught me how incredibly capable it is. A larger screen, capable of more complex multi touch gestures, underpinned by much more powerful hardware, in a still-thin and light package (compared even to a netbook), that's already inspiring the dev community = a no doubt recipe for massive success for the iPad.

Don't worry, you'll be singing a different tune in the not too distant future...

that's like saying your new pretty pink tricycle is going to replace your BMW, full time.

Lol seriously.

I mean I am one of the camp who would have loved and bought a tablet macbook pro (for less than 3grand) if apple had made one, but they are at least headed in that direction.

My biggest beef is apple is playing it too conservatively, its like how honda took forever to edge into the Suv market right about the time that that markets bottom fell out. And they had to scramble to bring the fit to the usmarket, something I personally wanted for a full 5 years before they brought it to the American market.

I am skeptical of ipad myself, don't get me wrong I want that type of device, but not a glorified iphone, a ful osx machine with (preferably wacom support but at this point if its close I would take anything)
But other than the crappy windows offering I will just have to wait till the market catches up to me I guess.

All of your iPhone/iPod Touch apps will work on your iPad, and nothing the developer does will change that. However, if you want the iPad-enhanced version (i.e. not just the size-doubled iPhone version), then in some cases you might have to buy a new version, or the developers can choose to package it along with the existing iPhone version as a free update.

So you don't carry a briefcase or porfolio or anything?

What kind of work do you do that you just have your pockets and a phone?

No he wont. Perhaps he is out of line saying that you don't do any real work, but it is all relevant. I for one, I'm sure that I won't be able to do what I consider "work" on an iPad. I won't be able to program on it, I won't be able to type documents for extended periods of time, and lack of multitasking bothers me.

BUT, I'm not looking forward to this device for "working purposes". I want a device to browse, read, and just generally chill. If I can find solutions to some of the problems I'm currently thinking of (no ability to stream music from my media server, while doing anything else on it), I'll sure as hell get one.

Guess what, it's all relative. The iPad is not a working device, it's a media/internet device.

I work for a school district in the technology department. Just traveling from school to school fixing problems and configuring software. I don't really carry around a bag or anything.

You are right there. The iPad isn't a working device, yet Apple is releasing a keyboard and iWork for it, so the lines seem a bit blurred.

Listen, I'm not all negative towards the iPad. I think it has the potential to be a good device. BUT, I don't think the mass market will try to find a fit for it in their lifestyle. I think right now you see geeks or Apple diehards trying to make it fit because they want one, but I don't think it fills a void that people have in their life and would need it. Honestly, I think the majority of people have enough money for a computer, maybe a smartphone and media player and I don't think they would be willing to spend the money on another device.

Seems weird. No tools no nothing? You don't have a bag?

Just seems odd to me.

Seems like such a device ike an ipad would be useful for such a job and just tuck it into your bag. But whatever, it is your job.

I just have known people who do similar jobs, and they always have a bag of tools and such for doing cabling, wiring, repairs etc.

I know, that's why I don't have a "smartphone". It isn't a dedicated GPS device, but it can determine your location. It isn't a PSP, but it plays games. It isn't a camera, but it can take pictures. So you have three devices that the iPhone functions like already, what's the point of the iPhone? You can get a phone that does just calls much cheaper.

That's because its a percentage based graph between the two platforms. As there is only ever 100 possible units, as one increases that leaves less for the 2nd platform and vice versa. :)

Oh duh, my bad.

In that case, I'm going to complain about what how in appropriate the graph is for displaying that particular information.
