probably not the lame joke forum but..

I guess when you forget your iPad you end up with a streak.

Finally something that becomes available in the UK before the US :D
Is DELL British or something? Didn't know about that!
Anyway, I don't think their tablet is very interesting, especially because it runs Android!

Dell is definately American, but i dont understand why they would launch in the UK first - maybe trying to beat the iPad just before it becomes availiable to everyone in the UK.

The kindle has its nitch and its loyal following. That's great. My wife wanted one initially and after seeing the iPad introduced and everything we offered we waited. I haven't heard the kindle mentioned since we bought it. Although it doesn't replace a laptop, it does do a lot. Great for gaming or watching movies. Unbeatable at viewing pics and comfortable sitting on coach browsing the web. I have read a few books on it and really don't mind. It has been cool to read books to the kids off there too when we were on vacation. Anybody body remember that Ray Stevens song??? "Don't Look Ethel!!" More like don't buy

Michael Dell is a Texan. So I guess same thing.

5 inches is a weird size. It's too big to be super portable, yet too small for a true tablet experience. I'll be really surprised if it lasts.

This is true.

I use an ipod touch as my ultra portable device. It effortlessly fits in my pockets and in the center console of my car.

The form factor of the Streak combines the negatives of the touch and ipad without the positives of either.

I would have to agree. Dell has basically made the iPod Touch for Android users, but sadly I don't see it really competing with the iPad or being used as a computer replacement for people that don't need full computers during the day.

The EVO and other HTC phones are running Android and have 4.3" screens, I don't see that extra 0.7" being a great improvement.

Maybe if it were 7" - 9" and had new Android apps optimized for that screen size?

The Kindle is a superior reading experience. I can see them keeping a niche market, although that market will probably have shrunk with defection to the iPad.

I think there is a market with kids for this size device. I would not be surprised to see a 5 - 7 inch iPod touch introduced this fall when the iPods are typically refreshed. If so, it will have the higher screen resolution, iPhone OS 4.x, have access to over 200,000 Apps, be thinner, and look one heck of a lot better than the Streak.

I love iPad/iPhone copycats. They come out with a crap device, slap YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter on it and instantly think they have a "cool" device.

I agree 100%! The iPad is not a replacement but a device to have alongside a desktop and/or a laptop. I can't wait to get one (I have to hold my breath until July). I don't see it as book reader per sé, but more one to browse magazines and newspapers. And: with the IR thingy you can also use it as a programmable remote control. Couch potato heaven :D

I don't think the iPad will soak up too many Kindle owners. It's still far better for that purpose than the iPad given the price and the lack of contract for 3G.

Some may opt for a used iPad once the world has had it's fill or the second version arrives, and the used market is flooded with iPads of all sizes.

One could argue that the iPad is an oversized iPhone/itouch iPod.

It is. I know that some have to con themselves into thinking it's not, but it is. What's sad is that NO ONE said that a big iPod Touch was a bad idea.

Did anyone watch the video on Dell's website? Kevin Andrews sounds like he memorized Jobs' iPad keynote: [the Streak] needs to be better than any other device in that space; it needs to be good for consuming content on the go, it has a great industrial design, blah blah blah. It's pretty humorous. Jobs is technology's Pied Piper, leading copycats into their own Weser River.

The streak seems to be for the people who think the ipad is too large.

IMHO this may be a very small market that gets eaten up by the iphone and the ipad from both sides.
The problem is going to be lack of apps unless it sells a lot. Who is going to write an app to take advantage of larger screen, but at the same resolution as a high end Android phone? I suspect it is going to be a media only device with a few specialized apps here and there. It does not sound like a recipe for success unless Dell puts as much money and effort behind it as Apple does for Touch.

There is perhaps a vast number of people who aren't yet initiated as followers of the sect called Apple (pun intended). Common folk, like 95% of my colleagues, who vaguely heard of the name Apple but nothing more. Let them be. As the rest of the world produces cr@p, how could that be of any thread to Apple? Huh? :D

Not surprised Amazon is focusing on just reading with the Kindle. I don't think they would EVER be able to come close to the usefulness/coolness of an iPad. So they might as well make the "just reading" experience as best as it can be. They might think about lowering their prices, though...Kindles seem very high now compared to an iPad, when you consider reading is ALL they do...

The Streak??? Seriously???
That just looks really sad.....

Pretty much sums up my opinions.

I was in awe over the Kindle when I saw it. I still am, but I would hate to spend even $200 on just an e-reader. It also limits me to only Kindle Store books, while an iPad would allow access to both those and iBooks. The Kindle screen is much better for reading and has advantages like readbility in sunlight, but I'm still planning for an iPad.

The Streak does look horrible. I don't even know why you'd bother with such a device with a 5-inch screen. What's the point?

We don't need another iPhone OS Touch device. There'd be no purpose for it and would cause confusion.

Or, take a successful product, make it bigger, and throw magical all over the marketing page.

I give Dell some credit, especially since there's no Android tablet from a reputable manufacturer yet. They just should have made it bigger, and gotten Google to push some devs to make optimized apps for it. Their biggest mistake would be not actually copying Apple tit for tat, that would have actually made this thing very successful.

Uhmmmmmmmmm why does it have a interchangeable battery ?? Hhmmmmmmmm let me think because the battery sucks. The device was not engineered to use the battery efficiently. Basicly this rushed product is being a weak attempt to compete with Apple. Who ever buys this clearly dose not see this and deserve a low grade product such as this

^ I was wondering the same thing. They brag about features but don't mention once, battery life. If you try to hide battery life, then its usually pretty bad.

Good points. Kindle, I think, is better than the iPad at pure reading, and there could very well be a market for readers only, with light, light text-emphasis browsing. But only if the price was substantially lower than an iPad. Otherwise, most consumers would trade off for a more versatile device with only just a little bit more.

Agreed. I really like my Kindle. For book, and especially, outdoor reading, the Kindle is far superior to the iPad. However, Amazon missed a great opportunity to hook a lot more readers by not offering it a much lower price point.

At present, the iPad is a fantastic device. In the future, it will be even better. The Dell Streak looks nice, but it's no competition for the iPad.

Con? Full of ourselves, aren't we? Poor lemmings conned themselves. Yes, iPad is just a large Touch the same way laptops are just compact iMacs.
