I actually had a Kindle 2 in my hands for the first time over the weekend. It's a much better-looking device when you see it in person, and it really is much lighter and easier to hold than the iPad... that said, I have no intention of ever buying one, just giving credit where credit is due.

Heard the Nook is an even better device because it supports WIFI and allows you to share books with a friend, and it has a cleaner interface.

That's a sweet looking Blackberry Storm, I wonder why they made it so much bigger than regular ones.

... will hit stores in the U.K. in June, and the U.S. later this summer. Pricing has not yet been announced...

At least DELL is coming out with a product!

The other _major_ players come out with prototypes, then cancel their plans.

I've read rumors that the Streak will cost around $1000. With versions of the iPad for half that, the iphone and other smartphones even cheaper, who would spend $1000 on a 5" Dell device?

Some people want a device that they can decide what to do with and how to use in instead of the apple devices where someone else chooses what you can and can't do with it. Maybe people want a device that can use multiple video formats?

Let me guess: Layoffs in your group at Adobe? Bummer.

What happened to the rumored Kindle SDK? I was looking forward to games like this:

All iPad Gripes Checked

This thing checks all of the iPad gripes:

1. Front facing camera
2. Back facing camera
3. GPS
4. SD Slot
5. User replaceable battery.

So now we will see how great it is for video conferencing . . . . . . . Well, we would if the operating system supported it! Can you imagine Apple adding a front facing camera for video chat and then saying "well we don't actually have an App for that, but it will be great when there is one!"

I have an iPad, but I have no use for an iPhone because I barely get much use out of my Tracfone. I therefore fall in to the iTouch category, except that the iTouch lacks all the iPhone features I would like such as camera and GPS. This would be an interesting alternative to the iPod Touch. It is not an alternative to the iPad because of the low screen resolution.

Google remains to be seen, particularly in hardware. Dell can figure out what people want and get them what they want, more or less, cheaply, but it's not necessarily done well or fine-tuned.

<rant>
Dell, like everyone else, is just milking the widespread windoze lock-in.

Two thoughts:

Applications for a black and white screen?... I have a feeling no matter how long I spend thinking about this one, I will only ever come up with etchasketch, and still have no idea how the interface would work. Actually, the Kindle does look a bit like an etchasketch. So, the SDK looks rather like a desperate mee too move.

Dell Streak...

Oh dear. I think I'll eat my ancient South African leather hat if this thing sells in any serious quantities. I'll give a $100 to charity the first time I see one - if I can stop laughing long enough.

Seriously a mini-tablet.. That is just an oversized phone. (In this case it is actually true). They called it a tablet to soak up some iPad hype.

Good Luck with that Dell...

What will you say when after the iPod MaxiPad, Apple will release the 5-7" versions? I'm sure that this screen size can serve a lot of customers who don't want a 10" screen. Archos already proved that there is a market...

Not surprised Amazon is focusing on just reading with the Kindle. I don't think they would EVER be able to come close to the usefulness/coolness of an iPad. So they might as well make the "just reading" experience as best as it can be. They might think about lowering their prices, though...Kindles seem very high now compared to an iPad, when you consider reading is ALL they do...

The Streak??? Seriously???
That just looks really sad.....

Yes, the Kindle can do one thing. BUT it can do that one thing better than the iPad. That's the point of e-readers. When quality colour e-paper screens become commercially viable, these devices will be able to serve a much wider audience than Apple.

good points, but I wouldn't under estimate the "want it cheap" market.

That's right. It overlaps with Apple's target market somewhat, but certainly not entirely. I think that's why the two companies can co-exist.

(Where a lot of people gets confused is that they think there's only one market and that companies have to directly compete with each other; that's not necessarily the case if you can identify a large enough market that doesn't encroach on another company's....)

Huh??? Sure. Lots of books out there with multi-color ink. Almost choked laughing at that one.

At least Streak has a camera, unlike other tablets I know of

Less crappy cameras on devices is a good thing from my perspective.

I am tired of people uploading crappy pictures to the internet which they have taken with really crappy cameras in some device that is not intended to be a camera.

The less blurry, small-sized pictures available on the web, then the better.

If something is worth taking a picture of, then use a decent camera. That's my view.

That would be crazy. Its bigger than an iPhone so I could see it selling for more $200 but it has to be less than an iPad or it makes no sense. If its half the size but more expensive who is going to buy it.

Looking at it, it looks like a $250 device to me. An interesting size but I would have to hold one in my hand to see if it was bigger enough to make web bing better enough than an iPhone/iPod Touch to be interesting.

perfect example that the us doesnt get everything early

And thank god (insert your own imaginary person that you pray to here) for that! Who wants this tiny Dell "tablet"?

As long as Apple still releases certain products first in the US, such as the iPad, then Dell can do whatever they like.

Dell can even release their latest, greatest thing exclusively in North Korea, and that would be fine by me too!

Dell blows chunks, but that device is EXACTLY the correct size. Big enough to make it very very useful, and small enough to pocket.

I actually wish my iPhone was BIGGER.

I actually don't get it at all. It's too big to be a phone, too small to be useful as an internet/reading device, IMO. The screen in the EVO 4G looks amazing, but even then I believe it's going a bit too far. A cellphone is a cellphone, come on!

About the Kindle, well those who like reading a lot and want a device that's specialized for reading will still prefer it. Those another kind of device, something that allows them to do many more things will want an iPad. I honestly don't really them as direct competitors.

I honestly don't really them as direct competitors.

Isn't Apple already eating a big chunk out of Amazon's sales of the kindle?

I think that there's a big segment of the market who do want to read ebooks etc., but they also want to be able to do a gazillion other things with their device, such as surf the web, watch movies, listen to music, play games etc. All of the people who fit under that huge category will get an iPad and not a Kindle.

More fail from the "competition", if they can even be called that. It's as if they've gone completely retarded when it comes to the prestige tech market.

When Dell comes out with a Streak Maxi-Tablet I will consider buying one for my girlfriend--she has heavy cycles and bad PMS.
