I would think inbetween flipping burgers and working the fry machine you would be able to come up with a different insult. You fail with the adobe attack, it is typical apple zealot behavior though.

And you fail with the "apple zealot" attack, it is typical troll behavior though.

I gave up reading the comments on Engadget. Rarely anything enlightening, more often a slagging match. Any comments in particular you mean?

Got to agree with you there - it's no single comment, however the trend has swung round to the 'iTards', 'Fanbois', 'people with iPads'?

It almost seems (to my observations, BTAIM) that now iPads are on the street and in (almost) general use,
defenders of the Jedi Alliance are on the high ground, taking the iPad fight to them?

The Kindle is too expensive now. 490$ for the DX? 260$ for the 6"? There isn't much going for the Kindle except weight. Every casual reader out there will prefer to pay 500$ for something much more useful.

Well, unless someone has done market research to that affect, no one can say. I would put money on the diehard reader going for the device that was made specifically for the reader, you know, the niche market.

While the person that wants to read as just one form of consuming media will go for the iPad. It'd be a waste of money to spend $500 on a device that I am only going to use for reading.

I like the form factor of the Dell device, Usable but a bit awkward as a phone, but as a browser and PC, rather better than an an iphone, the problem i see with the ipad, is that you still need to carry a phone and a laptop, Are you going to carry all three? Something the size of that Dell with a headset could potentially replace both.

Good move by Amazon. No way they could compete with Apple on Apple's terms. However, they are probably right there is room for an excellent reading-only device.

Dell-- oh loooky there's a market there-- let's just throw some lump of $@*# in there and see if it floats!

Flipping burgers and working the fry machine? Now you're projecting. Has it really come to that now that Adobe is cutting back? All of your newbie posts have been about flash. Tell us again why you're here.

Step 1: recycle lame adobe attack
Step 2: refuse to admint you work at burger king
Step 3: see step one

I bought a Kobo, a $150 eBook reader which is a bit more reasonable than the Kindle. I find e-Ink way nicer to read on than an LCD screen. My eyes get strained after awhile on a computer screen and if I'm on it long enough I get a headache. I already spend 8 hours a day on a computer at work, and countless minutes here and there on my iPhone, my Kobo is a perfect companion to my life.

...or neither.

It reminds me of Maxwell Smart's shoe phone; it's that clumsy-bad. At five inches, it's neither pocket-sized portable small, nor can you see a whole letter-sized document or spread-sheet on it.

You make the erroneous judgment that one would need to carry both an iPad and laptop to function, rather then realize that a person will decide how much computer power he/she needs to haul around and buy accordingly.

Since an iPad is capable of doing all but the most intensive tasks, it fills the sub-laptop gap excellently except for perhaps gaming. The Dell will need to be priced like a iPod Touch to fit comfortable under an iPad's price point, but then still will lack the library of business or game apps that the iPod or iPad have.

Fortunately the Dell SkidMark™ has the old-fashioned ability to change out internal batteries so the user can ratchet a new one in every 20 to 30 minutes. This messes up the portability of the device since you'll need to have extra over-sized pockets to carry your batteries and optional recharger/coffee warmer.

The Dell SkidMark™, available in "dull brown" or "fresh red."

I would classify the Amazon read-only device as appealing to "passive" users, while the iPad will appeal more to the "active" user; those who want to interact with their text, a la the Wired magazine app. The Dell SkidMark™ will appeal to uninformed Dell loyalists who need a paper weight to round out their desk clutter.

Hi,

The streak looks too small to be an iPad competitor. It just looks like a larger touch, zune, or smart phone.

s.

Then again, it's easier to hold than the "just big enough, smooth enough, and rounded enough to make it uncomfortable to hold" iPad.

Subjective much?

Or pot calling the kettle black much?

People What in sams hell do you think the iPad is when the next gen iPhone comes out with the same hardware inside.

its just a over sized iPhone/iPod touch.

my god some of you are dense.

By your logic a 27" iMac and a 15" MacBook Air are the same thing...just one is oversized. Having the same "brains" is good for compatible software, but overall hardware packaging makes them fulfill different user needs.

This thing checks all of the iPad gripes:

1. Front facing camera
2. Back facing camera
3. GPS
4. SD Slot
5. User replaceable battery....

There's one other (completely not) important feature I hear a lot, in that the iPad is nearly always called a "crippled giant iPhone". So,

6. Phone

The Dell is *actually* a phone.

I love it, we're comparing phones to tablet computers, and two products that have completely different sizes. The similarity that for some reason justifies a comparison? They're rectangular and thin, and they both have a touch interface.

And, true to form, Dell released yet another hunk of uninspiring junk-ware. I'm beginning to think Michael Dell actually enjoys the constant derision and embarrassment.

What ever did Dell innovate, other than the supply chain? I have never understood the fascination with Dell. I have a Dell laptop now at work and I *hate* it - it's a cheap piece of crap (and heavy), but my IT department keeps telling me, it's state of the art and expensive.

Isn't this just a bigger Android? This large phone (which they are calling a tablet to grab some attention) reeks of desperation - one more attempt to grab that spotlight before they they become the new Gateway.

Streak?

Dell today officially announced the Streak?!?

I believe they should have written the story closer to the truth... Dell today officially recreates the Nokia N800.

I have owned both the N770 and N800 models. For their time, these were great little devices. Their limited screen resolution prevented them from being used for serious applications in the field where they would have been very useful. I feel that the "new" Dell device will suffer from the same limitations, and will lock itself into a very limited user audience.

Yes, iPad is just a large Touch the same way laptops are just compact iMacs.
Can't you read?
News flash: The laptop came before the iMac with laptop parts.
Really, that is your response? Do you think I was trying to make a comparison about the release dates of two sets of products?

Yes, honey, the differences of an iMac and 13'' laptop can be boiled down to just size, which does not affect user experience at all other than the size of the carrying case you'd need. Oh, wait, there is also that newsflash about which one got released first. How could I forget about that important aspect of this discussion, sorry, my bad...
