Android phones outsell iPhones because everyone has a phone, and chances are they'll have a cheap phone. But tablets are less common, and I'd call them toys in most cases (iPad Pro is an exception). Anyone buying a tablet is probably looking to spend money, so they'll get an iPad.

"Nobody"?? That's ridiculous. Of course there are people who want a keyboard. That's why there are so many keyboards available for the iPad.

It's no different than the people who want a pen. Tons of those available, too. Even Apple recognized that desire and brought out their own.

That said, even stock iPads are great. I have one in each bed and bathroom. (So I don't have to carry one around - grin.)
My point is a stock ipad can do it just fine on its own.

No they created the Macbook Air. As thin and light as an iPad with the full power of a computer.

...Thought I agreed until I owned the large iPad Pro.

For music creation I still use a desktop, but for all other tasks, I use my iPad rather than my MacBook.

I bought the large iPad for reading journal articles in PDF format, but ended up using it for most everything else as well.

Who actually needed an iPad? I have two that rarely get used. I also have an N7 and a Tab 8. Both used equally as little as my iPads. Neither Apple, Samsung, nor Google cared if I needed their products, they just wanted them sold. Mission accomplished. Forward looking, I don't see a tablet in my future. Not that my anecdote is indicative of the larger market, but I personally think tablet peak has already occurred.
I never understood it. Laptops already do everything unless you need to draw stuff
Web browsing isn't even very nice on a tablet. Like Steve Jobs said about a touch screen PC, you get tired of poking around the screen.

"Well... That's like..... your opinion, man."

I find web-browsing to be best when on a comfy chair with a good tablet in hand.

Steve Jobs was talking about desktops and maybe laptops. Certainly not tablets. And if what you say about poking around is true in general, then it would apply to phones as well. However, people seem to never tire of that.

Phones have small screens, which is why it's not a problem. Laptops and tablets have the same size screen. I sit at a computer for ~9 hours a day for work. No way I'd get anywhere close with a tablet.

I think there is something to the point you are making. Perhaps it depends on the work you are doing. But for casual webbrowising at home, nothing beats my iPad.

I also happen to have had a great time using my iPad for 6 months of heavy writing with the Smart Keyboard and multitasking for Evernote and safari on the side.

Shouldn't an iPad Pro be able to run "Pro" apps? The Surface Pro 4 can basically run any program Windows can.

I don't NEED my iPad, but when I'm on call and don't want to carry my laptop everywhere, phone and iPad get the job done. And yes, the iPad is definitely superior to the android offerings out there. And I'm not a fanboi, I've run Nexus phones, a couple different android tabs, iPhone and iPad, Windows, Linux and Mac at home, each has their place. iPhone is a choice, and I don't personally find it superior to Android phones, just different. iPad, superior.

I have laptops, desktops, and a host of other tech. Need was not a consideration in any of those purchases either.
lol you needed 4 tablets to realize you don't need a tablet...
Lol. I'm gonna assume you misunderstood my quote. It's premise was no one actually needs a tablet. I have purchased 4 over time because I wanted them. I am a fan of tech. If something interests me, I buy it. Need is rarely a consideration when making tech purchases.

People who don't own computers.

The Surface is a lot more expensive entry point, and bigger and heavier. If Amazons Fire tablet was beating Apples iPad then they would be in serious trouble! Although I believe Amazon are about to launch a new tablet so the rumours go. I think the HDX was the best one they've done so far.

Seems pointless really to point out the iPad is selling more? Because it's obvious isn't it?

Well, it's more than all of those combined (which, beyond the two you mentioned, also includes Samsung with a fairly extensive tablet lineup ranging in prices).

So have you just made a post to state what this story already states? I'm confused as to what your point is?
To answer your questions. Also to point out that you didn't mention a big player that is also part of it all, and a fairly big one as well (which contributes to the answer).

People who don't own computers don't need an iPad. There's no correlation, and besides, there are plenty of abacuses still available.:) Seriously, an iPad is a want or desire, not a need. It's simply a tablet choice. One of many.
Didn't know that by needs we are talking about basic needs. Sorry if I knew we were talking about needs like water, food and shelter I would of had a better argument put together. Or how about we don't talk about needs because that rabbit hole can get really deep.

All I'm saying is people without a computer would value a tablet far more than someone who has a computer. I don't use my tablet much either but I think it would be a different story if I didn't have a nice laptop.

I love my iPad Air 2 but OEM's stopped producing premium Android tablets consistently and Surface tablets are not cheap. So if anything iPad tablets should be at the top but at the same time sales are slowing.

I think both my mom's mom is the only person I know who needs an iPad. She's pretty much given up on trying to learn how to use that iMac we told her 100 times not to buy.

No, it's not, the Pro might be $200 more, but has a better CPU, better screen, supports the Apple Pencil and starts at 32GB.

If you use a $400 iPad for 2 years, that's $200 per year, if you use a $600 iPad for 3 years, that's also $200 per year, but you'll be more satisfied with the more expensive one, no doubt.

And the quad speakers really are a selling point. Huge difference in clarity and sound quality.
