MS enters the field with their cutting edge device.....rumoured to be "in design" for the last 5 years (and probably the next 5).

MS is toast.....run, jump, and just leave!!!!

MS doesn't make computers but I see your urge to display your fanboyism. As Apple rules all, why mention another company at all I say. Waste of precious forum time

Oh, please stop with this nonsense. The cell providers control what goes into an Android device, and they force certain apps to be there whether you want it or not. So let's stop pretending that everyone is good except evil Apple.

Porn can easily be accessed through a browser, OK?

its not a matter of porn....

Just which cell phone carriers restrict application installs on Android or any smartphone? Any that do should be avoided like the plague and are probably in the very minority anyway.

None in Canada don't and thats not a great market.

If you buy any phone out of contract the carrier of your choice cannot restrict you installing applications.

The iPad uses a Von Neumann architecture, it runs Turing derived instructions and it does not run Windows. Those three things make it a computer.
Actually, for Joe Consumer, it's not a computer.

There are different definitions of the word computer. You're using one very technical definition.

In a way, it's like describing a tomato as a fruit or vegetable. From a botanical nomenclature standpoint, the tomato is a fruit. However to the layperson (and from a culinary standpoint), the tomato is a vegetable, not a fruit.

Some day you will learn that there are valid definitions to words that widely accepted by the general public, not just esoteric definitions that are espoused by geeks.

Apple Inc. does not consider an iPad a computer. It is categorized separately in the marketing materials. Note that it is not referred to as a computer in their SEC filings nor their technical support documentation.

Thus, the iPad is not a computer to the three groups of people to whom it matters the most: the company who produces it, their shareholders, and their customers.

Of course, if the SEC and FCC's definitions on what a "computing device" is, it wouldn't be the first time that the government can't make up its mind.

;)

iPad Expected to Maintain Position as Tablet Market Leader

Acer chairman JT Wang reportedly claimed recently that Apple's share of the tablet market will eventually stabilize at 20-30%, and while that range would represent a significant decrease from today's levels, it would of course still be a very substantial portion of the overall market.

Somehow I don't see Apple as experience a decrease from todays market levels. Oh wait, this was someone from Acer talking. All I have left to say on what he said is that I have owned a few Acer laptops and I will never own another one. ~laughs~

This is right...

I'm enervated by these predictions and the analysts who blazon such rubbish. Can't these people acquire an actual job? No, they're talentless.

And besides, the iPad is an ersatz tablet. It functions as a media player, not as a computer. Say what you will, but this is the warranted truth.

Man I am so sick of you pathetic trolls...

Really? You think the iPad is only a media player and doesn't function as a computer? Warranted truth you say? Do you even know what a computer is?

Let me ask you this, how exactly does the iPad NOT function as a computer? Seriously, I want to know your definition. I can create documents, slide shows and data charts on the iPad, I can edit my photos with a wide variety of photo apps, as well as my videos, I can create music with a wide variety of music apps, I can even program now using the new Processing app HiperPad, all of this is way more than I could do with my first several computers from the 1980s to 1990s, so how exactly is the iPad not a computer?

You pathetic haters just need to go away already or at least have some real data to back up your bogus claims!

Android phones are selling because they use the marketing power of cellphone carriers. Without the cellphone carriers how will the Android tablet sell to the masses? Google's Nexus One failed for exactly the same reason.

This is a good point. It will come down to the manufacturers. Will Dell or HP take up Android for any of their new devices? And if they do, will they commit to 100% Android, or will we see them all offering multiple options like Dell for instance does with both Windows and Ubuntu? Will HP offer a Palm OS tablet as well as an Android one? They won't make their money off carrier contracts, just purely hardware sales, so what they make and sell will depend on the market. Which means depending on or gambling on the uptake of Windows or Android etc. Cart before the horse gamble..

I see a potential rival to the iPad coming from other closed system hardware from Japan like Sony or Nintendo instead. Releasing pads as powerful gaming platforms and then going from there to add software. Sony also has it's own movie/entertainment division, and e-readers etc. They couldn't do anything much with MP3 players, but can with touch screen devices.

I'll be honest. I have never seen another Tablet anything except for an HP model that California Edison employees were using to take surveys from people at the LA AutoShow. The guy that was surveying me almost punched his tablet because it refuse to cooperate with his stylus pen. Sad.

Apple restrict what applications can you run.

So what? The computers at my bank are all restricted, locked down and locked up. One of the programmers for a bank once told me that any software they developed went through at least a dozen stages of testing, auditing and approval before they got anywhere close to being deployed on the bank's production computers.

Doesn't make those computers not computers.

Many years ago, I got a tour of a large national bank's old computers (early IBM 370s). An iPad is a lot faster and has a lot more memory that those computers that ran an entire bank.

Apple restrict what applications can you run.

Who me? I have a developers certificate, I can compile and run stuff that users can't.

SO wrong in SO many ways... actually, Joe Consumer DOES consider it a computer because it does everything they need it do to (they don't need a full blown desktop just to answer emails, surf the web and youtube and update their Facebook which is what the majority of "Joe Consumers" use their computers for.)

Someday you will learn that no matter how much you try to spin it, your made delusional hypothesis of what "various definitions" of computing is wrong! There is only one definition:

an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

Period. The iPad is a computer, get over it. Again, as I stated to the other troll; I can create documents, slide shows and data charts on the iPad, I can edit my photos with a wide variety of photo apps, as well as my videos, I can create music with a wide variety of music apps, I can even program now using the new Processing app HiperPad, all of this is way more than I could do with my first several computers from the 1980s to 1990s, so how exactly is the iPad not a computer?

Before you accuse someone of being a "troll", why not take a look at your knack for relinquishing vitriol. It's very formidable.

Next, what it isn't can be easily told. Primarily, it does not function as a standalone device. It requires an actual computer to transfer media and so forth. The interface is based not on OS x, but on iOS. By your logic, we can label the iPhone and iPod Touch as computers too, no? So what if you can edit photos on the iPad? You can't upload photos straight form you camera, edit them, nor convert them from RAW to JPEG. You can't research for an essay online while typing your composition out, viewing both apps simultaneously. You can't burn discs, you can't watch DVDs and you can't listen to CDs. I can go on...

I may purchase an ipad in the next year.

But I will use the Kindle app for ipad instead of ibooks.

By definition, the iPod Touch and iPhone are not computers, yet they perform the exact same tasks as the iPad. So what separates the iPad from the iPhone/iPod Touch, and the iPod Touch/iPhone from the computer?

two interesting anomalies in this report.
first, it's odd that apple was able to move from no product offering to 75% of the market in less than 1 year.

Palm did the same thing back in '96 when they were the first one to do pen computing both affordably and with a decent UI. The PalmPilot wiped pen tablets from Casio, Radio Shack, even the Apple Newton, completely off the charts.

second, where are the rest of the offerings in this market space that will erode apple's lead? there are none that currently compare.

It took about 8 years for Microsoft to catch up to Palm, and some of that was Palm self-destructing.

The definition of computer isn't really at issue from what I can see. More the references to it as a media/game player or whatever instead of a computer is simply because they don't use theirs as you use yours. I use Numbers etc myself so I don't see it as just a media player either but more as a mini/mobile computer.

You wonder why you bought the ipad? LOL! If you don't know why you dropped hundreds of dollars on a piece of tech then I don't feel the need to even carry on with you. I haven't heard something so freaking stupid in a long time.

Ipad is a computer. The moment you turn on the device it computes just by powering on.

Thanks a lot for calling me stupid. I bought into the hype thinking it could replace my laptop, but in the end it doesn't. That is the reason why sometimes I wonder why I bought it. With that said I do enjoy using it more then my iPod Touch and I like the bigger screen when I use it as a remote for iTunes.

Whether or not the iPad is an actual computer depends on your definition of a computer. A 1970's large LED calculator could be a computer. A stand alone Blu-ray player could be a computer... anything with any sort of processor could be a computer. I think the difference is if the iPad is considered to be in the same class as other traditional "Personal Computers" like Macs or PCs. I don't think it is.

...So what if you can edit photos on the iPad? You can't upload photos straight form you camera, edit them, nor convert them from RAW to JPEG...

You can directly upload pictures to your iPad from your camera. You just need the camera kit. I don't know about the RAW format, I will need to try it out (It is just a matter of software. If you can't do it today, you will be able to do it soon.)

You can't connect a PC or a Mac to the internet without some kind of computer to connect it to. The computer may be in the next room or it could be on the other side of the planet.

Edited to say, "Yes, the iPad does support Raw formats."

you can't watch DVDs and you can't listen to CDs.
I can almost understand missing DVD playback (I haven't bought a DVD in a few years, but that's mostly through Netflix. Since they put a lot of stuff online I haven't had anything out in months), but CDs? Seriously? :p
