I have already played with an iPad twice at my local BestBuy.(pre-rdered 3G). Got my cousin to come with me the second time and played the Plants vs Zombies demo for almost half an hour.
We both agree the iPad is very light........compared to hauling around a LAPTOP computer!! ;)

Guy's get off the workout comments (although everyone needs to). I lift weights 5 times a week for 45 to 60 minutes, run 40+ miles a week and have 5 to 7% body fat. I also think it's a little on the heavy side. However it's weight is directly related to the large "gas tank" it has. While I would like it to come in under 1lb I would not be willing to trade .5lb for less battery time.

Seriously?

A little on the heavy side? It's 1 and a half freaking pounds. Think about it.

In your case, I think the iPads "heaviness" is more psychological. I lift 2 times a week for 45 to 60 minutes a day, run as much as I need to feel proud of myself, and I could care less about measuring my body fat in fear of disappointment. I find the iPad to be of perfect weight. You men are really beginning to disappoint. No wonder more lesbians are starting to appear.

LMAO!!!!!

As someone who does serious weight training (and an ACE certified Personal Trainer) I know weights.;) Oddly I just weighed mine (32GB WiFi) and it came in at 687 grams or 1.82 lbs. Looks like my iPad need to hit the running trail a few times with me and cut down on the cheeseburgers and fries.:D

What do you lift? The empty water bottles people leave behind? Seriously, it can't be much if ONE POUND and a half is "a little on the heavy side".

It's not heavy. I'll echo whoever said that normal books often weigh more than it, so use it like you would a book. Do you read a book with one hand out? No, set it on your lap.

I'd love to see some people here join a gym, and I'm not even trying to be rude, but the comments here are very saddening. A pound and a half...

"Hi, I'd like to join your gym."
"Great! Glad to have you. Do you have any experience with weight lifting or anything?"
"Well, I AM an iPad owner!"
"… What?"

I think it's a bit insulting to tell people to go the gym if they think 1.5 pounds is heavy. It is actually a very important point for a device that is supposed to be handheld. Maybe the adults amongst us can remember how heavy phones were in the past. Yes, obviously we could lift them but they were a bit of a pain when lugging them round all day.

For me weight is a major issue as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I have problems with my grip. I can struggle just to read a magazine sometimes. Touch screen is fantastic for me as using a mouse can cause me pain over a long period.

How do people tend to use it? Do you tend rest it against something whilst using it? I haven't seen one yet as I'm form the UK.

687 grams = 1.5145757 pounds.
I think you meant that is was 1 pound 8 ounces +.
Remember, 16 ounces in a pound.

Great illustration of how the perception of weight is very much off - I just weighed an 800 page cooking book, came out to 4.8 pounds. That's over 3x the weight. Then I weighed a 250 page softcover, but robust book with good paper quality. It came out to 2lbs. Both these books were very close to the height and width of the iPad.

It feels heavier than it looks, that is for sure. But in practice, Esp if you use it in the same manner as a book you use for several hours, it is far more ergonomic. You're not gonna be holding a book in one hand for hours, why would you try it with the iPad? Because it's supposed to be a "large iPod touch."?

Hold on there Mr. illustrator. You're a great illustration of half baked information on internet forums. A cookbook is a pretty poor benchmark. If it's like some of my wife's cookbooks, the form factor is a lot bigger than your average hardcover novel. And cookbooks usually have high density paper to support color glossy photos of the food. I don't know about you but I know of no one who sits down to read a cookbook for a couple of hours. I'd also like to know what sort of scale you have handy that's capable of accurately measuring in the 1-5 lbs range. If you're using a bathroom scale, that's a big fail.

Go get a hardcover novel of say 800 -1000 pages, not a textbook, not a cookbook, not a coffee table book of Tahiti photos. Now weigh it on a postal scale and tell me it weighs 4.8 lbs.

I'll offer the benchmark of Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. It's something we had handy hanging around the house. Standard hardcover novel size pages and novel paper quality with a written page count of 870 plus some lead-in and blank pages at the end that equate to about 896 real pages worth of paper. Tell me that book weighs 5 lbs. Amazon lists the shipping weight at 2.6 lbs and that would include packaging. I'm betting the real weight is just over 2 lbs.

Back to drawing class for you professor!

Wait til the wifi version comes out... Its going to weigh 0.1 lbs more...

but yea its a little heavy :)

The iPad weighs the same as a McDonald's Quarter Pounder and large coke. Most Americans have no problem lifting that... Maybe the iPad will be good for you.
:p

It is called a 'quarter pounder' for a reason... it weighs.. wait for it a 'Quarter' of a 'pound'. So you a basically saying the coke weighs 1.25 pounds or the weight of 5 burgers. That must be one Big coke?

Trying to be funny yes but maybe use a food that does not have its weight in its name next time? lol

It's hard to say what qualifies as heavy for a new type of device like this. At first, I mostly compare it to an iPhone. I use and hold it the same way, thus, it is a huge weight change. In terms of a laptop, this is incredibly light, making it easy to transport and pull out, but with a laptop, you normally don't hold it for a long period of time. Still, most the time I'll be resting it in some way, on a table, lap, stomach. Even then, the thinness can be a double edge sword unless you balance it just right on you. I've had the official Apple iPad case on since I bought mine. That case adds even thinner edges where the material comes together. While soft at first glance, it can get uncomfortable after a while when rest it on you or continuous brushing against your hands when playing games or supporting the weight.

When I was standing in that launch day line outside the Apple Store, an employee brought one out to us to play with while we waited to go in and pick our reserved iPads up. What struck me was how much lighter it was than I had imagined it would be. I expected it to feel heavier, so I will always think it's very light.

4 oz burger + 20 oz coke = 24 oz or 1.5 lbs.

(and yes, 20 fl oz of coke weighs 20 oz)

Yes, I stand corrected. I miss read my calculation. Must have lifted too many 1/2 filled water bottles at the gym today (and I also lifted my iPad twice).

4oz for the Quarter Pounder is for the meat only (pre cooked), After cooking it would be about 3.5 oz. Add 14 grams of fat (mayo dressing), about 84 grams of bread (does a QP have lettuce and tomato?) and you have over 1/2lb. Also I believe that 20oz of Coke would weigh more than 20oz since the sugar adds weight to the water content of the Coke.

in England we measure our drinks in mls, and our Large is 500mls 0.5 litres. Pretty sure it weighs less then a pound, not sure though.

We in the US measure by volume by the ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon and litter. The confusing part is we also use ounce as a weight measurement (1/16 of a pound). 1 liquid ounce of pure water = 1 ounce of weight.

Trick question:

Which weighs more: a pound of gold or a pound of feathers?
