my point was that the research you are doing would have been more helpful prior to purchasing, not after, since it seems like it's not the device for you.

And I disagree, there is not even a sub-forum for this type of topic, so we have to go through the process of using the terrible search feature on a VBulletin based forum ( It really is bad, I own a forum that runs on it ) to get highly varied answers that sometimes give *CLEAR* examples of how to's but most often are more like, "Yep, it's great braah, I can get lots done on it...prolly depends on what you want to do with it"....pretty damn useless...

Honestly, to get the answers I have gotten on here, it has taken me no less that 10 X the amount of time that I normally have to go through to get anything concise.

Something to consider when you go saying that some of us are not doing research...

Just sell the damn thing already....

Really, and where do you normally go to get your info?

I'm not disputing that on MacRumors you often get lots of uninformative posts before you get any useful info, but that's just the nature of this forum. You can't just waltz in here and expect a forum to behave the way you want it to -- just like you can't expect a device to always behave 100% the way you want it to. In both cases, the solution is, if something isn't working for you, look elsewhere. There are tons of other Mac and iPad related forums you could try. And for your portable computing needs, there are laptops. If you go through them all and find that none suits you 100% (and in life, what does, really?), you've just got to find something that comes closest to what you want, even if it isn't a 100% fit, and learn to live with it.

Have you suggested such a sub-forum to the site admins?

I think there IS a subforum for "this kind of topic," and it's called "Help and Tips."

Really, we can't have subfoums for every single special interest, that would be a total mess!

I don't think there's a need for a sub forum.

But maybe a stickied thread somewhere for "Ipad and Doing Work" or something like that were people can discuss how they use their iPads for work, work based apps, people considering an iPad for work uses can ask questions etc.

If it gets overwhelmed, the maybe a subforum is needed, but I'd think a stickied thread would get the job done.

Could be here in the main iPad forum for most visibility. Or maybe in the Apps forum.

Not everyone's work is the same. It works fine for me.

And I agree...sell your ipad already. Enough.

Apple's software will NEVER allow the iPad to be what it could be. There are many "work arounds" to some of the stuff you want to do but to me the iPad is nothing more than an Internet Cruising Device.

You desktop and laptop have nothing to worry about:eek:

Since you can see the future, maybe You should run Apple.

I agree, a $829 maxed out ipad 2 3g 64GB vs. a loaded MBA 11 inch ($1399). The $470 price difference makes the 11 inch much more attractive especially if you intend to do real work.

The iPad 2 (at it's stage in it's developmental cycle) is really just a luxury toy. Great for "casual consumer consumption" like book reading, web surfing/email, minor games, movies.

But if you are wanting to do real work and still really want the iPad, I'd suggest you save yourself money and (IF you can afford it) just get the $499 base wifi ipad and get a MBA.

The onlt problem with the Air solution is the lack of 3G. I know you can use a hotspot of USB modem, but that is an extra step. Having 3G built in to the iPad is great and would be a step up for the Air.

FWIW

Having used it for about a week now, the cost / benefit ratio of the iPad-2 for what I need to do with it is strongly pointing to us keeping it. I also have it on good authority that Apple is under a lot of pressure to make at least enough improvements in iOS to get this device to where a lot of us need it to be.

Tell Steve I said "hi"...

Really depends on what your use may be. For photographers I don't think it is quite ready for prime time, but people have used it for portfolio showing.

I can use it a lot for work, from reading and highlighting PDFs, to writing letters, to answering emails, to researching on westlaw/lexis, to access work view remote access. Does it replace my computer? No, but it come closer than I ever thought I device I originally bought for entertainment would.
