This is a great Thread.
Thank you all for the info posted, it's really interesting to see the differences between Airlines and Procedures.
I pretty much expected a whole new set of strict procedures for the iPad, being the introduction of the iPad in the cockpit sort of a revolutionary one in the utmost conservative environment of flying professionally.

I am just surprised, given the topic, by the low amount, if any, of European people participating in it. I was just thinking that I have not heard of any EASA/EU-OPS/JAA Airline that has seriously considered the iPad as a real alternative to the Jepp bag, have you?

Mini is embraced by Aviation :D:D:apple:

Team ForeFlight says:
Our take on the iPad mini? We are fans. ForeFlight Mobile runs beautifully on the mini. It runs cooler and has a great feeling "slate" anodized aluminum case. Pilots in smaller cockpits - like an RV or even an F/A-18 - will find the mini easier to wield, easier to mount, and much less of a space invader.

GA is the reason I kept sending the iPad back, "well maybe this time I can make it work". Nope. Just too unwieldy even with the funky handstrap I made out of gaffer tape attached to the back.

The mini should be perfect. My cellular order finally shipped.

Your welcome! :D

The use of EFB is under the USA FAR rules 91.21 and 22.925.
The FAA is perfectly OK with consumer devices as supplementary devices, not primary.
In flying, one is expected to use all devices to confirm you are flying safely.

Not heard much of airlines outside of USA taking advantage of iOS, but the British military is.

USAF is on a 6 month fly with both iPad and Paper pubs. Its just for testing purposes, but once everything is cleared through, whether it takes the full 6 months or more, they will be ipad only.

thisi for pilot and non pilot crew positions.

my own concoction :D :

iPad happy?

RV-6 I think.

I have both..Since I've got the IPAD panel mounted I like that better strictly because of the size. I flew with the mini alone and it's fine, just a bit smaller.
I'm going to use the mini on the left to run a wifi gopro mounted in the wing landing light bay.

Since FAA is hyper cautious about iPad's in aviation, progress is slow, but MR has a nice update!

A Look at American Airlines' iPad Electronic Flight Bag.

Just a note:

Those paper charts and books (AF/D) must be replaced 4 to 5 times a year! Yes, the paper gets outdated very fast.

We don't use AFDs, but the "replacement / paper update schedule" is far worse than 4/5 times per year. It's more like massive paper updates every two weeks. An epic waste of time and resources.

The AA iPad program is still in development and from what I gather it'll b a while as they are in the testing phase using pilots personal iPads who volunteer.

This could be so easy but the airlines and FAA will always find a way to bog it down. I another iPad program has been under development for around 2 years and there still hasn't been ONE single paper book removed from any air crew flight bag. So now lugging around 40 pounds of book + iPad.
