I know im about a year and a half to late with his comment but i just got the ipad now so its new to me. its a whole lot heavier then I expected. I used to hear people complain about the weight and think i guess they dont read IT books because they are twice the size and about 4x as heavy. I was kinda wrong though it gets tiring holding it after awhile.

I used to be dead against a 7 - 8.9 inch device but after holding the ipad it is indeed a bit large. it doesnt seem that large in the ads though. However my opinion has changed and a slightly smaller ipad may not be such a bad thing. i dont think it will hurt the 5 inch screens of the ipod touch. it could be called an ipad mini or something.

off so play with my ipad some more. still cant figure out how to create folders...

Then sell it.

Hans and Franz would say the iPad is not made for girly men. :D

"Don't buy it," "join a gym," "don't hold it that way."

Really, people? So much for "I don't have to change myself to fit a product, it just fits me."

I just wonder how people ever managed to read books before the iPad; there's plenty that weigh as much (as the OP said). Hold it like a book, not a phone or whatever.

I don't understand the concept of holding it. I am laying down, the iPad is laying down in front of me, just like a book would be. When I am sitting, the iPad is on the desk or the arm of the couch, my leg, ect... This is not the first post on this subject, I still haven't figured out what in the hell are yall are doing. Are you trying to hold it while standing and riding on a crowded subway train or what ? Please explain, cause I very rarely hold it, so I never find it heavy. I am afraid I am using it incorrectly, and I would like the full iPad experience.

All sarcasm aside, I often wonder the same thing. I can't quite fathom how people are holding it to perceive it as being heavy.

back to sarcasm...... It's not so much a case as having to change your self t fit the device, you need to change your self for health reasons! Do not attempt to any any form of grocery shopping your self, you'll die!! :D

They didn't, this is why books remain on the shelves at most libraries ;)

I would agree with quite a few comments on here, i think the size and weight isnt anything really to moan about! no doubt Apple brought it out this size so they could easy slip an Ipad Nano into the equation in the future.

It isnt heavy unless your weak!

Unfortunately, you don't speak for anybody but yourself. Apple sacrificed ease of use to make the iPad nice and shiny, just like how the Apple fans like it. Frankly, however, they've gone too far and made it 1.5 pounds. Are they nuts? I don't care how strong you are, 1.5 pounds become tiring to hold in certain postures after an hour.

I am in disbelief that there are people like you who actually try to defend Apple despite them making such a big stupid mistake. But watch them make it lighter for the 2G and have millions of people going "oh what a revolutionary move, making a device that you thought couldn't get any lighter LIGHTER!" as if there aren't hundreds of thousands if not millions of people out there that whine about this daily.

... 1.5 pounds become tiring to hold in certain postures after an hour.

Yep, I agree. But why stand up on one leg and hold in one hand, with arms fully extended for a hour ? How do you hold a college text book, or any other hardcover book for that matter ? Why do people INSIST on holding in in an uncomfortable position, and then whine about it ? How are you trying to hold it ? How do you hold a five year old 4 and a half pound Windows Tablet ? I dont get it. Will at least one of the whiners please explain to me what they are doing and why are they trying to do it that way ?

Use the thing like you would a hard cover book. No one bitches about the weight of books on hardcoverbookrumors.com.

Hard cover books don't weigh as much...

Again with the "lol its ur problem, not the device's"

Will you fanboys ever admit that maybe there's a problem somewhere if so many people are complaining about the iPad's weight? Probably not. Not until the iPad 2 comes in a revolutionary 1 pound anyway.

What? You're saying Apple could have made it lighter, but didn't, so that it could be 'nice and shiny' instead? That isn't very convincing.

I too don't care how strong someone else is, since any weight at all becomes tiring to hold in certain postures after an hour. The iPad can be held in ways which aren't as tiring as others. I have no idea how the people complaining are holding it - out at arms length? Up in one hand and poking at it with the other? I don't even hold comic books that way. Anything of that weight and shape is usually propped on a desk, my lap, or cradled.

"Big stupid mistake"? What could they have done to make it lighter? Drill some holes in the middle of it? And there aren't millions of people whining about this daily, come on.

I can't wait until Apple makes the iPad lighter. I can already hear people saying "See! This is an admission from Apple that they did it wrong the first time around, a total backtrack apology for their Big Stupid Mistake".

They could have not made it out of aluminum. Opening the iPad, the internals are insanely tiny. It's basically an iPhone coupled with a big screen hardware-wise. The aluminum casing is an example of aesthetics over practicality. Again, stop being such a closed-minded fanboy and realize that not everybody sits at a table in Starbucks. It's meant to be used everywhere.

I like how there are practically hundreds of people like you on this forum that are so apologetic for all the stupid mistakes that Apple made as if they're anything close to a perfect company. I seriously don't know why I bother arguing in the first place.

Not make it out of aluminum, sure. What do you suggest they use instead of a metal that is: easily machined with a low cost and a high strength-to-weight ratio? Maybe an expensive polycarbonate could trim an ounce. What a stupid mistake by Apple! I suppose my skepticism makes me a closed-minded fanboy, lmao. I love the Starbucks reference and the idea that what I've said in this thread makes me an apologist in an army of hundreds, white-knighting Apple at every opportunity. Where do you come up with this stuff?

Hard plastic would do the job fine as well. And it would trim far more than an ounce. Stop being an idiot.

Oh, mKTank has done stress analysis on the iPad! He knows Apple can mold millions of backs to the tolerances they want and have it fit the glass without any trouble, no distortion from cooling when it comes out of the mold, no long-term heat problems during use, and have the kind of rigidity the iPad needs, with all the torsional loads and the rest of it accounted for, at a weight and cost that make a significant difference over aluminum. Clearly this poster has years of experience in engineering and manufacturing, grasping all the technical issues that need to be addressed. They just need to ring up the store for some "hard plastic" and get going, wonderful.

Ive used the iPad out and about all day, using it in both hands, never once found it too heavy.

Someone must be like Mr.Burns.

I just looked. the most recent Stephen King book, "Full Dark, No Stars" is 1.4lbs.

I know for a fact that my History of Design in Advertising book for school is slightly under 3lbs.

It's kinda heavy if you're not used to carrying around stuff like a large purse or briefcase or a child. But, this is just the first iPad, I'm pretty sure as technology and price get closer together, the iPad will get thinner and lighter...just like all other technology. :)

Ding...ding...ding.

Truer words have not been written. I have said from the start that the iPad is too heavy and too clunky. Its simply not made to be held for very long. A flat back might help, but the weight of the battery is the bulk of it, so I dont see it getting much lighter without sacrificing battery life.

Still, I do expect Apple will lower the weight at some point...dont think that will be Gen 2, but I could be surprised.

Nobody doubts that the iPad will get lighter. However, we have some people saying the current iPad's weight is a result solely of aesthetic considerations ('nice and shiny') and that the aluminum is to blame for the weight. Other people think that aluminum is probably a good choice of material (and haven't heard a convincing alternative), and not the major contributor to the device's weight; and that Apple's use of aluminum probably has a lot to do with manufacturing, technological, durability, and economic considerations. The use of aluminum may change in the future as those conditions change. I think this latter position is more reasonable and haven't heard a good argument otherwise.

Also, there are ways the current iPad can be held comfortably. As its weight changes, so too will the comfortable ways one can use it. This isn't a spectacular insight, nor is it something millions should be whining about daily.

Yes. I'm beginning to think people are making complaints like this just for complaining's sake...like a nagging wife who has nothing else to say to her husband so whines about anything and everything. I also think OP's like Acorn here make threads like this too simply pad they're MacRumors résumé...then again we're all probably guilty of this at one point or another.

I'd have to agree with the comments about the "right" case. The iPad in all it's naked glory is a bitch to hang on to with one hand as it's rather slick surfaces leave few options to hang on to. I have the Apple basic case which I really like, and have found several positions I can hold it with one hand and it's not an issue for me to watch a movie, read, surf etc.. for extended periods of time.

It does weigh 1.5 lbs, so yes, at some point it will feel heavy if your extending your arm holding it in certain positions. Finding the right case, made a huge difference for me, although I hate cases on my phone or my iPad they are just to damn slick to hang on to sometimes.

I guess the Dell Duo weighing more than 3.25 lbs is better. I'm not an Apple gambit but seriously, have you ever held a samsung galaxy tab in your hand??? It feels like a kids toy made out of complete plastic.

But I guess they should have designed it better, because now there must be 10million+ iPad owners who hate the iPad they own. Lol

No. The Galaxy Tab is incredibly well built and is indeed quite lighter than the iPad. Apple should learn a thing or two from Sammy when it comes to product weight. All of their products are light as hell (including this Focus I'm typing on) despite being also quite durable and high-specced, even more so sometimes.

The thing is, some people, still these days when they should know better associate weight with quality.

If it's heavy it must be good. Light means cheap.

They even do this with some clocks you buy. Years ago they used to have heavy brass mechanisms, but these days they can have high quality quartz movements instead. Despite this being better, it feels cheap, so they deliberately fit a large lump of metal inside the clock for no other reason than to make it about twice the weight, so people pick it up and think it's better quality as it's heavier.

It's the same with Plastics. We may have 10 million different types of materials that all come under the general banner or plastic. Some very high else cars and other equipment having their old metal parts replaced with high tech modern plastics.

But you say that to most people here and it's oh no, not a cheap plastic. Apple don't do cheap plastic.

Very old fashioned thinking. Heavy and metal = quality.

Indeed. I was blown away at how light the Focus was despite having a bigger screen and a better processor than my iPhone 4. Funnily enough, its also way more durable.
