What's up with Ipod XL?

very disappointed with today's keynote. why does it take Steve-O so long to develop Ipod XL. I had a feeling Apple dev. team went all-out with the Ipad, loaded the thing up with alien's technology; three weeks before Keynote, Steve had a change-of-heart and said "Lets stick to what works... IPOD XL"

Seems like Apple is moving away from the MBA and gave the public a cheaper, less capable replacement.

- another way to make us pay monthly, let's be real, the device isn't that useful if no 3G subscription.

Actually the device doesn't need 3g at all. It is 100% useful without it.

I am not even sure why a lot of people would go for 3G.

I see this being something I mostly use around the house and then light traveling. However things like books and such would already be on there.

This does not scream for 3G like the iphone did. So I think the wifi model will be very popular.

I would like the ability to tether to my iphone but that is it.

iPhone OS is pretty awesome. Being able to expand it to a larger display size is going to allow for some interesting things.

Sites that use flash extensively need to learn to make sites that are available to their users. They are learning this more and more every day. The new standards for imbedded video do not involve Flash. If you know a site that uses flash that you would like to see tell them to update their site. Adobe is not winning this battle.

It's exactly what I thought it would be, and it sucks exactly like I thought it would. Tablets are retarded and all this hype was such BS. The only reason they invented this thing was to get more of your money. It does nothing your iphone or laptop can't do and I prefer typing on my laptop thanks, but I'll keep my 1000 bucks.

I so agree with you! Jobs has lost his touch (pun intended). The iPad is much ado about nothing. No computer OS, no multitasking, too large of a bezel, nothing that screams "a must have". I'll stick with my Touch.

It's too heavy to hold without getting a decent grip, hence the large bezel/handles. It's meant to be hand held primarily.

I've been reading a lot of hate for this iPad thing. Right now I'm going to hold judgement.

First impressions though, I'm struggling to see why I might 'need' one; if those iWorks apps are ok, we could be in business.

For me, if something doesn't immediately scream out to me "this is THE coolest thing ever!", I'm not going to be all that interested down the line in buying said object. This thing isn't pocketable. Game over. I've already got plenty of PC appliances. touch, mifi, netbook, laptop, desktop. I can't see crossing my leg like Jobs to hold the Touch while I look DOWN at my lap at the screen. Very uncomfortable. and for what purpose? I can do many things with my Touch/MiFi. It fits in my pocket. It's color. It's got 3G (via Mifi). It's got several e-reader apps on it. I can play movies, music, check email, cruise the net, and even level a picture with it. Why would I want a device that would live at home mostly, vying for attention with the TV, my PS3, and my various PC's?? Nope, not gonna get it.

Actually the iphone is probably getting multitasking. So when the iphone os updates so does the ipads. And considering they update every summer. The ipad will not be that bad. I don't know why people are trashing this. This may look like its nothing now. But wait til this or next summer. It'll be a BEAST!!!

its got a 80% smaller screen.

the ipad has a 5x bigger screen and only weighs 3 times as much, not to mention it has a form factor that makes utilizing that larger screen pretty useful in a lot of situations.

Someone said this will be a great device that soccer mom's will snap up... well...

There will be no Hulu streaming for the soccer moms, this doesn't support flash. No Pandora playing when they look at recipes because it doesn't support multitasking. No spicy video chat with the husband on his business trip because there is no webcam or iChat either.

I hope/pray that since this "officially" is running iPhone OS 3.2 that there is hope for a major update to allow for flash and multitasking by summer with iPhone OS 4.0 but i have serious doubts about that.

i really would have bet this device would lead the way with OS 4.0 and then iPhone would get it this summer but no...

no multitasking is inexcusable. no webcam hurts a comparison to netbooks and laptops. no flash while a noble idea just creates a feeling of compromise that while tolerable on a small iphone is not tolerable on a bigger device meant to avoid the compromises of the iphone.

Aah bringing old threads back from the grave. Pointless but very entertaining.

I only brought it back due to someone putting it in the discussion under the article from today discussing the increase in production. The iPod thread from 2001 quoted there is hilarious as well

Must admit, I would like the Bezel to be about half what it is.
I don't feel I really need to full area if currently is to hold the device ok.

Ya know, at first I was ticked off that I started reading an ancient thread before I realized it, but this is pretty funny stuff. :p

This is a pretty "classic" quote:
