You mean that GPU it has which the PS Vita portable games console also has.
I have played many a game with ZERO issues on the iPad 3.

Again - its fairly widely said that the iPad 3 is and was one of the worst iPads, in terms of graphical performance, longevity, plus heat/battery/thickness/charging issues.

Why? I've seen so many people claim that with no reasoning. Nothing wrong with the iPad 3. The iPad 3 was a lot more powerful then the iPad 2.

That is false. Sure the iPad 3 may be a great iPad to use, but it is not more powerful that the iPad 2 in real world use, as the Retina display completely kills any advantage, as shown also by the attached benchmarks.

I fairly regularly use an iPad 3 (not my own) and the the level of jittering and UI lag has long been worse than the iPad 2, even back on iOS 6 and 7.

The Mini and Air actually have same number of pixels. The only difference between A8 and A8x is increased graphics performance. But since the mini and the air have the same number of pixels, and the mini has a smaller battery, the battery would drain faster on the mini.

There is a third core in the A8X and a higher clock, so not just graphic performance, though that's certainly a part of it. So, your not getting a third core in the Mini 4 probably for the same reason people didn't get one in the Iphone 6+

The iPad Air 2 seems a lot faster, no doubt. Too bad! The Mini 4 would have been amazing if it really did have the performance of the Air 2.

Either way, the full-size iPad is a bit more fun to me, more entertaining for games, movies, photos and browsing. Even coming from the Mini, I haven't really found myself missing the portability of it. Then again I only use(d) it at home, at lectures or when I travel. That said, the Air 2 is even lighter than the Air I use.

iPad Mini 4 may be a little slower than the Air 2, but as long as it offers all of the same iOS 9 features I think I'll pick the mini up over the air. My iPad 2 has lasted 4.5 years and it's time for something new. I think I prefer the tad smaller screen.

They both have the same CPU, same frequency. They only differ in the number of graphics units (the iPad 3 has twice as many, pushing four times as many pixels, at best this merely compensates for the increased resolution). It also has twice the RAM, again pushing 4x as many pixels. And any graphic related tasks that the CPU has to perform, including reading data from storage, are slower on the iPad 3 because it is the same CPU pushing more pixels.

As others have said, it mostly performed the same as the iPad 2 but was slower in some areas.

Best news in the last week's event.

iPad mini 4 looks solid (with 2GB RAM).

Wish they had A9 like iPad Air 2
, but $100 less A8 looks good enough.

Looks like previous generation iPhone CPU (A8) going to be the new generation iPad mini X and X (A8X) version is going to be on the iPad Air X. looks like a theme.

iPad Air 2 has an A8X processor, not an A9.

And the A8x has three CPU cores whereas the A8 only has two (which was the first time, previously all 'x' processor only had more graphics units and might have been clocked a bit higher).

Mostly yes, but it also has a smaller backlight and the backlight is one of biggest power consumers in those devices as it is something that is always on when [actively] using an iPad (although nothing seems to beat GPS when it comes to power consumption).

iPad 3 is the worst performing tablet after iPad 1.
Sure is more powerful than iPad 2, but has a retina display so it needs to drive all those pixels.
I still use an iPad 3 for my tests, if the app performs well on the iPad 3 I'm sure it will work great on all iPads

Not going to say anymore as I'll be dragging the thread off topic, but needless to say I find all the above incorrect from personal experience, having an iPad 3 in the house that hasn't skipped a beat since launch and played games better than the iPad Mini 2 I had and with a better screen. My personal experience is far far different to what is said on here. Only reason it's slow is thanks to Apple's useless iOS8, it ran fine on the last iOS7.

It seems like they could have added 4 GB of RAM to the mini and people would still not be happy with it...

Any idea when it'll be available on Amazon.com? I have enough gift cards on there saved up to pay about half price for the 64GB version so would like to buy from there.

Why would you dump Air 2 for Mini 4? First I thought for the size, but then you're also interested in the Pro!
I'm just curious, if I may ask why?
For some reason, the air/air 2 size just isn't for me. I want more, but then i want more portability. I love the mini for on the go, i may get one just for that purpose, albeit a cheaper option. The pro will satisfy the longing for a bigger screen. I clearly have issues...lol.

Do you really believe your experience to be representative? An A7 running a 1.3 GHz and having a two generations newer GPU being slower than an A5x running at 1 GHz? Geekbench is listing these scores (iPad 3 vs iPad mini 2):
Single core: 259 vs 1376
Multi core: 489 vs 2477

This is why the iPad 3 is good, it had the X monicor chip in it that makes a lot of difference, I think the iPad 4 had it too? It's just profits that prevent the X chip going into all iPads it seems?

It's not just profits, it's physics. The X variants have always had more GPU cores, and in the case of the A8X (and possibly A9X), more CPU cores as well. There are greater power (and associated heat, battery) requirements in the more powerful chips.

Yeah but the iPad Mini is still big enough to contain the heat and the chip size, it's hardly that much size difference. Inside the iPads are mostly battery's. They could fit them if they wanted to.
