Apple today announced that the iPad mini 4 now offers more capacity for the same price. The 128GB model with Wi-Fi now starts at $399, which was previously the price for the 32GB model with Wi-Fi, which has been discontinued. A cellular model with 128GB of storage is also available for $529.

Apple has also introduced a new low-cost 9.7-inch iPad and discontinued the iPad mini 2 as part of its tablet lineup refresh. Japanese website Mac Otakara had claimed that Apple would release a 7.9-inch iPad Pro, but other analysts had disagreed, and it turns out the rumor was indeed incorrect, at least for now.

The newly priced iPad mini 4 is available now on Apple.com in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray with next-day shipping.

Person walks into a store...
Sees a big iPad for $329
Seems a smaller iPad for $399, with a slower processor, but with 4x the storage...

That seems confusing

Also disappointing as I'm a huge fan of the mini form factor. Hopefully this is just to make room for the "Pro" lineup with 7.9,10.5,12.9

Seriously starting to hate this company. I don't need an iPad because it's a **** product but seriously.... when was this last updated?

Thanks for extra storage after 2 years and same price? They really think they have no competition. At least put in new chips in these things. Is this their new trend weren't they selling a 2012 MacBook Pro for 5 years never updating it a few months ago

They may be rationalizing their product mix in anticipation of a bigger rollout later. Apple has been criticized lately for offering too many products.

I agree, except you can indeed get the bigger iPad in the 128GB storage option for $30 more than the mini. I just don't know why they couldn't do a 32GB mini for $299, surely they'd still make a little coin on it.

Kind of sad... I had hoped for an iPad Mini Pro, or at least an iPad Pro Mini.

Sooo...we have.

iPad Mini 4 - $399 (Starts at 128GB)
iPad 9.7" - $329 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 9.7" Pro - $599 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 12.9" Pro - $799 (Starts at 32GB)

Oh come on Apple you can't even update the chip? The A8 is only a 15% improvement over the A7 compared to the A9 which was a much bigger improvement over the A8. That's nice that you dropped the price but it's just not worth it as an update to the Mini 2. The 128gb cellular model (the one I'd buy) is $530. Cheaper than other iPads for sure, but ridiculous for 2 year old tech. I'd happily spend $800 plus for an updated version, even just a chip bump.

I guess it's time to start researching Samsung tablets.

You think they actually have competition in tablets? Have you actually used an Android tablet lately?

Sounds like this is probably the end of the road for the iPad mini. I can see Apple keeping it around for a while for those who really love the product, kind of like they did with the old iPod classic. But, I doubt the mini will receive another substantial update in the future.

The 9.7" iPad pricing is odd compared to the 9.7" Pro model. They should had dropped the price on that as well.. $50 would suffice.

I was really looking forward to what Apple planned on doing today, but looks like it's nothing to see here.

Looks like they were scared to offer an iPad mini 32GB at $299. Why? Possibly to get people used to the idea that the 9.7" model is the new "mini" and that the real mini will be discontinued soon...

P.S.: they also stopped selling the iPad mini 2.

That's very disappointing if that is the case. I, along with many others I'm sure, really love the 7.9" size of the Mini. At least the Mini 4 will be supported software wise for several more years.

The iPad Mini 2 was discontinued as well.

I can understand this.

iOS 10 makes the iPad Mini 2 unusable for Safari. The lag is horrible, especially when scrolling through MR homepage. The typing lag is very annoying. I wish I could down-grade to iOS 9, or 8 even.

I am sure it is much easier to discontinue it, rather than fix the iOS for it.
