Person walks into a store...
Sees a big iPad for $329
Seems a smaller iPad for $399, with a slower processor, but with 4x the storage...

That seems confusing

Also disappointing as I'm a huge fan of the mini form factor. Hopefully this is just to make room for the "Pro" lineup with 7.9,10.5,12.9

I agree. The mini format is great. I used to have the 1st gen, but since it got updated to iOS10 it became unusable. I sold it. Waiting to see a 7.9" Pro version. 4 speakers and support for the Apple pencil.

I was hoping that Apple would either give the mini a spec bump or reduce the price a bit more. I'm returning to work from maternity in a week and I'll need a small tablet for my commute. The mini 2 is too old at this point and is unlikely to be supported for much longer. I've been looking at the Tab S2 which is a bit cheaper than the mini 4 but it won't fit into my Apple ecosystem and it's support is likely to be even worse than the mini 2.

Oh well I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy the mini 4. I didn't want a pro model, just an updated processor would have been good for me.

With the mini 4 no longer the lowest price iPad, it really seems like they do acknowledge there is a contingent that likes the device purely for the form factor (like many of us here.) I would hope they do take that to heart and come out with a Pro in this size. Even at the same price as the next 9.7", I would still buy a mini pro. I love the size of this thing.

Keep your eye on the Apple refurb page. Some mini 4s were listed this week, though they aren't in stock at the moment.

Just a point of interest. We just bought a mini4 because we had a mini1 that was dying. Husband is loving it because it's so much faster. But as I was helping him with the settings, I noticed it came with iOS 9.3.1. First time I've gotten a supposedly new system with an older iOS. Maybe they're clearing out old stock? It wasn't a refurb.

I'm into iPads for reading iBooks, web browsing, and streaming/watching movies.

While I'm sure some people really dig the storage bump, I'm mostly into speed/performance.

I hope they bump those specs soon so I can pick up a much needed update to my iPad 2 and I like these smaller form factors.
