As far as I can tell, this is the cheapest 128GB iOS device ever. If you need a portable media center with local storage, it's a decent choice.
6th Gen iPod Touch with 128GB of storage is the same price, and has the same processor. Only plus side is that the iPad Mini 4 is bigger.

That is such a bizarre pricing lineup. Why no $299 iPad mini4 with 32GB?

And nearly $300 to jump from a 9.7" to a 9.7" Pro? Is that really worth it to anyone?
Basically twice the price! I'm confused...

The only thing that could make any sense is a 10.5" imminently and a price drop of 9.7 pro to be competitive. Nearly double is a tough pill to swallow. But so is mini4

This air2.5 is becoming the obvious model to get if getting an iPad with no requirements and from a pricing
Perspective.

Is the only difference on the "pro" model the pen support? $300 is still a ridiculous markup unless maybe it comes with the pen, but even then.

Since Air 2 has 2GB of RAM I think (and hope) it will be supported for a long time.
I wouldn't buy an Air or a Mini 2 refurbished today, but Air 2 is still great

The Air 2 is still plenty capable and mine runs just as efficient since I purchased it. If it was slower, I would have upgraded to the Pro by now. But at this point, it's been stellar in performance.

I don't think these new iPads have the TrueTone display, and they definitely don't have the smart connector (which we will see shortly is going to connect to much more than just the keyboard).

TBH the only reason I upgraded to the pro 9.7 from the Air 2 was that I wanted the stereo speakers and could sell my Air 2 for a great price.

I lost track of what iPad models they have and what version they're on and dont really care. I have an older mini which is barely fast enough to web surf and am in no hurry to replace it... unless they create a model with I/O that runsMacOS

Still longing for a Mini with Pencil support.
It's the best e-reader. It would be the best easy doodling tablet as well.

I thought people here had been whining for years on how Apple shouldn't offer mere 8 and 16GB options (would now be equivalent to 32 and 64 with inflation). And the high entry price for iPads is now adjusted upwards as with the ones for the Macbook Pros...

Stereo speakers is a great feature. I had zero interest in the Apple Pencil. If you found a great price on the Pro, then I would say it would be worth it. But in terms of speed, they are similar, with the Pro having the edge at about 19% faster.

Seems like an odd choice. The iPad mini is a great tablet for kids at the 32GB price point. They would sell oodles of minis at $249-279 for 32GB.
Depends on the age of the 'kid'. My 3 and 5 year old have Amazon Fire Tablet Kid editions ($90), which include 2 year 'no questions asked' warranties, and access to Amazon's curated kid content with lots of parental controls for amount of time they can use the tablet each day, time of the day they can use the tablet, type of content they can access etc... I can't imagine Apple ever going after that market, but if they did they would shift a ton of devices...

This move confuses me so much. Why not just move the price down to $299 for entry level 32gb?

And if Apple plans to continue the smaller line I think they should have given a similar update as the 9.7"

This is what I'm hoping for the lineup to look like in the coming few months
iPad 7.9 (2017): $299
iPad 9.7 (2017): $329
iPad Pro 9.7 (2016): $499
iPad Pro 10.5 (2017): $599
iPad Pro 12.9 (2015): $699
iPad Pro 12.9 (2017): $799

yea tempting - will wait for the refurbs at $319-$329

Apple was selling the iPad mini 4 128GB cellular refurbished as recently as a coupe of weeks ago for $529. This is now the new MSRP. If they list any more refurbs of this model, I'd expect them to be sold for $429.

Like the 160GB iPod classic, we have seen the last ipad mini model we will ever see. History by 2018.

Cheapest mini is now more expensive than cheapest iPad - must be some kind of new Apple logic here... weird...

Heartbroken! No upgrade or update at all for the Mini! Apple just discontinued the 32GB storage model and left with only 128GB model! No new memory or size or CPU either! Still uses the old LPDDR3 memory inside! Nice spin by Apple marketing however! It so sad!

I don't know why someone would assume that just because it's smaller it follows it would have to be less expensive, unless there is some other rationale you have elaborated on?

The cheapest mini now costs more than the cheapest full size iPad.

That's a product linup failure.

Not at equivalent storage capacities (which at least used to matter). The cheapest iPad with 128GB is $429. The 128GB mini is now priced at $399. That may be not as much less as might be expected, but it is still less.

Curious that they would start the mini at $399 and the 9.7" at $329.
Can only conclude that the mini doesn't have too much more of a future.

Traditionally smaller technology is more expensive, although with a tablet what offsets that is the size of the screen. Of course that's also changed in that the plus iphones are more expensive, but have more features/resolution, etc.

I see some spots where a new model can be introduced, it almost seems like that's what Apple is doing.

that is completely irrelevant

someone who is looking to just get into the market, with the "cheapest" option doesn't necessary look at the storage options first. they look at price first.

So right now, if you wanted to get the Cheapest 7" iPad, and you don't care about storage, the only option is now $399.

for a price conscientious family for example, who is just looking at the cheapest barrier of entry for buying their kids iPads, the iPad mini is now a terrible option.
