It is more so the implementors more than Google. Android 7.0 , Nougat, introduced split window support.

https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/multi-window.html

Part of the Android problem is the relatively slower adoption of the features rolled out by Google in Android. (e.g., tablet vendors still shipping Android 6 well into the 7.0-7.1 era and virtually no upgrades over most of the market. ). The Chromebooks are boosting the "large screen" market in a serious way that vendors like Microsoft, Adobe, etc. are probably going to be hesitant to ignore.

We'll see what Android 'O' brings in a couple months. At least the Android core developers at Google probably have broad access to the Pixel C to target with test builds and quick usability checks. 'O' will be the second iteration with the solid foundation to do development on.

If Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab S3 isn't priced 'crazy' then it should get some traction. The Tab 10.1 is probably going to feel some pain with the iPad now priced at $329 ( versus 10.1 list price of $350. )

In short, it is more for in the camp of the implementors (of hardware and software) getting their stuff together than it is Google not being competitive on foundation.

But at that point it really doesn't matter as either the product exists and is used widely or it isn't. It doesn't matter who is at fault there, consumers only care about what they can use.

DONT GET THIS IPAD!!!

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/apple-announces-latest-ipads-270-150000223.html

"If you're someone who really digs the Apple Pencil, the brand's tablet stylus, we have some bad news: This new iPad does not work with it. For that, you’ll need to spring for the more expensive iPad Pro."

But .. but .. what if you don't care about the Apple Pencil?

"Don't buy this iPad!!!" is an ignorant thing to say as not everyone cares about using the pencil.

We needed a new mini, and was waiting for a new version. Husband is on a mini 1 and safari crashes all the time. Its back at ios 7 something.

We have a mini 2 that i updated to ios 10, but it has something wrong with wifi, it keeps disconnecting, so that one is sitting in a cabinet somewhere waiting for a use case :)

Ive got a mini4 and it still works great. So husband decided to get the mini 4 as well, since he cant easily hold the 9.7 size. Didn't want to wait for a possible hardware upgrade that might not ever happen. (If there is one I'll get it )
First time he's gotten a new ipad-he usually just gets my handmedowns. Disappointed but oh well....

In the market for an iPad mini 4. But with today's update I think I'll look for a 32gb on clearance. Just don't need the 128gb storage space.

Right, right...people don't need facetime anymore, so they should remove camera (front and back).

Point being: we are at ipad pro standards (meaning having ability to write with pencil).

So why not include that rather than cheaping people out?

Because that's not how things work? If you want the features, pay for them. Apple pencil support is not a requirement to all, so subtracting it and keeping the price down works for others.

Oh rly, please do tell how things work.

Oh rly, please do tell how things work.

Well, it starts off with companies wanting to make more money so they add features and charge a higher price or subtract features and charge a lower price. Then folks like you come to internet forums and complain that "how dare they charge this amount!" and then folks like me say "nobody forces you to buy it".

You can dislike it all you want, that's just how the world you live in works.

Edit: Oh and then I just leave this discussion because it's pointless. Don't like the world? Figure out what you need to do to change it .. I don't care.

Sooo...we have.

iPad Mini 4 - $399 (Starts at 128GB)
iPad 9.7" - $329 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 9.7" Pro - $599 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 12.9" Pro - $799 (Starts at 32GB)

Lol so strange seeing the smallest iPad being the only one with 128GB base / only option.

Could they really not do something like

iPad 7.9" - $249 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 9.7" - $329 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 9.7" Pro - $599 (Starts at 32GB)
iPad 12.9" Pro - $799 (Starts at 32GB)

There's this term called, "buyer's advocate."

I think 128GB is very generous for an iPad since they are shipping a $1,800 MacBook Pro with 256GB in the year 2017...or about the size of 5 PS4 games.

"Japanese website Mac Otakara had claimed that Apple would release a 7.9-inch iPad Pro, but other analysts had disagreed, and it turns out the rumor was indeed incorrect, at least for now."

At least for now? Am I missing something? I'd they announced a new mini today, then the rumor was correct. Period.

This is what really pisses me off about Apple. You have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for more storage or memory. No SD slot.

That is unless you wait for a while, and then they offer more memory or storage, lower the price, and call it an upgrade or a refresh. Insulting.

Personally, anything with less than 128gb of storage is useless.

I kind of reckon u need more storage on a tablet than a phone.

At one point 16 Gig was enough, but now any capacity lower than the standard today its just "not worth it"

I only got 12 gig , and 32Gig because i was forced to, as Apple never offered 16 Gig anymore.. If it wasn't for that, i would still get 16..

They do. Chromebooks are kicking Apple's butt. All the new 2017 models are going to be able to run Android apps too. ( although any sane school or business will lock that down if education/work duties. ). And yes, there are 2-in-1 Chromebook models which defacto is essentially a tablet.

This was 2+ years ago.

https://www.macrumors.com/2014/12/01/google-chromebooks-overtake-ipads-us-education/

it is worse now.

"...In the third quarter of 2016, Chromebooks made up 54% of computer shipments to K-12 classrooms in the United State ... "

Also, so many people here say "iOS.'x' is so laggy; I can't update to iOS.'x' because it slows to a crawl..."

My 2013 Samsung Galaxy Tab S is as peppy as ever w/ updates. Seems in the Mac OS/iOS (here at least) there's a noticable irritation of specs vs update at some point.

So my point being (& I have yet to experience Apple OS beyond my 7 year old iPod Touch):

It's a magical OS experience until the internal hardware can't keep up w/ the latest software. Then it's a pain.

"I put it in my drawer & haven't seen it in..." I read repeatedly.

So the original poster who said "have you ever USED an Android tablet!" is the view that astonishes me.

You seem to be getting a crapload of bad info second hand.
Nobody puts Apple tablets in drawers, but they do put those POS android tablets in drawers (, if they work at all past the first years.... Almost all Android tablets sold are pure cheap crap and they are treated as such.

There are many tens of millions of active Ipad 2, that tells you that upgrades aren't so bad at all. If you take your info form the pissy drama queens on this forum, you'll be divorced from actual reality of the situation.

BTW, still using a 3GS, 4S, 5S and currently 6s.
Tablets around the house, 2 Ipad2, one Air and 2 Air2, all in use.

The Ipad 2 is running 9.3.5 for god's sake!
