I don't know why someone would assume that just because it's smaller it follows it would have to be less expensive, unless there is some other rationale you have elaborated on?

Because that's what 99.9% of the public has come to expect - the larger the screen size the higher the price on a tablet... don't try to rationalize a stupid product lineup decision just cuz you're a fanboy...

Why? because Apple tells you it's not?

I bought my nieces iPads for gifts.

if these are the only price points, I wouldn't have. End of story. the storage capacity is irrelevant. Price of entry was.

I truly doubt i'm alone in that. at $399, my nieces would NOT be getting iPads

Would they be getting them for $329?

Apple may have upgraded the display and lowered the price, but I notice they still don't come with a pony. So awful, what a terrible omission. Apple should be ashamed.

Seriously, what a jaded bunch this can be.

Yes, questioning the logic of masses makes me a fanboy. Did you skip over the post where I stated this entire "new" iPad is just a way to repurpose existing supply chains and inventory before they are no longer produced?

why no A9 ? I do everything on the smaller ipad (my mini) that others do on the larger version. I'm sure the difference between a8 and a9 is more than just driving some more pixels. sad.

So now you can buy a bigger iPad with the faster A9 and a better screen for the exact same price more or less as the Mini????? In the UK the 'new' iPad 9.7" with 128GB is £429' the Mini with 128GB is now £419!!!!!! It would of been nice if they just dropped the price of the Mini instead but of course they wouldn't make their massive profits then, and that's all that matters to Apple these days..

I agree, except you can indeed get the bigger iPad in the 128GB storage option for $30 more than the mini. I just don't know why they couldn't do a 32GB mini for $299, surely they'd still make a little coin on it.
they don't like making merely a little coin...

You think they actually have competition in tablets? Have you actually used an Android tablet lately?

They do. Chromebooks are kicking Apple's butt. All the new 2017 models are going to be able to run Android apps too. ( although any sane school or business will lock that down if education/work duties. ). And yes, there are 2-in-1 Chromebook models which defacto is essentially a tablet.

Don't you understand? Everybody is forced to buy every Apple product. Or at least, that's what it seems like.

Seriously though- if you don't want it, don't buy it. No reason to get the slightest bit upset over it.
spoilsport:p

Just picked up a cheap immaculate iPad mini 3 with cellular on eBay. Was holding out for an update mini but it's clearly never going to happen. Apple's pricing now seems to be a deliberate attempt to kill it off.

I'm fairly certain the storage bumps are purely because it costs more to keep purchasing old modules built on old nm processes than it is to consolidate across all their lines. Not to mention the market supply is extremely tight and has been for years.

It's a cost saving move, but a smart one from a logistical perspective.

I think what we are seeing, in general, is the build up for the next generation of iPads, with no home button, following the upcoming iPhone 8.

That, and/or we are seeing the case being made for the iPad Mini Pro, which is what I am hoping for. Until then I don't see any reason to upgrade from our iPad Mini 2, we don't use it much. I should probably take it off of our Verizon account, $10/month is $120/year.

I think you have some nerve saying that.

When it seems like most here bemoan iOS for iPad as "a big iPhone (w/out phone)" that doesn't utilize the big space & specialized apps for it.

The blinders w/in the walled garden is stunning to objective sorts. If you're happy w/ iOS for iPad, then have at it. :)

If all Android tablets were $78 el cheapo RCA tablets you get at "door buster" sales, fine. To liken the Galaxy Tab S to them is misguided at best.

Using a complaint on an internet forum is hardly a basis for the vast majority of users of a product, we are just the most vocal. I've used plenty of Android tablets and not a single one of them makes me think they offer anything over my iPad. If you want to tell me I have blinders on so be it, having used multiple devices and not finding them to do anything better you can call it what you want.

Have you? Only thing apple has is the ecosystem over Samsung. But now with spotify.... who uses iTunes? I am pretty sure they let you just transfer all your stuff as well. Vudu and Ultraviolet is way better and cheaper then iTunes for movies as well. Basically reason to have Apple products is because everything just works so you pay the apple premium. But now they they sell 2+ year old laptops/tablets and give you a GB bump and tell you to get on your knees and blow them for being unworthy peasants.. yea .... time to looking to switch

Sold my Airport extreme once they announced that they won't be making more of them. Got 2 Google Wifis :) love them. Crazy range. 2 of them are also the price of 1 Airport extreme that is what 3 or 4 years old?

Recently transferred to Tmobile got 4 iPhone 7s because my wife and parents are scared of the whole galaxy thing. Blowing up phone is never good for PR.

The Microsoft Surface pro is a pretty awesome machine and so is the Google Pixel phone. I am the tech guy for my family and it is a bit annoying because if I leave apple every one else has to so I can tell them how to work their stuff. They just don't update their products. I can give 2 ***** about innovation but if Intel has new chips I expect them in my laptop that cost more then 2-3x the dell laptop with the current chip and tech in it.

For laptop I just want a MacBook air with new intel chips and a battery life just as good as my 2013 one when it was released of 12-15 hours. IS that so much to ask. I am not asking for them to make it transform into a toaster/teleport me in time or anything crazy. Just if you want a premium for your Premium computer at least have the most current tech on it. I don't care about retina screen nor touch screen nor that idiotic function key gimmick.

Yup, I have. I have no clue why you bring iTunes into it, the only thing I ever do with iTunes is a restore (if need be). For some reason you're comparing every other Apple product in a story talking specifically about iPads. The only Apple devices I own are iPads and iPhones, the rest is done with a mix of other products. I refuse to buy a Google product until they decided to stick to their ADHD medication. I've owned plenty of Google products, the vast majority were abandoned after Google became bored with them (same thing is going to happen with their WiFi products, just look at the history of those).

You do realise that even Apple don't expect you to buy each upgraded product right? Like all manufacturers they release new, higher spec products as they develop them in line with their strategy. They are more open than most manufacturers in that we tend to know every year when the cycle of upgrades will occur. You've have to have more money than sense to buy each version of a particular device. By all means if you Samsung are any better than try them. I assure you they aren't. (and their tablets aren't that great either).
Well that's the thing, the iPad Mini 4 was released in 2015 and at the time the chip was 1 year out of date. So we're looking at three year old technology, being sold as new. At the time I didn't feel that the Mini 4 was a big enough upgrade over the Mini 2 due to the lack of improvement of the A7 chip over the A8 chip. So I was never expecting to buy the very next release of the Mini. But I certainly didn't expect to still be using the Mini 2 four years after I bought it because only one minimal update has come out.

And if Apple was truly open, I'd appreciate if they would just admit they're never going to update the Mini again. I don't know whether to settle and just buy something better than my Mini 2, or keeping waiting for something better like a Mini Pro.

So in one sector (education) they're beating the iPad. The article claims they are finally ready to crack the consumer market, but since we aren't there yet only time will tell. Competition is a great thing, and it's awesome there is choice, however Google has a long way to go in my opinion. But hey, it's only my opinion.

Are they looking to discontinue the iPad Mini? At that price point, you might as well spend an extra $30 for the iPad 9.7" update.
Yeah, I really don't understand this at all. And how many iPad Mini owners really need 128 GB? Things just keep getting more and more confusing at Apple these days.

I think the Australian pricing is wrong on the website.

iPad mini 4 starts at 399 USD or 719 AUD.
399 USD = 570 AUD after GST is added.

By contrast, the "iPad" starts at 329 USD or 469 AUD which is a direct currency conversion plus GST.

Dutch store pricing is also strange.

iPad mini 4 32gb was EUR 439,- (including all taxes)
iPad mini 4 128gb is now EUR 489,- (or € 469,48 for educational; incl. all taxes).
iPad 9.7" 32gb is now EUR 409,-

That's 50 euro's more, not the same price for that jump 32 -> 128gb.

399 U.S. dollars = 369.365783 Euros + 21% taxes = EUR 446,93, so that's way more than just a euro/dollar correction that might have been done at the same time.

It is more so the implementors more than Google. Android 7.0 , Nougat, introduced split window support.

https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/multi-window.html

Part of the Android problem is the relatively slower adoption of the features rolled out by Google in Android. (e.g., tablet vendors still shipping Android 6 well into the 7.0-7.1 era and virtually no upgrades over most of the market. ). The Chromebooks are boosting the "large screen" market in a serious way that vendors like Microsoft, Adobe, etc. are probably going to be hesitant to ignore.

We'll see what Android 'O' brings in a couple months. At least the Android core developers at Google probably have broad access to the Pixel C to target with test builds and quick usability checks. 'O' will be the second iteration with the solid foundation to do development on.

If Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab S3 isn't priced 'crazy' then it should get some traction. The Tab 10.1 is probably going to feel some pain with the iPad now priced at $329 ( versus 10.1 list price of $350. )

In short, it is more for in the camp of the implementors (of hardware and software) getting their stuff together than it is Google not being competitive on foundation.

I don't want the mini to be doomed either, it's a fantastic device to just hold on one hand and the portability is fantastic !

I've used the iPad Pro and air and not one can you sit with in your hand to read a book comfortably

Really, really hope Apple do not discontinue (at some stage) the Mini 4 and release the mini pro version

At that price they are dreaming. It's $20 (AUD) more for an updated 9.7" 128GB iPad. No one in their right minds would buy this rather than the new(ish) 9.7" one.

I have a feeling Apple has a pretty fair idea what sells. Actually I have a feeling they know precisely what sells. If they thought keeping the 32GB mini in the product line made sense, they would have done that.

As someone who'd been looking to buy a mini, the 128 for the former price of the 32 is right on target, and clinches the deal. Among my planned uses is to take it on upcoming vacation. I look forward to taking many photos with it.

Hopefully this just means that they're winnowing down their inventory for the upcoming hardware refresh. I'd be very sad to see the mini form factor go -- we have three of them and they're perfect for me, the wife, and the young lad.

An iPad mini that works with the apple pencil is an insta-buy for me.

This was kind of a strange move by Apple. I'm really surprised they didn't keep a 32 GB model around. Surely at $299 they still would've been making something off it? I guess they are trying to cement the new iPad as the entry level model.
