I got the new Mini on Friday. One thing I notice with the new WiFi model for AT&T it only handles the LTE network and doesn't receive the new 5E that the iPhone and iPad Pro can.

It's Touch-ID 2.0.

Tons of reviewers and people with first hand experience have said so.

I’ve read the same, but still no definite answer. The first hand experience could also be the Mini appearing to unlock faster because the display updates faster with the much more powerful A12.

I just figured iFixIt would finally give the definitive answer.

Some people just don't like FaceID. I myself am not particularly sold on it. I like my iPhone 7 Plus with TouchID, and will be holding onto it until I see how FaceID evolves and improves. TouchID works and functions just fine -- especially for iPads -- and IMO Apple shouldn't have done away with it so quickly.

You’re still not sold on Face ID? You don’t own a Face ID device I gather. It’s amazing. Owned an iPhone X since day one. Flawless.

Now a 12.9” iPad pro and let me just say it was like Face ID was invented for the iPad, such smooth and easy security.

Lol it’s 2019 you should try it now.

Not sure why you are against FaceID so much. Is it because of price?

I would say I do not like the idea of laser beams shooting onto my face or eyes, including keeping records of facial recognition for whatever purposes (as if they don't port it over to apple servers for storage like our passwords to our systems etc). This is a reason for not liking FaceID much..

There’s no way it’s not after using it for auto fill in Safari. Lightning quick Touch ID.

One thing that annoys me on my phone is when I slip my phone out of my pocket to quickly check the time (or just to double check my phone isn’t on and unlocked in my pocket) and the thing unlocks! I then have to press the power button to re-lock it which - in time- will wear the button out.

Other than that it’s fine.

Um, "laser beams" don't shoot into your eyes, or anywhere else. Facetime is a camera. And they don't send your face data to Apple.

Why are you so opposed to Face ID? You could literally drop from the ceiling into a sea of droids and say "Hello there!" while looking at your phone and it'll unlock.

Or you could remove your hood while saying "Hello there" and it'll unlock. In fact, saying "Hello there" isn't even necessary!
Agreed. I don’t think people consider the true potential of FaceID.

Say that your hands are covered in coarse, rough, irritating sand. Are you going to want to touch your phone? No! After all, sand gets everywhere!

With FaceID, you can unlock your phone without spreading ********** ************* sand, continuing to call your crush “m’lady” as you do so. Easy! :)

I bought the Mini 5 the other day to just try it out (I figured I could return it if it didn't do anything for me since I already have a 2018 12.9" Pro) to use as a magazine/news paper reader.

It's a phenomenal device. I'm shocked how good it is, frankly.

I am completely delighted by my Mini5, and its fitting in perfectly with my 12.9 gen 2 as the 'alternate' pad

Either of you tempted to ditch your 12.9 completely?

The last thing I want is two iPads, so i’m trying to figure out if I should trade-in my 2015 12.9. What’s the audio like on the new mini? Does the screen seem cramped? How’s note-taking with the pencil? Enough room, or a bit tight?

Doss anyone know if the Lightning port is USB3 or 2? Everymac rates the Mini 5 as USB3. Txs.

I can't say for sure, but when I transferred a bunch of video from a Macbook Pro, using a UBC-C to lighning cable, it took 15 minutes for 25 GB. That seems like 2.0 speeds to me.

Face ID uses multiple cameras, but does in fact "shoot lasers into your eyes" too. Just that it's an infrared dot projector and not a harmful laser. So one could say that you're both wrong.

Well, I guess you could just make stuff up about how it works to convince yourself it’s no good. BTW, nothing you said is true of FaceID.

Lol I did try it on an XR. Lol It’s 2019 and constantly holding your phone up to your face is lame. Lol just because Apple tells you a feature is an improvement doesn’t make it an improvement. Lol I’m back on an iPhone 7 because I prefer it. Lol I got sick of all the gesturing and I was happy to return to the physical home button. Lol standing in the checkout line holding a phone up to your face makes you look like a douche. Lol, man. Lol.

Why couldn’t they make this Apple Pencil 2 capable?

Not sure but I think that would have required a new glass screen. I remember when the P2 came out that they mentioned a new screen (the glass cover) was "re-engineered" (I hate that term) to be more responsive to the new Pencil. I think Apple wanted to do an update of the chips without significantly rearranging the internals. So lots of Mini 4 parts. I think that if the mini 5 is popular, Apple will do a complete refresh's (edge-to edge OLED screen and touch ID and newest cameras) next time.

Now I know you’ve never actually used FaceID. Everything you described is false.

Well you certainly laugh a lot. ;) That's good.

What gesturing? I gaze at my phone and it unlocks. And if everyone standing on line looking at their phone is a "douche" then there are a lot of douches in the world. Not just Face ID users.

Because I don't constantly stare at my iPhone (nor want to) whilst I'm using it to practice drums (which is incidentally also why I need the headphone jack, since Air Pods are next to useless for drum practice).

Apple doesn’t port your face to their server though. Everything is handling on device.

Ha. Yes, sometimes it’s too easy to unlock.

It's funny that you need an iPad for your iPad.
