This might be a good replacement for my 2018 iPad Pro if true. I just hope it has a decent starting storage capacity and the 120hz display.

Looks great. If it comes with the A15 Bionic, which i suspect it will, i will trade in my Ipad Air 3 and pay the rest.
This Mini will absolutely not come with an A15 chip of any kind.

Edit: I was wrong and I will admit it. I'm shocked but good on Apple!

Not sure what point you're making here; I'm saying that the people who always pop up in iPad mini threads saying "why not just get an iPhone Pro Max" seem to neglect that a) it's still much smaller than an iPad mini and b) the mini is about half the cost.

Obviously you pay more for extra features, but I don't know what that's got to do with anything.

this is my 12 pro max and my iPad mini 5. The mini 5 is a lot bigger.

120Hz display is not happening either. Do people not realize the pathetic internals they've given the Mini's over the years. I mean, I wish it would come with an A15 and 120Hz refresh rate but that's just not happening.

A keyboard? How on earth would that work with an iPad mini.

it barely works on the 11 inch pro.
Agreed. I always wanted a proper keyboard for the Mini but after using the 11” MKB for the iPad Pro, I can barely tolerate it. It’s better than nothing but it’s so cramped! I think I’d be better off connecting a larger keyboard via Bluetooth.

Why can’t they leave it 7.9 AND minimize the bezel area?

That’s the whole point of being “Mini”.

.
Agreed. My Fold 3 inner display is 7.6" with an 88% screen to body ratio. It is lighter than the current Mini as well. Needless to say, I've given my wife my 5th gen Mini.

I still think they should call this the iPad Air 8.3, just keeps the naming simple.
That’s making it more complicated actually.
The only confusion is between (regular budget) iPad and Air.
Pro and Mini are pretty straightforward.

I’ve been almost 2 years using this 11” iPad Pro with the keyboard. It absolutely works.
However, I do understand it could be really difficult to reduce the keyboard further.
I used to have an iPad mini 2 with some bt-keyboard from Amazon. Typing was really okay, as long as you didn’t have to use some of the special characters from the German language (ö, ä, ü) which were put on regular keys as secondary function.

again your point is that ipad it costs less but with extra screen real estate...but , like i said, you pay 1000$ for extra features, and far better portability

edit: same external size with wider screen would improve aspect ratio though.

Yes I wouldn’t mind if it stays the size with minimal bezels.

again, people who buys an ipad ...already have a phone...so your point is strange thats why i was asking your point exactly....the ipad will always be a secondary device..less portability, less features and so on...its like a monitor, you can have a 27" display under 1000$ but no features at all

So i guess, people who are asking why not take an iphone max....i think they target those users who are in a transition of a device... want to change their phone.

If true, that means just getting rid of the bezels and keeping the iPad Mini the same physical size as the current one. That is good, as anytihng bigger defeats the purpose of being a mini.

This would line up well for an October release alongside the Macs. It still seems weird to break up the iPad releases by releasing the new base iPad today and the mini next month, but we shall see after today.

Could be the chip shortage and Apple had to make a decison who's first.

It's ultimately a personal preference thing. You can definitely make do with just an iPhone Pro Max - but I like the extra screen estate that an iPad brings - and the mini hits a sweet spot where it's still reasonably portable (compared to the larger ones).

The monitor analogy is interesting - so let's use it.

Can you use a MacBook without an external monitor? Absolutely!
Do I prefer to use the MacBook with a larger 27" monitor for more screen real estate? You bet I do.
Do I need the larger 27" monitor to use the MacBook? Nope, but I definitely prefer to do so - but I agree not everyone thinks like I do.

I'd like to think a similar line of thinking applies to buyers of the iPad mini, even if they already own e.g. an iPhone Pro Max.

Regarding the iPad Mini vs iPhone 12 Pro Max argument, yes, the sizes may be close (though to me personally, not really). But the big difference is, the Mini runs iPad OS, not iOS, so many apps' iPad versions' layouts are different than their iOS counterparts. Huge difference to me.
