And in the same span of time, we've seen two newer iPad Pros and no new iPad minis.
Uh except the 2019 iPad Mini. That wasn’t the point anyways. The point is that a redesigned Mini has not been rumored since before the redesigned iPad Pro even came out.

Why, exactly, are people excited about narrow bezels? I've always found it a bit mysterious, to be honest. The bezels on my iPad Air are already arguably a bit narrow, since I often inadvertently trigger UI interactions just trying to hold it... Narrow bezels might look nice, but they don't improve the UX, imho.

8.3 will be a very nice size to hold compared to the air. This should be the same overal size or slightly small overal than current iPad mini.
I expect price to start at 599 or 549. Maybe the air will come down to 599 base price.
It will be as capable as the air just in an easier to hold package.

What I want is iPad mini having the ability to make phone calls and receive text. For me iPad mini is what phablet should’ve been, with some ability to do actual multitask, and iPhone itself becomes an accessory of iPad.

I don't understand the appeal of making the physical size larger. Obviously I get the rationale for the larger screen, but if they are increasing the actual package size then I don't understand why a consumer wouldn't just buy an iPad air. The entire appeal of the iPad mini was that it was small, small enough to barely be pocketable.
Yes.
I suspect the mini isn’t a big seller for Apple but if they’re updating it, it likely has enough sales to support its existence. And for me there isn’t an appeal at all to make it bigger. The smaller form factor slides (as another poster put it) right into my eco setup and usage scenarios: IPhone 11, IP Mini, MBA M1 with large monitor for the MBA to be a desktop.

Ironically, because of the IP Minis more unique footprint, specs and likely lesser build numbers, it pushes its per unit mfg cost up relative to the air. It makes the mini and air pricing potentially crash into each other especially after initial inventory is sold.
But the easier to hold factor is key for me too. The mini is my go to couch device as well as bring along because of the small size. I’d love for Apple to keep the same screen size but reduce the bezel to make the form factor even smaller. ((For anyone who likes more bezel to grab onto, my last protective cover added plenty of edge to grab onto — that thing was serious military grade protection but a bit much on the added weight))

It's physically impossible for the new 8.3" iPad mini have the new aspect ratio, uniform bezels, and retain the same size form factor. It's as simple as that.

Your own drawings show uneven borders (top is thicker than the sides).
Why should it be impossible?
My drawing is crap I did this in 5 mins just to get a feeling so that one is not very reliable 😄

All these new features starting at just $699...
I bought a mini last week with intention of returning it, but man, base with cellular at $529 is crazy for not having a significant update for a minute, 2019 mini 5 only updated camera and chips, plus Apple Pencil. Want to get one for my wife but worried price will be too steep upon release!

I find it funny that people think it will be normal if the price is 549-599... Come on, we all know it will be more expensive than current iPad mini due to redesign (if true), but we shouldn't be so "willing" to pay more money just because Apple wants to increase the price.

Current iPad mini costs 449€ in Spain, I don't think too many people will but it if it goes over 500€.

You get a cellular version

Just make an iPad Pro mini. Give it the smart connector and throw an M1 chip in there for good measure.
While I LOVE your idea, it is destined to be an iPad Air Mini. I can even see them upgrading the iPad Air 5 at the same time with A15 processors and 5g, and adding $100 to each SKU as a thank you to loyal customers.
