Good luck with that at. Kindle's can be read outdoors in the brightest sunlight. iPad screens can barely be seen even on a cloudy day. Amazon's Kindle and their book selection owns iBooks.

Everyone knows you're right about the screen, but if you want the selection of the kindle bookstore or already own a lot of kindle books, you can download the kindle app to access all of them.

But wont a 7 inch iPad make zombie Steve rise from the grave and wreck terrible vengeance on those who didn't heed his warning that nobody wanted a 7 inch device ?

Obviously THIS is the event the mayans predicted would be the end of the world, as Tim announces a 7 inch iPad to the world, zombie Steve arises to eradicate mankind from the planet and replace Humanity with iHumanity modelled in his own image..

Or maybe its late and I've had too much caffeine and sugar

Steve Jobs later gave into the idea after Cue sent him those emails. Plus he also said that nobody wanted to watch videos on a handheld and then apple launched the iPod video

Yes it's true. My Kindle outperforms my iPad dramatically.

I don't see Apple catching up to Amazon for quite some time, if ever.

that can be said about tv shows and movies as well actually.

its beyond me how a new movie can cost up to $19,99 in HD on iTunes when u can get the movie on BluRay incl. a free digital copy for around $14,99. same with 2,99 for an HD tv episode. HD should be standard by now, no need to charge extra. make it 99cent an ep and they'd make more in the long run

but those stuck in the 90s studios just dont get it, yet they wonder why people still pirate

It might be for convenience (tv shows and movies). You can easily download them off of iCloud straight to your device. I could be wrong though.

7" Kindle Fire HD 32GB is $249.

4" iPod Touch 32GB is $299.

How does Apple release a 7" tablet for anything less than $349. ?

I was considering the Mini until you mentioned that. I won't pay a dime over $316.32 (with tax :) )

I think you'll find Apple are planning to go after the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus both of which have glossy colour screens. Apple are not going to compete with the £69 basic monochrome Kindle as Apple prefers to make multi-function devices. If all you want is an eReader go for the Kindle but if you want more you need a proper tablet.

I do agree with you on the glare issue on the iPad. I hope they are able to address that with the iPad Mini in the same way they have cut down the glare on the new MBP-Retina.

it would be awesome if they'd shy away from the boring alu and use some colors like on the new iPod Touch. a blue on white iPad mini would be neat :D

Has Apple actually secured all the publishers that Amazon has yet?
No, and with their policy of forcing the agency model they probably never will.

hopefully apple will incorporate a hybrid e-ink/led display into this.
There is no such thing. You can have an LCD that is both reflective and transmissive, but true eInk (ie. capsules filled with black and white pigment floating in a clear fluid) is physically incompatible with LCD technology.

People are already comparing specs, while you know that's not what matters.

iPad Mini will probably have a better battery, better screen, lighter weight, etc. iPads and iPhones always feel better than the competitors due to things that cannot be expressed in specs lists. The same will the case for iPad Mini.

$349 is perfect.

A few users are talking about pricing at $299? Isn't this what the entry iPod touch is at?

I just don't understand what Apple are going to do? Any more than $299, will be too expensive.

Maybe that's why the new iPod line hasn't shipped yet? (Prices may be changed?) idk.

Thoughts?

Why are we so hung up about this? Line up equivalent specs iPad with cellular vs. iPhone. Set aside the iPhone subsidies. How much is the iPad? How much is the iPhone? But wait, the iPad has a bigger screen than the smaller device; it must be priced higher.

Unlocked iPhone 32GB $799, 64GB $899
iPad 3 32GB $729, 64GB $829.
iPad 2 (wifi only) 16GB $399 (with cell) 16GB $529

Point: Screen size does not automatically yield higher price. One might argue that it's easier to build something within the larger space rather than trying to pack everything into a Touch.

Pricing- whatever it will be- will get Apple's target margin, probably rounded to the nearest $X49 or $X99. If X can be a "1" or "2" it will be.

If someone else's hangup is how not to kill the market for the iPod Touch (with a lower price for this iPad Mini), does the existance of the iPad with cellular (and better cellular plans by the way) kill the market for the iPhone? There will still be those who want something to fit inside their pocket. So even if the iPad Mini is priced below the Touch, there will still be those who want the Touch (for greater portability).

iPad Mini just "doesn't make sense" until Apple announces it. It's pricing "doesn't make sense" until Apple announces it too. Then, most of the pessimism will magically flip to "shut up and take my money", "I'm already standing in line for one", "best iDevice ever", etc. Not too long thereafter, you'll see posts of people who own all 3 sizes with comments about how they rationalize owning one of each. A little further down the road and we'll remember Apple as the inventor of this mini size and applaud them suing others for copycat sizes. Etc.

Steve said that a 7 inch tablet is not big enough to properly expres tablet apps, and he was 100% correct.

But if the iBook is intended for reading books, that will be a stroke of innovative genius by Apple.

Lol, bit of a stretch calling such a move "a stroke of innovative genius" unless you live in a bubble and ignore the myriad different options.I like Apple stuff, but I try to lay off the kool aid.

As for SJ, he probably went back on a third of his boldest statements when the market demonstrated that money could be made. I never had a problem with this, he was a businessman, neither an ethics consultant or messiah.

Steve said a lot of things then did a 180. He was great at many things, but first and foremost he was a salesman so you always had to take what he said with a grain of salt when he came out against something.

I want to hear that we can "loan" out books like can be done with Amazon and Kindle. The bookstore needs more books as well. Too many times I cannot find the one I am looking for and go to Amazon instead. Not a big deal for me, but it is for Apple.

It's not a big deal for Apple, but it is for you.

Reading books on a backlid screen just issent fun.

I was never bothered by reading on my iPad, though it is superior on the kindle. The question for me is whether the iPad mini provides enough benefits to justify the cost or would the kindle paperwhite be a better fit for me

unless its a Kindle Paperwhite and boy have they patented it ;)

Front lit.

For me it's not just e-ink that makes the Kindle preferable, it's the size, weight, battery life and, second only to the screen, the complete lack of distractions that invariably pull me away when reading on an iPad.

Hey, you know what Apple is good at? Creating new markets. Get over yourself.

Don't make me laugh. Apple will never, ever have such sales content with books that Amazon has. Ever. iTunes University may be a different story due to their Educational market.

Google is 10 years ahead of Apple with Maps.

Amazon is more than 10 years ahead with books, and then eventually other merchandise. Amazon's amount of books you can find in their directory is collosal compared to Apple's iBooks.

The only thing Apple has gotten right as their music content and collection on iTunes despite it's ever-changing UI (user interface).

What about using the Assertive Display technology demoed at IFA this year? Do you think Apple could implement it in the iPad mini? Would make sense if they market it as a reader-type device..

Excerpt from linked article:
Assertive Display, on the other hand, is an intelligent digital processing technology that “adjusts each pixel individually in real time, based models of how the display and the human visual system respond to the displayed content and the viewing environment.” The result is a vastly better viewing experience in the brightest conditions, as well as dramatically reduced power consumption (up to 50%) due to the fact you no longer require full brightness of the backlight to view content.

I watched the video at the link. Really interesting, thanks.

Never heard of "assertive" display technology before. Surprised more folks aren't reporting on it. Wouldn't be surprised if apple license it (or just buy the company!)

I don't know who all these people are with nothing better to do than read in bright sunlight.

Understandable, I guess, given your forum name. You should travel to places that have warmth and sunlight though. It can be quite enjoyable to spend a few hours getting "lost" in a book on the beach, or pool, or in the backyard, or at a park. Don't knock it till you try it. Reading, it's not just for trying to fall asleep.
