Assertive Display tech

What about using the Assertive Display technology demoed at IFA this year? Do you think Apple could implement it in the iPad mini? Would make sense if they market it as a reader-type device..

Excerpt from linked article:
Assertive Display, on the other hand, is an intelligent digital processing technology that “adjusts each pixel individually in real time, based models of how the display and the human visual system respond to the displayed content and the viewing environment.” The result is a vastly better viewing experience in the brightest conditions, as well as dramatically reduced power consumption (up to 50%) due to the fact you no longer require full brightness of the backlight to view content.

If true, this is gonna be further evidence that Apple has lost the initiative, becoming just a me-too company under Cook.

A smaller iPad is as irrelevant as a 30-inch iPhone; there is absolutely no need for it, especially now that the iPhone 5 already has a 4-inch screen, and that every app has been conceived with the 9-inch screen size in mind.

A terrible move by Apple, in my view.

Hey, you know what Apple is good at? Creating new markets. Get over yourself.

Eddy Cue should be fired then. No one who finds Facebook compelling should be shaping the future of Apple products.

The Officers of the Board and Steve Jobs himself found Facebook compelling enough to integrate into iOS and Mac and tried to get Facebook on Ping. Steve Jobs expressed admiration for the Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, for not selling out and dominating the social networking space as well. Fire all of them ?

There's a chance that, like the new iPod Nano, this iPad Mini could run its own dedicated 'slimmed down' software. That would then give people a reason to still purchase an iPad full the full iOS functionality.

What's really ripping off customers is the fact, that a digital copy of a book costs exactly the same as a printed one!

Why is that?

Printing, shipping, storing, etc. doesn't apply, but they still charge the same.

If they want people to adopt to ebooks they need to price them lower, 1/3 of the printed copy!

that can be said about tv shows and movies as well actually.

its beyond me how a new movie can cost up to $19,99 in HD on iTunes when u can get the movie on BluRay incl. a free digital copy for around $14,99. same with 2,99 for an HD tv episode. HD should be standard by now, no need to charge extra. make it 99cent an ep and they'd make more in the long run

but those stuck in the 90s studios just dont get it, yet they wonder why people still pirate

$249, I hope.

You're both wrong. Trust me when I say that they're going to knock the price metric out of the park. Remember when we were all shocked at how inexpensive the iPad was? Expect to be that surprised by the iPad mini. I'd be willing to bet that Apple will sacrifice a few points of profit margin on this one in order to make this product more competitive and a better value than some of the more cheaply made tablets on the market.

They better work on the screen then. In strong daylight, on a train, buss or in the car the iPad is horrid. Reflections comming from everywhere. At night time when in bed, even with the screen dimmed to its minimumn it's too bright. Both these situations are when I like to read books. The iPad is horrid in both situations.

Not to mention the short battery life and how long it takes for it to charge.

It's just not a functional product for reading books. Other hardware on the market is much better.

It's very possible this is an Edu keynote. Apple have had one a while ago too. In New York I think it was. (don't quote me, not 100% sure on that one). And iBools + iTunes U all fits into that theme.

Would a inbetweener iPad fit in Apple's Edu plans? Quite possibly yes. But with the actual iPad being as popular as it is and no part leaks) I think it's a low probability of being released.

I do think Apple need to keep being the best in the Edu sector. I remember watching that first Jobs keynote when he returned to Apple. And he said Apple have 2 core markets. Edu and creative professionals. And I believe that has not changed to this very day. These still are 2 of Apple's strongest markets. So if this probably keynote is an Edu one it makes a lot of sense.

I'll guess they have a new screen that is optimized for reading stuff. Probably a trimmed down iOS6 version (something like the iPod Nano).

Otherwise I don't really see the point in such a device.

Lol at the suggestion that e-ink, or any new screen tech will be anyway near the mini. With the leaky ship that is Apple these days, any link with e-ink would have been trailed yonks ago. Ain't gonna happen. 1024x768 IPS looks to be nailed on which, while nice for some, is 2,359,296 pixels short to pique my interest sadly. v2 for me.

BTW, Im not disparaging e-ink, big fan, had multiple ebook readers going back to the Sony PRS-500, and am looking forward to the delivery of my Paperwhite on the 25th :) (UK)

Trust me, there has NEVER been any point in launching such a device, unless it's a TOTALLY new category such as a mindblowingly good Apple e-reader (however improbable that may seem).

My only hope is that this rumor is totally off-base, and that the only thing we're gonna see relates to revamped software/edu initiatives. An iPad Mini is sheer suicide, market-wise.

Why exactly?

Did you feel the same way about the smaller, more affordable 11" Macbook Air?

Was anyone expecting that?

Might Apple be about to invent the matt screen surface to reduce reflections?

C'mon Apple build a device that makes the Fire and Nexus look cheap (and not in a good way). If you build a superior device people will pay more for it.

1024x768 came from one source - John Gruber - and it wasn't based on anything other than his speculation. He still thinks the focus will be on thin and light and retina display would make that difficult. But if this this device is going to be marketed for reading then it better have a retina-like display. Once you go retina there's no going back.

You promised me many things that drunken night we shared a donna kebab and half a bottle of vodka & red bull as we gazed up into the stars. Remember how we laughed as the stars danced (admittedly we were off our nuts at the time on some of those e's your mate pilfered) and then you made some big big promises....... And then the earth moved (cue 70's porn music)...

And look at us now... You can't even remember any of it happening :( let alone the promises you made... You just act like it was all just made up  :(. It's like what I've written is somehow made up, even if I Promise it isn't...

So forgive us our skepticism if we don't just take 'your promise' as anything other than the ramblings of a blaggard.... ;)

Look i'm trying to remember, i make so many promises you know it's hard to keep track. Was that a midnight kebab outside the Aussie Pub in Ireland or the Irish Pub in Sydney. There were too many stars out that night. I still can't remember... all i remember is losing that phone... at the bar...

where are the fools who doubted Digitimes' inside sources since last year... the same folks who complained to MacRumors about posting iPad mini rumors... next time you kids have a little respect for those actually involved in the supply chain research.

I don't know who all these people are with nothing better to do than read in bright sunlight.

What people that go outside? When the sun is out.... Strange eh....

Why bother when these days you can pop a vitamin D tablet and stay home ;)

Hey, you know what Apple is good at? Creating new markets. Get over yourself.

Problem being they are not creating a new market here. Just a new device for an existing market. Apples strengths are not in new market creation.
