Hardly surprising given it's not really a flagship product, it's like queueing for the new iPod touch

It's still amazingly idiotic to stand in line to buy a MASS product that you can pre-order and purchase ONLINE for the SAME price and get it delivered to your house ON THAT VERY SAME DAY.

The only explanation that I can come up with is that it's some sort of substitute for going to church.

Some probably want to check it out in person before buying it.

A few maybe but I'm thinking the bulk is a combo of ordered online and waiting for the LTE.

I think too folks are tiring of the whole first day line nonsense in some areas now that they assume the iPhone 5 thing is precedent and daily stock will go 'personal pickup' every night. So they will wait a couple of days and do that.

To me it's not a huge deal for Apple. The huge lines served the press more than the stores anyway.

...

I really wanted to get this for my wife for christmas but they missed my price point. For $279 I would have bought one right away but at this price I will really have to consider if I should get something else. The pricing of the ipod touch is just retarded at $299 for the new one I dont see why anyone would buy one, the old one should have been dropped all together and the new one should have taken its price points

It's the same explanation for why people post pictures of themselves at bars, marathons, sporting events, etc on Twitter and Facebook. Social comparison.

Anyways, the lines are short because the interest in this product is pretty low. The vast majority of people who already have iPads will not care about the mini. It will really start to sell once Christmas time comes around and people's brats start screaming their lungs out about wanting an iPad mini.

Shorter lines compared to what? And who, besides media or stupid wall street analysts were expecting long lines at the stores? Why is this even a story?

^^^this. I never remember there being lines outside of Apple stores until the first iPhone. But before that, they still did a lot of business and Apple was growing steadily.

Wall Street just jumped on the bandwagon after the phone appeared, as opposed to those of us who had Apple stock in the mid-90s and hung in there.:)

Before the theories of this being a failed product start.. or have they already

Anyway, as others have said this isn't "that product" that people jump in and buy. The iPhone and iPad are the big names on the street.

iPod Touch, iPad Mini, the Mac are all secondary products but awesome all the same. Most people also probably bought the large iPad and see no reason to get the mini.

Still more than the Surface...

That's not hard, given only Apple fans line up.

Was talking to an Apple sales person in the shop, and he said this was the smallest launch so far, some 30 people at the local Apple store here in london. I really expected to see lines when I walked past this morning, and there was like 5 people inside the store amongst an army of blue t-shirt sales staff.

Isn't it actually iPad Mini + iPad 4 launch? So, it is in fact a flagship launch that goes not-so-noticed.

How many units were in the online channel. They could have put more there since many stores are still dealing with iPhone 5 overnight sales etc. so more folks were able to get that way thus no need to line up

----------

no surprise i have no interest in the ipad mini
dont see it as a product that has a purpose if you already have a ipad already

You aren't the target.

All the folks that never bought an iPad because they wanted something more 'kindle sized' are the target.

As expected!

As expected some already bought their Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD as soon as Tim Cook announced the price.

I would love to have one right now - but I have to wait for the 2nd generation with some better specs...

More people have been conditioned to pre-order now. It is the increase in ship times that will incentivize some folks to not wait and go today and rough standing in line. Developers "need" one, so there is some baseline demand there. There are fanbois and early adopters, so that's another layer. Then there are the regular folk who simply want one. The lines will likely exhaust all available supply.

A large segment of users are of course waiting for cellular capability.

I think the larger corporate and ed users will opt for the low end wifi model.

Rocketman

I'ld say it's sales are still doing fine, with supplies sold out on line. But for many people, this may be folded into the holiday shopping, for which there is no rush. I'm considering 2, one each for my two teens. But I will wait till December to purchase.

Has anyone bitched about how it doesn't fit in your pocket? Remember those weird iPad critics that claimed it would flop because it wasn't portable via back pocket? It was strange.

Did people want a tablet computer to fit into a pocket? Before the iPad came out, tablet PCs were really just laptops with removable/fold-able keyboard and touch screens.

The only complaining about a device being too large for pockets that I know about are directed at smart phones with really large screens.

I am the line at bestbuy in fort worth

Got to my local bestbuy at 7:00 am and I'm the only person in line.

I don't see why the lack of lines is a shock to anyone. If you wanted one on launch day you had a full 3 days before they sold out unless you wanted a white version.

.

Online channels don't have access to the full stock and did sell out. Thus not everyone could order online for 'that every same day'

Because.... Surface runs Windoze... you know, from... Microsoft!

Surface does NOT run Windows, at least 'Windows' that most people are familiar with.

Surface runs Windows RT, which is NOT compatible with Windows 95/XP/7 or 8. It's it's own beast like iOS is compared to OS X.

This is what Microsoft fails to inform consumers about.

The Surface PRO (> $1000 and not available until next year), will supposedly run Windows 8.
