Will tablet market share look like smartphone market share in a few years time?

I don't know why anyone is surprised, it's a iPad Mini, so it's a mini line. :)

The fact that a large number of people show up for most of these launches any more is slightly ridiculous. For the most part they are just revisions of other products already available and most are available for pre-order ahead of time. I am guessing many people pre-ordered the new iPad and iPad mini considering most people have played with an iPad already. The only time I ever judge a line size is at the launch of an entirely new product in order to get a sense of anticipation for the product.

Will tablet market share look like smartphone market share in a few years time?

In my opinion, before Android takes off the way iPad did, the apps designed specifically for tablets in the Android store need to increase A LOT and they need to be easier to find. The Android tablet app selection can't even compare with iPad at this point.

It's called an opinion. Yes, that's right, even if you don't agree with them, they have every right to express themselves and it's still an opinion.

*Since it seems you have some difficulty with the difference between your and you're, I'll assume you need some help with this...

Opinion, noun
def: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter.

You stating that they are "insecure" and have "some sort of personal inadequacy" is nothing more than a baseless and pathetic ad hominem.

Touched a raw nerve by the look of it, but my statement stands. It never ceases to amaze me how many people seem to come to MacRumors specifically to post comments on the forum about how good their non Apple choices of technology are. If you don't like or own Apple devices as this guy obviously doesn't why bother coming here to post. I merely raised the possibility that, just maybe, he has feelings of inadequacy about his choices that instills the need to come here and post off topic comments to reinforce his own views. Whatever the actual reason he must be suffering some form of character defect to do this. What he posted here may have been 'opinion' as you put it but one that was off topic for this article specifically laced with comments designed to elicit a negative response. Call it 'opinion' if you like but most people consider it Trolling.

I'm not sure why people have to show stats showing more Android devices sold than iOS devices. It's obvious that's going to be the case, Android devices are manufactured by a bunch of different companies and Apple is just one company....it's all relative. If you look at the relativity of it Apple has market share, but ultimately who cares which has more sales....just enjoy the device you prefer most, be it iOS or Android.

Everyone saying the lines are short but we don't know how many people have ordered online that figure we will never know only apple would know the figures. The problem is that its so easy to order online and you don't have to mess about doing anything much easier too do.I have ordered my from john lewis just because i get a two years warranty with it a lot better then getting one off apple if there is any problems under two years doesn't matter send it back get a new one.

Many are saying the Mini should have been $299 (some are saying less) but would $30 really make a difference for most customers?

If $30 is a big deal then I suspect Apple doesn't really want you as a customer.

If Apple gave the iPad mini retina, it would be exactly the same pixel density as the iPhone... 326ppi.

That fits quite nicely with the recognised print standard of 300dpi.

I imagine it would be really expensive to make such a high quality screen the size of the iPad mini though.

No queue for the new Mac Mini Either

Why would anyone get in line for the iPad Mini?
Seriously it is an iPad, only smaller (and with the old display and processor).

People cannot be that desperate.

this is an interesting thread. Why is the smaller line news worthy? Before the launch, analyst expected Apple will sell 50M iphone and 5-8m Ipad mini in 4Q. In 3Q12, Apple sell 14M ipad 2+Ipad 3 and 26.9m Iphone. So of course the line will be shorter.

As for retina display fans, are you sure you know what you want? Ipad 4 is about 1.44lb and Ipad mini is about 3/4 size of the Ipad 4. So a retina display at IPad 4 resolution of 2048x1536 Ipad min probably will weight about 1.08 lb (Ipad mini weight 0.68 lb), about 58% more than Ipad mini. And then who is going to pay for the cost of the extra set of led back light (Ipad 3/4 use 2 set of LED backlight) and the bigger battery pack (because of the extra set of LED back light). So an Ipad mini with retina display at Ipad 4 resolution will probably weight 58% more + may be $80 more.. Anyone still interest in a device like that?

Apple can get to retina spec on Ipad mini without going to 2048x1536 because of the smaller size (much like Nexus 7), but it introduces screen layout problem to all the tablet app in existence. A new resolution will force all the existing app to update the design and who know the schedule of when will they be done. So we end up a device that is just like Android tablet, a tablet with much better spec but terrible app experience. Is that what you want? I know I don't.

Ipad mini is not a flagship device. It is a entry level device that is much more mobile than the flagship Ipad 4. It cost lower and you can use it with one hand. If you are not willing to pay for the flagship price, you shouldn't compare it to the flagship features. Comparing to Nexus 7 or Amazon Fire HD is a fair game. But there is a reason that Google and Amazon priced their tablet with such a low price. It is an indication that the demand for their product is weak at higher price point. Asking for a lower price Ipad mini is like saying I want a steak but I am only willing to pay a hamburg price. Of course, you are going to be disappointed. Ipad mini is going to be the lowest margin product in the current Apple product line up. They discussed this in Apple earning conference call a week or so ago. Ipad 2 and Ipad 3 has 23 to 32% gross margin. After paying tax, design cost, distribution cost and pay tax, Apple at best make 10-12% on each Ipad 2 and Ipad 3. The base Ipad mini gross margin is going to be in the high teen and Apple probably make 3-5% profit after all the expense. The only way Apple can make money on Ipad mini is customer buy a lot of the high end model (the 32g, 64G or the one with wifi). The high end model will have a much better gross margin. Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD loss money for Google and Amazon. Google make up the loss by the search revenue (Google pay Apple to be used as the default search engine in IOS device but no fee to anyone for Android device). Amzn make it up when people spend money on their site and they sold the default search engine right to Microsoft.

I have an Ipad 3 and I am serious thinking about getting an Ipad mini for traveling and around town (e.g. use it as a nav). It is a different device than Iapd 3 because of the weight and size issue.

Great post. Do you think Apple can beat last year EPS in Q1? If not it would be the first time the have yoy decline in more than 5 years.

The same could be said for the Apple fanatics that continuously spout how great Apple is and how they can do no wrong....seems like the fanatics are also many times very defensive about their buying choices. Even more annoying is how they'll attack anything non-Apple and proclaim how every other competitor is non-innovative / copying / produces crap. This is not a zero-sum game folks...and at the end of the day, these things that everyone is fighting over are just electronic gadgets (yes, I know some of these gadgets are used for productivity, research, etc...)

Because Apple got to be the biggest company in the world by turning people away...

No, Apple got to be the biggest company in the world by steering clear of the bottom end of the market where the customers want everything for nothing.

This makes sense. How the hell did it end up being posted here?

Just picked one up at one of the Minneapolis stores. In and out within 10 minutes! Wish it was always like this. :)

Of course the lines are going to be shorter - It's the iPad Mini. Smaller people, smaller lines. :)

Many are saying the Mini should have been $299 (some are saying less) but would $30 really make a difference for most customers?

It is a huge psychological difference. 249$ to 299$ feels less of a difference than 299$ to 329$ although it isn't. Even worse for the 199$ for a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 compared to the 329$ of the mini .. that is a big difference.
