Isn't this how it's done these days?

Announce product, deliver short supply so it sells out fast, creates even more demand, eventually supplies ramp up and deliver product in masses.

Nintendo does this with its consoles.

All of the iPhones and iPads have delivered this way. Why would it be any different this time?
Exactly, or else if they make a big supply at lunch date. They wont sell out, and then people would start to wonder "It most not be that good of a product if it didn't sell out". Human nature.

Yes I realize, but wouldn't it suck that you just got a new iPad then 3 months from now. Then they release a new upgraded IPad for the same price you got yours.

This isn't a "new, upgraded iPad" as you mentioned. In fact, in many ways, it is somewhat of a downgrade from the current model you just bought.

The most important thing is that you can comfortably hold it and use it with one hand, it's more portable. It might not fit in your trousers (although some backpockets are big enough) however it will fit in a jacket, hoodie, coat or some suits. A regular iPad won't fit in any garment (afaik). The size is an advantage for some people. Others prefer the bigger screen.

Yup. I prefer the larger screen myself, but I do know quite a few people who'd said they'd like the iPad better if it were a little smaller and lighter. The mini would be perfect for them.

I guess it doesn't help that Apple is continuously under a microscope. We are hyper aware of issues when they come up. Doubling down on security or not.

Exactly, if a toilet clogs at Apple HQ, the plumber will report on the inefficiency of Apple's pluming system. That will likely lead to "leaked" parts (no pun) of said toilet...

I really cannot imagine this being even in production. I doubt Apple would create another iPad that would become somewhat of a fragmented iOS ecosystem.

If the iPad mini has a 768x1024 resolution (in portrait mode, obviously) then there's no fragmentation.

Anyone else find this report hard to believe? Is there any really new technology in the rumored iPad mini? Most of the parts are probably off the shelf. Seems like a ruse to get people to preorder on day 1...
Glass, aluminum, copper, silicon are all old news. But the precise shape of this device is new. Everything still has to be made specifically for it.

There are what, 3 different screen resolutions among current 7" tablets right now? And this one is supposedly 7.85". That's just one major part, and it's clearly not "off the shelf".

This would be good news, actually.
If there are yield issues with the lcd panels, this could mean they are retina screens.
I can' t see them having trouble with a 1024x768 panel based on iphone 3gs panels.
It would indicate apple will use newer, more advanced parts for the ipad mini.
Instead of older hardware, based on ipad2.

It's possible that they'd use the more advanced in-cell IGZO panels, but other than that, I'd be very surprised if the mini was anything more than a shrunken down iPad 2. Either way, at $299, I'll be picking up several as Xmas gifts.

I hope they don't release a new new ipad. I just but a new ipad. I will shoot my self if they do.

The quality and capabilities of this mini will not compare to a full featured iPad. Save your bullets.

I can't use diaphragms personally, but you don't see me going around on contraceptive boards talking about how stupid they are.

WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS? WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! I DON'T EVEN HAVE A VAGGGINNNNAAA!

Thank you for posting this!

I can haz A6 pleeez.

I doubt it. This item needs to compete against Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 while remaining cheaper than the current gen iPad and iPod touches.

One way to do it, use older processor lines where capitalized expenditures have already met/exceeded expectations and extending the life of these mfg lines.

If you want something they wont upgrade thus making your newly purchased item the "previous generation" go buy a Mac Pro. You'll get a lot of mileage out of it before it's upgraded. :)

Sorry Mac Pro crowd, I had to do it. :(

On its larger surface (compared to the iPhone 5), the anodized aluminum on the back is probably having more problems with scratches than the iPhone 5 did.

I think a case will be an essential accessory for anyone who wants to maintain a half decent appearance on their iPad Mini.

Yes. They have stated this, and they have constrained supply for months after release, if not years.
All of the iPhones and iPads have delivered this way.
No. Apple has gone to extreme lengths to have huge stockpiles ready, and massive daily output after release that ship immediately to POS places to ramp up to meet demand asap. Esp the last couple releases.

Demand of 5m phones in one day is ridiculous demand, not constrained supply. The law is "supply and demand", not just "supply". Claiming all companies should have perfect supply to meet demand on every day is silly. They teach you that on the first day of the first economics class. I had that in high school.

This will not cause fragmentation at all. It is essentially the same as an iPad 2. It has the same screen resolution and processor. And it's not smaller enough that devs will have to worry about the size of touch targets. Thus, if it's designed to work well with an iPad 2 it will work well with the iPad mini.

Might be cool if it has a carbonized reinforced back with a texture that will hide minor scratches and give a little grip to it. There are news bits of Apple purchasing massive amounts of carbon fiber of late.

You can bet that if any of the constrained parts are provided by Samsung, that part availability will only get worse until Apple can switch to another supplier.

All's fair in love (and especially)...war.

All I care about is what's going on with the iMac??? The iPad mini is uninteresting right now

Well, it's a good idea you're hanging out in an iPad Mini rumours thread then! How about visiting all the other product threads and telling them how you're uninterested in their rumours too?! :p
