My guess is that they want to show off the capabilities of their data center and maybe announce that they're updating iTunes Match with greater abilities - ie, a song limit much more like Amazon's Cloud Player (250,000) and/or a Spotify-like service to go up against the upcoming Microsoft offering (which will have more music than iTunes currently has!), maybe even a Netflix-like movie service. Need a much more robust backbone to handle any of that, dontcha think?

they definitely need to raise the limit on the song count. I didn't think the 20k song limit would be reached, but apparently I have a lot of music on CD's.. haha

What a beautiful logo. Apple still got it!

I switched to Safari from Chrome which I have been using for the last many years. Not because of fanboism, but because I want my bookmarks and everything else synced to my other iOS devices. So far I am happy the way it works.

And Live streaming of Apple events is a plus.

Everybody is getting so excited about today; you can feel the tension on the streets!

It really doesn't get any hotter than this; if an iPad mini really is announced, my feelings are, as usual, the whole country is going to go carzy!

Really? I've noticed the same ambivalence we've seen recently with Apple events. What streets are you on? :p

"It's as if millions of live bloggers suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

Sorry Engadget, Verge, etc. Your value just went down today!

I wouldn't say so. It's nice that I have the choice of streaming the event, but sadly I'm at work. Which means that I may not be able to stream it and I'll have to rely on those sites. :(

Woohoo can't wait. But I think it's ridiculous of apple making the live stream only available to those who own a Mac. I mean this is just another example of how closed source they are.

Being streamed in HD too?!

NO WAY!!!!!! This is just a corporate media event. It is important to Apple and its suppliers and the retailers and the shareholders.

It should not be more important to you than school, which is your life.

Apple products are great, but they can't breathe for you, think for you, get you your first job, play a game of basketball for you, or start a business for you. They make great tools to help out.

Just go to the Apple Store or their online store soon after this media event and you will get all the info you need without having to watch a bunch of corporate execs wow you.

Unless you want to be a corporate exec, I find these events fairly boring and filled with hype, particularly after the map fiasco on iPhone 5 and Siri's limitations on iPhone 4s and AntennaGate on iPhone 4. It all looks great in presentation, but in the real world, the bugs present themselves.

So here's my lecture: Student, be prudent!!!! Go to school, enjoy your day, don't worry about the live stream of a corporate event, play some ball, pet your dog, kiss your mom and dad and have some fun, and don't be a sheep worshipping a company or a product....

And don't forget to brush and floss your teeth and wash behind those ears!!!!!

Now hurry along to school so I can get ready to watch my Apple event without interruptions!!!!

Relax with your post man, the OP said he was going to school, just wished he had the day off. Geez

But I'm not going to install Safari on my PC just to watch an Apple event stream. Its another example of Apple being closed and attempting to force people to do things their way. Sometimes its okay and better, other times there is simply no reason for it. I believe this is the latter.

EDIT: Has to be on Mac OSX Snow Leopard or higher anyways. I don't have an iOS device at work (android phone), so I guess I'm SOL. Just have to make due with Engadget.

Let's draw the venn diagram of people who have 1) No access to ANY of this Apple-made technology and 2) Need to see this event in real-time and can't wait the 2 minutes it'll take the bloggers to re-type the information.

Is there a large crowd in that overlap?

It is clear from the compatibility list this is yet another resource doled out by Apple for only its own recent clientel. If Apple were to make its stream (or store-forward video) available in a format visible to all styles of computers and devices, it would expose non-users to the new products it wants to sell.

Rocketman

Hey, what ever happen to the rumors about a dedicated Apple Tv, could this event possibly be it?

Refresh my memory: did the Back to the Mac event allow for asynchronous streaming of the live stream? Or to put it more practically: will I be able to start watching the event from the beginning when I arrive home after work 15 minutes after the event has started?

The video stream requires Safari 4 or later on a minimum of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, or iOS 4.2 or later for those accessing the stream from a mobile device. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with a minimum of software version 5.0.2.
I'm assuming the stream works on Google Chrome, Firefox and Android too? I can't believe you can only watch it using Apple products... [/nerd rant]

Apple TV Audio Out

I wonder if there will be an update today that will allow the Apple TV to stream audio from movies and television shows to an Airplay speaker

Ugh, I have a class from an hour before the event that lasts 3 hours. I'll have to sneak updates on my phone.

As sad as it is to say, with all the part leaks lately it would be very hard for Apple to surprise people with new hardware that hasn't been pieced together from leaked parts already.

I also doubt the content providers are willing to play ball yet. Remember, a real Apple TV is mostly about the interface and the content, and even though Apple probably has that first one down, the content is still lacking imho

If you had a company would you cater to the competition? Apple is in business for a reason.

What the heck? First time I went to the streaming site, the "Live streaming video requires..." text included "...QuickTime 7 on Windows...". But now it's gone! Did I hallucinate or did anyone else see this??

I have a mac and iPad at home, my wife owns an iPhone...but I'm an auditor and we use windows at work..

Gotcha! Yea I'm in tax and we have Windows XP at work ... at a Big FOUR firm!

That said, it wouldn't be able to run anything recent haha.

Sorry man, at least the live blogs are almost so good that it's almost like a live stream
