Wow great !!!

Apple invented a nice device they invented almost 3 years ago, the iPad !

What a bunch of new revolutionary products we are seeing !

You do realize how silly statements like this sound, right? Yes, we've seen an iPad before. We haven't seen it in this form factor before. Not every product needs to be brand new. Products get changed to suit the market, which is what's happening here. Taking a winning product and bringing it to a new segment of the population.

Wash your mouth sir... :). Its not the new iPad 3, its the iPad mini .... I wanna stay as far away from that one as possible.

Are we talking about the same pic? The pic of the smart cover on this thread? That IS the iapd 3.
what am I missing here?
it even says underneath. look at that bezel.

bingo. its crazy the way the trolls dont get this -- the notion that every decision must be frozen at the exact same point in time for all history is absurd. clearly the trolls have never had to run a company or manage a product or do anything, really.

And it's crazy the way fanboys always argue that everything that Apple does is perfect, that Apple's perspective is always right, and that other competitors are wrong / have bad business practices / produce crap.

Point is: Apple/Steve said that the iPad was the optimum size and anything smaller was un-usable and DOA. Google and Kindle have proven this wrong. And now Apple is following suit with the iPad mini. But fanboys will never see this as "Apple is copying"... and Apple apologists will say "well, companies are allowed to make changes to their business strategies to suit the times".

I actually AGREE that companies should (and must) change their business strategies to suit changing trends. But I'm tired of fanboys always saying that Apple is the best / always so revolutionary / can never be wrong and other companies are crap. Well, in about 30 mins, it'll be proven that Apple & Steve were wrong 2 years ago when claiming that a smaller tablet wouldn't work.

So by that token all these new big a** Android smartphones aren't revolutionary either. I'm mean its just bigger screen size, no? :D

Exactly....

"Designed for small hands" will be Apple's new motto for this one.

You can try holding the Mini with two hands, but it won't leave much space left over.

(Unless you like twiddling your fingers)

The 9to5 mac article attributes this news to "reliable sources" (which we all know from experience aren't reliable).

Dont' get me wrong: I tend to believe this rumor, coming as it is a few hours before the public announcement. But it's still just a rumor.

Their reliable sources are reading the info straight from Apple. They do this every time.

Even when we thought they couldn't possibly be right, they were.

Yes, he said it. He also said they weren't going to make a phone, etc. We know that Steve Jobs said a lot of things that either weren't true, or were only true at the time. But Apple isn't copying anything, unless you count copying their own iPad. They're taking an existing product and making it smaller. They're not even copying the size factor of the Nexus or the Kindle. How does this qualify as copying? I'm honestly curious. Because to me, it looks like they're just deciding it's a good time to go after that segment of the market in hopes of stealing some of their competitors' thunder.

I am speaking from the perspective of INNOVATION (none), LINEUP STREAMLINING (none - just more market clutter) and INITIATIVE (none - it's Apple following Amazon and Google instead of setting the bar higher).

All factors above are the main reason why Apple almost disappeared in the 90s.
The difference is Apple was not at the top in the 80s or 90s. The iPad Mini is an extension of a successful product, not a desperate attempt to be noticed. Sometimes diversification and choice is what the market wants.

A couple points:
1) It is possible that two years ago a smaller tablet wouldn't have worked, but it does now
2) It is possible that the 7.85" vs. 7" really does make the difference between usable and not
3) I find both of these unlikely, and Apple just didn't want to have two different size iPads, but realizes they need to now to keep their marketshare.

Now, I wonder if the iPhone will end up following suit and coming in more than one screen size? I'd guess not, but we'll see...

I think that the simplistic naming conventions of the latest ipads will hurt them down the line

current ipad = the new ipad; should be called ipad 3
current ipad mini = "ipad mini"; should be called ipad 3 mini

whats going to happen when the next gen's of ipads come out? (from a naming convention perspective)
