Nope, it will FLOP.

Can we quote you on this months from now when its under millions of Xmas trees ?

Already have several at my office saying they will be getting 2-3 of them for their kids and themselves if they are under 300.

This info does come from Apple's systems.

The 9to5 mac article attributes this news to "reliable sources" (which we all know from experience aren't reliable).

Dont' get me wrong: I tend to believe this rumor, coming as it is a few hours before the public announcement. But it's still just a rumor.

I wonder how many Apple fanatics today will praise how "revolutionary" and awesome the iPad mini is...and how many of those fanatics were the same ones that blasted Google and Amazon for their smaller-sized tablets.

In case the fanboys forget... I'd like to remind them that they should head over to their local department store and buy some sandpaper :)

Not necessarily.

We don't know that this device actually uses iPad apps. It might actually use iphone/ipod ones. You know, the ones designed for a smaller screen that can be zoomed up to fill a bigger one. Those wouldn't have the same issues as the 'tablet apps' that Steve was talking about. and THAT could be the great idea that Cue said to Steve that he was so receptive too

----------

 What! The name we all expected is true! That's crazy talk!:D

But is it that 'we' all guessed correctly about the name or was there another name and Cook etc just say "to hell with it, the blogs have been calling it the 'ipad mini' for months so just call it the dang ipad mini"

Just like they might have done with the whole iPhone 5 thing

What's that? *cups ear* The sound of the supply chain rattling?

Really, at this point I don't really care that so much is leaking. I still look forward to Apple's song and dance numbers. I want to see Tim Cook in a top hat and tails now.

This is not the first time that SJ said Apple would not do something and then Apple turned around and did it. I don't know if it is purposeful misdirection or a changing of minds, but I would never assume with Apple that something they said would never happen will never happen. I've seen it too many times.

Let's not forget that Steve told Tim to run the company his way and not be all 'what would Steve do'

so for all we know, Steve went to his grave opposing a smaller device and Tim disagreed and basically said "I'm in charge now so dust off those prototypes I want to see a smaller ipad pronto" and we've got it.

A SAD day for Apple if this smaller, irrelevant and me-too iPad is actually released today - let's hope this is NOT the case.

Thanks for the laugh! I instantly had to imagine what would happen, if Apple was run by a short-visioned guy like you.
Hilarious!
Man, they gonna sell MILLIONS!

Nope, it will FLOP.

I hope I'll remember to quote you when Apple releases quarterly results in January.

Without a doubt; Apple could wrap a turd in brushed aluminum with a nice :apple: logo and it would sell. The momentum and hype is the wind in their sails.

People often make that claim, and it is total nonsense. What they actually mean is that _they_ don't have a clue what makes customers want to buy stuff, and Apple does. Even in hindsight, they can't figure it out.

It's neither. Apple will at any point in time decide what is the best thing to do _at that point in time_, and then will make very strong statements that doing anything else would be absolutely wrong. As time changes, the "best thing to do" will change, so Apple will adapt and at the same time make very strong statements that doing anything else would be absolutely wrong.

I think you will find that there were a lot of people at Apple that thought a smaller tablet was a good idea but Steve blocked it because he didn't. Now Steve was good at what he did but he did make mistakes and blocking a smaller tablet was one of them in my opinion.

I'm sure he knew it was a good idea and many people would want this. But what was more important at the time was to sell _one_ device only to make sure it was the market leader. And starting with a large device was right to start with, because the competitors only could produce smaller devices. It is quite likely that starting with two devices would have made Apple's position in that market weaker.

And to be honest, when I saw the first iPad I thought it was too small. A 7 inch iPad I wouldn't have taken serious at all. 7 inch is seen as more of a toy. Now that 10" is well established, Apple can sell millions of toys that are very similar to the real thing. Wouldn't have worked the other way round.

I am speaking from the perspective of INNOVATION (none), LINEUP STREAMLINING (none - just more market clutter) and INITIATIVE (none - it's Apple following Amazon and Google instead of setting the bar higher).
Pretty much... unless it has a killer feature.

A real one, not some **** where Apple has patented the concept of a tablet that fits in one hand and trademarked it as MagicGrip, SuperOneHander, MonoMano or something and exploit the reality distortion field to make customers feel great about paying for the liberation of one of their hands. "Until now, I've been unable to scratch my balls while using an iPad, but now I can do both. It's magical. Thank you Apple."

Steve Jobs: "This size (7-inches for a tablet) isn’t sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion. While one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference, it is meaningless unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of their present size.

Apple has done extensive user testing on touch interfaces over many years and we really understand this stuff...These are among the reasons we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA. Dead On Arrival."

In case you haven't noticed, that's the nature of fanboyism. It goes both ways. Just look at all the fanboys/haters who claimed that the iPhone would fail because of [fill in the blank] and are now loving their Android and WM phones that are based on the same iPhone paradigm.

Do we really need to drag that screen graphic out again?

I guess so, since you apparently missed it the last dozen times. Here you go.

So I don't need to file my fingers down to stylus-sided nubs...they only need to be filed down to #2-pencil-eraser-sized nubs?

Now Steve was good at what he did but he did make mistakes and blocking a smaller tablet was one of them in my opinion. In fact this is probably one of the few threads where the phrase 'Steve would never have allowed this' is actually valid. I have used a couple of the smaller Android tablets and thought the form factor was great but I didn't like the tablet version of Android at all. I didn't buy an iPad because its just too big for what I want and an iPad mini will be better for me. I suspect I am not the only one who thinks this.

None of this stuff is now revolutionary, the revolutionary bit was when these devices are first introduced after all without the iPad the tablet market would still probably be dead in the water as it was before the iPad and the smart phone market would be a niche corporate market as it was before the iPhone. If none of this had happened Samsung would still be making crap poorly designed feature phones no one wants, Nokia would still be the mobile world leader, Android would be a Blackberry knock off, Blackberry would probably still be the world leader in the corporate market and over all the technology market would be very different than it is today.

Not from Apple's POV. They will position this as 'yeah we are the last to do it but we did it the best. The way THEY should have done it'

and it will sell. By the millions. Even at a way higher price because Apple is seen by many as a 'luxury brand'

These events are no fun! Everything leaks and we know all the details weeks in advance now. Only solution is to not log onto the Internet.

hmm or maybe just not read rumor/leak sites daily? a thought.

I completely agree that it goes both ways. The iPhone was revolutionary and we have Apple to thank for the way they changed how we interact with our phones.

Personally, I never thought the iPhone would fail (though I seriously thought the original iPhone's pricing model would never work...and that proved to be true). The iPad mini is a good move because I think there IS a market for this (as already proven by the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7). I just wanted to point out that always believing Jobs' words were canon isn't always a good idea...and there's quite a bit of hypocrisy in an Apple fanboy's worship of all things Apple.

What if you're a woman? ;) Thanks for the laughs.

If that photo is an actual ad from Apple, the icons underneath look quite blurry... no retina, no buy. And really, if there's no Retina screen on this device, Apple shouldn't even bring it to market. Will they sell units without a Retina screen? Of course. Will they diminish the quality of their product and user experience therefore decreasing their perceived worth? I would think so.

It's an iPad2/3 in the graphic, has the old dock connector.

...its a lower-end product. its ok to have a lower-end product (like an imac or a mac mini). if you want the high-end features, its ok to have a high-end product (like a mac pro). i dont think imacs or mac minis diminish the mac's perceived worth, despite crummier features.

It will be 8, and it will be 4:3, so it will be much bigger than the Fire or Nexus

And no, i'm not interested, not gonna buy one, but let's get it straight
