Jeopardize? I think you may be shocked to learn that iPod and iPad sales both give cash to Apple. So, they don't really care which one you buy, unless there is a massive cost or profit difference, which there doesn't appear to be.

Yes, jeopardize sales. It won't happen anyway, and certainly not at a price below $400 if it has retina and A5 or A6 and 4G.

The vast majority of the target audience isn't caught up in specs. They are attracted to the idea of a smaller device at a somewhat reasonable price. Retina displays and A6 chips mean a lot less to to mom or dad buying holiday gifts than price.

I see a product that will dissapont the hardcore on technical specs (8 gig, no retina at $249, 16 gig @$299, 16 gig 3G@ $379), but be extremely competitive in the 7 inch market where people will pay a slight premium to buy Apple products.

Wrong, why? Because I don't know about America but here in the UK Apple constantly have national television advertisement campaigns that are constantly selling their devices based on their specifications and features which include Siri AND Retina displays. They set up the premiss with the public that they have these wonderful technical specifications on their devices.

I realize you're getting plenty flamed for this comment, but just to drive the point home:

I purchased an iPad when it first came out. It was a novel toy that I never really implemented into my daily life and soon faded away to be used only for the occasional Kindle book. There were a few too many issues I didn't like about it, but that's for another post...

One day, sometime later after the iPad 2 came out, I happened to go kill time in a Best Buy and found myself looking the newest iPad over. I was impressed with the slimmer and lighter model. I wandered through the rest of the tablet aisle afterwards and immediately realized that the smaller, lighter tablets were way more to my liking and felt Apple missed the ball not going with a 7"...

You've read my mind!

The difference is that I've never owned an iPad because I personally think its too "bulky" and it's too "heavy" to hold while you watch films or surf the web.

For me and maaaaaany others the 7" would fit perfectly our needs.

I'll buy one for me and one for my partner.

How many iPad Minis have been sold already in this forum without even being released?

It's going to be a hit!

Well, that is the price I quoted. But your presumption that Apple won't make one of these because some people will buy it instead of another Apple product is incorrect. That is not jeopardizing Apple sales, it is diversifying them.
Apple = Apple.

a wifi only model could be disappointing I hope it includes 3G/4G
I second that, if it doesn't I'll just keep borrowing my wife's Kindle, which I find is a PIA to use if your traveling as you have to keep looking for a wi-fi hot spot.

Apple = Apple.

They won't make it, we had no rumours and the ones that have turned up are so flaky that they are copying a Cadbury's Flake chocolate bar!
Look at the iPhone 5, that thing has been leaked for months so much so that many believed the constant rumours to be fake. And now we have next to none for an iPad Mini and I am going to state they won't launch one.

Apple are not able to price and spec an iPad mini to sell, it has priced the iPod Touch too high for that. Seriously, how many people wanting an iPod Touch would buy one over an iPad Mini? Hardly any.

And so Apple will make it too expensive and they know that. All Apple are going to do is take the iPad upmarket I think.

"I want an iPad mini"
-Said no one ever

EDIT: It appears I may be wrong. Quite surprised that people actually want this thing.

I want one. I've always wanted to buy an iPad, but can never find myself actually purchasing the device. Nowadays, however, I could go for a smaller-sized iPad.
