"It is exactly like the iPad in every way. Except 1/8 it's size..." ~snip~

Your math is incorrect.

Oh jesus christ, I have to explain this to you??? It was in quotes, sir. As in, I was quoting...a movie. Austin Powers, to be precise.

Seriously, I love how people feel the need to correct what was obviously a joke.

Wow. Just wow.

It's because they're Vulcans.

That last is pretty funny, but nah, it's because it's the 21st century now, so quoting anything older than about the last five tweets often gets met with a blank stare. Soon enough, having the attention span of a gnat will be one of the benchmarks of a promising intellect, a future educator. We are doomed. The insects are going to win this one.

I want that mini iPad, by the way. AND my original one. The little one will travel well and provide more real estate when I want something more than a fast snap through the news on an iPhone. I can see it having a couple movies on it, some music, a few books, but mostly to browse with more ease than on the phone. The big iPad stays home and holds huge piles of movies, books, magazines. Really I can hardly wait. (Actually I didn't wait, I got a Nook tablet, but that may end up as a spare e-reader when the mini iPad materializes, no offense to Barnes & Noble for making a very attractive and conveniently sized tablet).

I wonder if they have a better control over leaked parts in Brazil?

I wonder if Apple will improve _Quality Control_ ?

Having just been burned on not one, but two mediocre iPhone 5's, I'm rethinking my plan.

Originally the plan was to pre-order two.

Now I'm inclined to take a much wiser wait & see approach. Walmart & SAMs Club are experienced in large scale mass sales. Conversely Apple seems to be struggling to deliver the quality they were once famous for.

It's got to be due to the break neck pace & grueling hours they're forcing on Foxconn workers

I think people that say there isn't really a market for an iPad Mini are just full of it. In fact I'd venture to say many are just waiting for Apple to roll one out vs getting an Nexus or Samsung 7" tablet.

Nonetheless with that said I think many are going to be disappointed in either the price range and/or the specs of the device. However, like most things Apple they will sell anyway.

I have a Nexus 7 right now and I've enjoyed it. I do have an iPad too, so I've been able to do a lot of comparisons in terms of Android 4.1 and iOS6. I can honestly say I prefer iOS6, but the Nexus 7 is a great little device and I've used the fire out it (no pun intended). LOL

My biggest concern about an iPad Mini is that in order for Apple to reach a low end price point they are going to spec it very low including a non retina display. Given the higher quality display on the Nexus and newer tablets that Samsung and Amazon has put out. It's going to be a hard choice for folks to decide, but I think those that are looking for better specs will go elsewhere and those tied to the Apple ecosystem will still get the iPad Mini regardless of the low end specs.

Non-Retina might be one of those things that seems like a hindrance on paper... but might not be a problem in practicality.

I used a friend's iPad 2 all last weekend... and it was fine.

Sure... it's not a beautiful as the Retina iPad... but it's cheaper. And you still get all the benefits of an iPad.

Performance will be great even if it's specced low. The original iPad from 2010 is still pretty smooth... but using a processor and GPU from today will be even better (even if it's not the same exact hardware as the new iPad)

If Apple wanted everyone to buy the new iPad... they wouldn't have kept the old iPad 2 around for $100 less.

And because of that... I can see Apple releasing an even cheaper, smaller iPad to fill out the iPad product line.

But, as usual, you don't have to buy the entry-level model... you can always go up.

If they release an iPad mini, I will almost definitely pick one up if the price is right.

well that right there is the issue. these things will probably cost $200 just to manufacture, unless Apple can pull off some kind of a magic trick with their suppliers. we all know that apple likes high profit margins... so i'm expecting $400+

if the price is right, maybe $300, i will pick up a bunch of these to give as holiday presents to my nephews instead of getting them those new oversized nintendo gameboys. but i'm not getting my hopes up.

And the BigPad quakes in fear as its moment of cannibalization rapidly approaches...

Aimed at a different market, perhaps.

My wife wants one, too. Family of 4. So 33% plus 25% is 58%. 58% of all people want one!

The OP said three kids; you say your wife wants one. Including yourself, that would be a family of 5. One of the kids plus your wife makes 2 out of 5, that would be 40%, according to most folks. If we didn't get your 'joke', just ignore us, 73% of the time. :)

The world has gone mobile and your beloved Apple is a consumer products company, not a computer company.

That would be a sad day!

As long as they don't put one of those stupid strap button things on like the ipod touch I'll be happy. Also it'd be nice if it's cheap :p

Well, I was a firm believer that Apple would not use an A5 in the iPhone 5, many argued or stated on here it would be but I was adamant and look what happened! They surprised everyone by designing their own chip which just as, it not more powerful then any other next gen chip.
So I would not state the specs will be poor, after all they have made a name with the 'retina' tag and to release a non retina iPad would be daft especially considering the res of the iPad 3's screen being so high.
The mythical iPad mini will have a Retina screen with I would guess an A6 or an A5X but perhaps with a tri core GPU of lower spec. No rear camera and no cellular data option.
I would also argue that only Apple fans that religiously follow the tech blogs are gong to be waiting for an iPad Mini rather then any other device that is launched or announced.

LOL

Great that you have tried the dark side! I think they are both as capable but for me one iOS device (iPhone 5) is enough.

And we hit the sticking point, pricing and market placement. Apple is not going to launch an iPad with lower specs and pricing then the new iPod Touch. People would think it's gone mad! And the new Touch pretty much guaranteed any new iPad Mini will NOT be cheap.
This is the glaring fact many are ignoring, the new Touch, what spec is it? what price is it? And yet people STILL refuse to accept the fact any iPad Mini will NOT be lower priced or speced, Apple is not going to spend all that time and money on the new Touch development only to ruin it's sales with a better product for less.

So therefore Apple has to price a Mini iPad from between $299 and $499, and then it has to persuade people they really need a 7.85" sized tablet even though it's only a bit smaller then the normal iPad and bigger then all the other 7" devices.

This is why I think Apple are going to go the opposite direction and go upmarket with the iPad. I think they will copy the ModBook and make a touchscreen full mac tablet range to take on the Windows 8 Pro tablets. I really do think Apple are going to struggle to place an iPad Mini at the right price and right spec for it to sell well enough.

Hmmm - I don't recall Austin Powers talking about an iPad - which movie? And BTW, it's Jesus Christ - not jesus christ.

My reference was in regards to the tablet being the iPad, only a smaller form factor. Mini me? Not ringing a bell? Never mind, because you lost points with the religion thing.

And BTW, to me, it's just jesus christ, no caps. Or the dead jewish carpenter. Or the Mithra copycat.

Thanks for playing.

I'd be surprised if it was $400 since iPad 2 is the same price. I'd imagine it would be $300 base, but it all depends on what the specs are. I'd pay $400 for an iPad mini if it had LTE.

Can't Wait to Get Mine

I have been waiting for a smaller iPad since day 1. The full-size version is just too big for use as a tool for my lesson/message outlines.

For those who are proclaiming "FAIL" on this thing, I think you will be shocked at how a $199.00 (ish) pricepoint and a smaller form-factor will appeal to people who want a device that is more usable in a one-handed context.

This thing will be a BIG hit at Christmas.

I think you will be shocked to realise Apple is a business and isn't going to jeopardise sales of it's entire iPod range by launching a $200 iPad let alone damage sales of the current iPad.

They could always discontinue the iPad 2 and have the Mini take its place.

Not to mention, if it does show at 1024x768 on a 7.85" display, it'll get a decent little PPI bump from the iPad1/2 (~164 vs. ~132). :)

I don't but for my girlfriend it'd be perfect :)

Well done sir, assuming that was by design, if not, well done anyway :D

FWIW, I was with you as soon as you posted. :D

(I almost posted something about Freakin' Laser Microphones in another thread ...)

The vast majority of the target audience isn't caught up in specs. They are attracted to the idea of a smaller device at a somewhat reasonable price. Retina displays and A6 chips mean a lot less to to mom or dad buying holiday gifts than price.

I see a product that will dissapont the hardcore on technical specs (8 gig, no retina at $249, 16 gig @$299, 16 gig 3G@ $379), but be extremely competitive in the 7 inch market where people will pay a slight premium to buy Apple products.

We should not presume the next ipad mini will retain the features of an ipad 2 just shrunk down. I agree with others, Brazilians are keeping tighter secrecy.

I expect this to have the new A6 processor, retain the quad core GPU architecture, and apply the retina display in this smaller form factor. Everyone tries to base the price point on the specs of an ipad2 and that is a mistake.

Jeopardize? I think you may be shocked to learn that iPod and iPad sales both give cash to Apple. So, they don't really care which one you buy, unless there is a massive cost or profit difference, which there doesn't appear to be.

And BTW, to me, it's just jesus christ, no caps.
All names are capitalized. So, with your slant it would be: Jesus christ.
